“The Best of Bar Harbor”

The Atlantean Inn was wonderful. Gary & Heidi are great hosts and have made every effort to assure a 5 star stay for their guests. The breakfasts were excellent and very filling. The Inn was attractive, clean, inviting common rooms, and a great location. Easy walk into town but away from all the noise and congestion of the town. We loved it and hope to return again!

Forget about the Cafe This Way restaurant being Bar Harbor's best kept secret - the Atlantean Inn is the true best kept secret! Located on a quiet residential side street, you're a 30 second walk from all the hustle and bustle of restaurants and shops of the main avenue but without the noise and congestion.

Gary and Heidi are exemplary hosts and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3 nights stay. We booked the Chatswold room and it was an extremely clean, large and handsomely decorated room. This was a rare instance where the inn and the rooms were NICER than what the website depicted.

The breakfasts were cooked by Gary and although they are vegetarian, you wouldn't notice it. The portions were huge too - enought to fuel you for a hike in nearby Acadia Nat'l Park.

The inn's common rooms are lovely and I spent a few hours in the afternoon just lounging around. There is also an excellent butler's pantry for guests' use which is well stocked with bottled water, hot beverages, crackers and nibblies and also freshly baked cookies every night. Plus there were brochures and restaurant info as well.

My husband would rather we kept this hidden gem to ourselves but it wouldn't be fair to Gary and Heidi. The added bonus is that they are only one of 4 B&Bs that stay open year round, including the holidays! We can't wait to go back!

  • Liked — Inn location and the Chatswold room were both excellent
  • Disliked — Having to leave!!

The Aug 3oth, "A Class Act" review below says it perfectly (though we did enjoy all breakfasts - wish I had the recipes). We too just returned from a 4-nite stay over the Labor Day weekend, and also stayed in the Mizzentop Suite. There is so much to explore in the Bar Harbor area, Acadia National Park is a must see, and it's wonderful to feel as though you're returning "home" after a full day out-of-doors.

Heidi and Gary are wonderful hosts; the breakfasts are dee-lish; the open pantry is a nice treat; and I really can't think of anything they've missed or could improve upon. There are nice linens; down comforters; lots of pillows; bathrobes; very, very clean rooms.... Our 13-yr old son is all set to plan another long weekend here.

It's a get-away we'll surely remember and would highly recommend to those who enjoy the B & B travel style.

  • Liked — The suite and common room accomodations - plenty of room
  • Disliked — Nothing - you'll love it all

My friend and I stayed at the Atlantean for a girls weekend away in August and it was wonderful. The inn is beautifully maintained. We had a room with double beds (very comfortable) and a GREAT shower! We liked being able to walk around town and it is close to the shore walk as well. It was on a quiet side street and the innkeepers were very knowledgeable. Gary will warn you of the significant number of tourists in certain places in the park (Acadia), but that goes with the territory. It's a very popular place in the summer. Being from Maine, we are well accustomed to it! And it was bearable :) Breakfast was good, although not quite to our particular liking. Very good restaurants nearby: Havana, Cafe This Way. And you have to stop at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound for lobster (unless you don't like lobster)!! Just not on Sunday, when they are closed. Bar Harbor & Acadia (specifically Southwest Harbor and Seal Harbor) are great places to hang out and hike in the summer and early fall.

We spent four nights here and thought this was a first-rate, professional operation. The house and grounds provided the perfect backdrop for our first Maine vacation. We travel a lot and were looking for an inn-type property rather than a mom-and-pop set-up and the Atlantean really came through.

We were in the Mizzentop suite, which was wonderful. It consisted of a bedroom, lounge/tv room, second bedroom with a day bed and a fabulous bathroom. To start, the bathroom was fit for a king—with a raised platform Jacuzzi tub and big windows it was really a fabulous place to soak after a hike in Acadia. The second bedroom was a great place for an afternoon read as the daybed was directly below a huge skylight. We really liked having the tv lounge as it gave you room to spread out and somewhere else to sit besides the bed. There was ample room for luggage. The room, as well as the entire inn, was immaculately clean—no dusty knickknacks here, no thrift store bric a brac. At one point I dropped an earring on the floor and had to get it from under the bed—you could have eaten breakfast on that floor. The room looks exactly like the photos on the website.

The public areas of the inn consisted of the foyer, parlor, breakfast room, butler’s pantry and garden and porch. All were elegantly decorated. In the pantry hosts Gary and Heidi provide snacks of all types, bottled water and a fridge for guests. There are thick books of local information compiled for guests and Gary presided over the breakfast room every morning answering questions and providing suggestions for the day’s activities. Both Gary and Heidi were unfailingly helpful and professional.

Breakfasts consisted of a fruit dish and a hot entrée. Most were very good—the pineapple French toast in particular. We did have one clunker though (sorry Gary—ditch the Acadian pie). The white chocolate chip oatmeal cookies they put out in the afternoon are to die for. I really had to discipline myself.

The location was convenient—nearly everything in Bar Harbor is walkable.

When we travel we usually prefer to try a new place rather than return to a spot we’ve already visited but Bar Harbor was so great, and so was the Atlantean, that we would really have to think twice before staying somewhere else.

My husband and I stayed in the Edgemere suite a couple of weeks ago and loved it! The inn is a large century tudor style 'cottage' located in the heart of Bar Harbor. We did not have to use our car at all since the inn is within walking distance to downtown, the town pier, and shuttles to acadia park. Our room was beautiful! It was a very spacious newly renovated room with lovely antique furniture and a fireplace. The bathroom was awesome with double french doors, heated marble floors, jacuzzi tub, and walk-in glass shower. Breakfast was good, although the first morning we had a vegetarian strata made with soy sausage that neither of us cared for. The pineapple french toast the next day was amazing! The innkeepers are really friendly and knowledgable about the area. We only stayed 2 nights and were wishing that we had more time here. There is so much to do! We will definitely be back!

We just returned home from our trip to Maine. The Atlantean Inn was by far the highlight of our trip. It truly felt like our home away from home. The Inn’s location makes it a perfect retreat – it is situated on a quiet neighborhood street within walking distance to downtown Bar Harbor. My husband and I enjoyed relaxing on the swing overlooking the tranquil gardens as well as sipping an afternoon cup of coffee on the front porch. The accommodations at the Atlantean were fantastic. The bed was comfortable, the breakfasts were scrumptious, and the butler’s pantry was extremely convenient. The innkeepers, Heidi and Gary, kept the refrigerator in the butler’s pantry well stocked with Poland Spring water. We also enjoyed an afternoon cookie, or two homemade by Heidi. Heidi and Gary were a wealth of knowledge. Whether it involved suggestions on where to eat dinner, the best trails to hike in Acadia, or telling us the history of the island, Heidi and Gary couldn’t have been more gracious hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Atlanean Inn. We would highly recommend it to anyone looking to vacation in Bar Harbor. I can’t wait to return next year!
