We had one rainy day on our trip so we brought our kids here and we were glad we did! It was very well done and extremely informative! They only let so many people in which is nice and it keeps things moving.

Pay extra for the marsh walk....it was pleasant and educational!

Visit on a rainy day was both---fun and a learning experience. The owner/story teller was an absolute delight. This is the only lobster hatchery in the US. Literally a Mom and Pop operation with some excellent help from ocean researchers. You will not be disappointed.

VERY interesting! We got to see a mother lobster with about 10,000 eggs attached to her just ready to hatch. Also saw new
lobster hatchlings and there were little "condos" for each baby lobster to stay in until release. The girl who gave the talk was
knowledgeable and had great insight into what people who
don't know anything about lobstering would be interested in hearing about. We really enjoyed it.

My husband and I went here on our trip to Bar Harbor. I think this place should be on your list of things to do for anyone who cares about wildlife. The staff was very knowledgeable and you are supporting a good cause. The money you spend here goes to help raise lobsters and put them back in the bay. You will learn a lot in the time you are there. Nice place for kids also.

It was pouring down rain on our first vacation day at Acadia. What to do with four restless kids (ages 10, 12, 12, and 14)? We were glad we stumbled upon the Oceanarium. Enthusiastic interns told us about the conservation efforts of the nation's only lobster hatchery, incorporating video clips, microscope slides (magnified to a television screen), and live animals into the presentation. In another part of the tour, a man looking every bit the salty Maine fisherman told us stories about lobster traps and boats, the dangers of the sea, and the bravery of the men who spend their lives working on the water. He was a gifted storyteller, and my children sat enthralled. The best part of the experience was the touch tank. The owners limit the number of people who can go in at once to be sure everyone has a chance to participate, which we really appreciated. Our teacher was an extremely knowledgeable, kind woman who included all the children in her lesson. They had opportunities to hold a sea cucumber, an urchin, sea stars, and horseshoe crabs; anyone who wanted a turn got one, and it was so much fun to see the delighted faces of the children crowded around the tank, ranging from early elementary ages up through teens, as they caressed and cooed over the animals. It cost around $70 for the six of us, and as entrance fees are used to support the hatchery's conservation efforts, we felt it was vacation money well spent.
