This is a must do while in Bar Harbor. Walk across the bar at low tide and head to the top of Bar Island for spectacular views.

At low tide, there is a land bridge between the mainland and Bar Island. It's a great little adventure that is suitable for kids from 8-80. I recommend walking across the land bridge, although some do drive their cars across the spit. But be careful. The tide waits for no man, no woman, or no Chevy Impala rental car. You have a 1.5 hour window before low tide and a 1.5 window after low tide, so be aware of your surroundings. The hike to the top has some roots and rocks so most members of the general population will be fine. Parents with babies in back packs and senior citizens all made the trek to the top. The view is worth the hike. To look back at Bar Harbor is a treat. You get an idea of what a special place this is such that the harbor is deep enough for the largest cruise ship. You also get an appreciation for what Rockfeller did for America by paying for large parcels of Acadia. In his absence, the mountains would be covered with casinos, hotels, and other eye sores. Instead, this place is still a gem.

We went over the land bridge to the island one morning. It's a great trail if you have an hour or so to spare and the tide is low. We hiked up and from the top of Bar Island, where the trail leads, and there are very nice panoramic views of Bar Harbor. Bar Island is a great morning activity if you have time while at Acadia.

Easy to follow trail (after crossing sand bar) leads to great view back to Bar Harbor. Good first day/evening activity.
