“Very convenient and runs on time”

Acadia National Park Island Explorer Bus

The free bus service is so well organized and convenient. You can access all the major sites at Acadia Nat Park. But you must plan your route and keep in mind the bus schedules or you could end up on a 2 hr bus route. You will have to wait up to 30 mins. We did opt to use our car on the Loop Road instead of the bus. This gives you more freedom and time to stop and enjoy the spots that are more appealing to you.

With the growing popularity of our beloved Acadia National Park, it is only a matter of time before access by auto will be restricted. This is a forecast grounded in empirical data; our own local version of climate change.

Seriously, as more people travel to MDI, the levels of pollution will rise, as will the increase in accidents and parking congestion. And one need only watch the behavior of out-of-town errant drivers** - passing cars, racing to reach red lights, and fighting over parking spots as if their life depended on it... This has already forced policy changes in Yellowstone and Grand Canyon National Parks.

So sit back and enjoy the FREE shuttle. After all, why are most of you here ? There are no meetings atop Cadillac Mountain; no assembly lines in Jordan Pond. The deer are not waiting for their performance reviews.

Relax and take in the beauty of Acadia.

Most of you are driving yourselves to death. Think about it.

** didn't some idiot run their car "off" Cadillac Mt. in August, 2014? Hard to beat that one.

Clean busses, helpful drivers, superior transportation around the island. They are usually right on schedule.

The big downside to the buses is that they aren't as frequent as you would hope and the loop takes probably an hour and fourth-five minutes to go all the way around and return to Bar Harbor (though it is the nicest view for a bus trip you may ever have!). Personally I would recommend taking your car out early(ish), finding a decent parking spot and using your legs to explore around that area for the day until you're ready to head back to town. Otherwise I feel like you would lose a fair bit of time. UNLESS you're staying outside Bar Harbor (I.e. at the campgrounds or larger hotels) and want to go into town for dinner, in which case the buses are a GREAT option.

The Explorer Buses make Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park such a convenient destination. I love that I can leave my car at the hotel, hop on a bus, and go anywhere. Bus drivers are very helpful & pleasant - buses run on a convenient schedule.
