The walk across the sand bar makes this extra special and once on the Island there are some great views of Bar Harbor and the other islands. The trails aren't well marked, but the island isn't large so it's difficult to get lost.

“Must see during low tide”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

A must see to understand and appreciate why they call it Bar Harbor. Nice views and a easy trail. Takes 30-45 minutes and is only several blocks from town.

“A short fun hike”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

When you're in Bar Harbor, park your car on West Street near Bridge Street and then walk down Bridge Street to the sand bar during low tide. It's fun, free, not at all strenuous, and the perfect place for families with young children. A lot of people just stay on the bar itself while others walk over to Bar Island and hike up to the top of the trail (15 minutes at most). We didn't see the view from the top, as the fog hadn't lifted yet, so I can't comment on that. Hear it's great though.

“Maureen from Long Island”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

After a delicious breakfast of blueberry pancakes, I took the walking trail along Shore Path. The view of the kayaks and the big houses were enjoyable. It was low tide and the shoreline revealed interesting artifacts. It was pleasant exercise.

“Pleasant hike with a good view”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Bar Island is right in Bar Harbor and you can do the whole thing in under an hour. First you cross a bar that is only out of water around low tide. If you try to get back more than 2 hours after the tide, you'll swim. Many families just stay on the bar. Cross to the island and you climb a small hill. At the top there is a nice view over the harbor to the town.
