Excellent location - walking distance of downtown shops, short drive to entrance of Acadia National Park.
Accommodation - upscale, comfortable, extra amenities provided
Breakfast - very tasty and well prepared.
Hosts - charming
Extra special - a driving DVD of Acadia National Park was available for guests of the B&B. It was superb.

Where to begin? We chose Bar Harbor as our honeymoon to escape the Southern summer and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay--the hosts, the house, the food--everything was "purrfect" (gotta love their cats!) This will be a long review, so read it all or scan for what you're interested in!

What room did we stay in? Chatsworth
How long did we stay? 5 nights (August 6-August 10)

We arrived to Bar Harbor on a rainy evening, misguided by our GPS who thought Robert Ave was one way in the opposite direction. So needless to say we arrived a little stressed out after battling traffic and rain and the hectic summer traffic. After parking in the driveway I was a little concerned it would be inconvenient to drive since parking is *very* hard to come by and it requires Jane & Steve to jockey cars around for people. Nevertheless, Jane greeted us at the door and helped us take our luggage up to the Chatsworth room on the second floor.

The Room
---------------
Our room was a breath of fresh air (literally), with a bathroom almost as large as the bedroom, and between the bedroom and bathroom, it spanned the width of the house! A private patio right off our room let us sit in the trees and enjoy the outdoors. The bed was very comfy with excellent linens. The bathroom had a shower/tub combo with great water pressure. There was no TV in the room which we were aware of, and as scared as we were of that, we never got the urge to watch TV outside of the first night. There was no iron/ironing board in the room, but Jane will gladly bring you one if you're neat freaks like we can be. At night you can leave the windows open to near silence, or you can cut on the AC or heat if your climate needs are more precise. The room was made up every day and the binder in the room gave us a lot of good ideas for recreation and dining. All-in-all we felt like the Chatsworth room was an absolute steal for the price.

The House
---------------
The house is located only a few blocks from main street in Bar Harbor, which means you don't have to drive *anywhere* if you don't want to. And we did just that--arrived Monday evening and didn't touch our car until we left on Saturday. They even have a shuttle service that runs all over Mt. Desert Island during the tourist season. The house sits on a side street also, which means extra peace and quiet--literally silence at night from the windows! The cats (XB, Asticou, Warwick) are such personalities all their own, but you don't feel like they're more important than the guests to Jane & Steve. You can enjoy them as much or as little as you choose (we chose to play with them daily and they indulged us). The rest of the house is gorgeous and they have menus from almost all the local restaurants along with a ton of info and maps about Acadia National Park. Between the wealth of knowledge of Jane & Steve, the guest reviews in the guest books, and the menus downstairs, you'll never have to eat at the same place twice (although you might want to!)

The Hosts
--------------
Jane and Steve are quite a unique set of hosts in our experience. They really feel like close friends or relatives more than hosts--you can ask them anything and they will bend over backwards for you to meet your needs (more in the food section). Steve is very knowledgeable about the park and very funny. The only negative review in the lot made him seem pushy--FAR from it! Jane is always cheerful and hands down the best breakfast cook we've come across. Her background in catering means breakfast is coming right when you sit down--and oh, the food! She also has plenty of great recommendations on where to eat.

The Food
-------------
Like we said above, the food was amazing. Each morning there was fresh fruit for each patron, plates of different fresh pastries, and fresh juices. After you've stuffed yourself on that, the *real* breakfast comes and you wished you saved more room. We cleaned our plate every day, and we consider ourselves picky eaters. There is always fresh coffee available and fallbacks like cereal if you choose. The thing we found to be amazing is Jane's ability to cater to our needs. One of us is lactose intolerant, and the typical response is to fix something simpler without milk. Jane managed to make the same dish without milk for us each day--we never missed out on the delicious recipes she had. Top it all off with fresh baked goods in the late afternoon, too. We never saw the same thing twice in the 5 days we were there. And as a side note, Jane can make boxed lunches to order. We did it once and would highly recommend it to anyone staying there--take one with you and enjoy it on the island, they are great!

Conclusion? Honestly, Bar Harbor was incredible in the summer, but it wouldn't have been nearly as relaxing if we weren't staying at Aysgarth. We would recommend them for anyone looking for the best B&B in Bar Harbor!

The Aysgarth is located on Roberts street a short walk from downtown, but in a quiet area. The hosts were very friendly and that attitude spilled over to the guests who seemed to enjoy the inn a great deal. Breakfast was high class and our room was spacious with a porch. I don't think you can go wrong at the Aysgarth.

Great location and very welcoming hosts. Popular b & b, Jane's food is delicious and her packed lunches for a day in the Acadia National Park are perfect! Unbeatable as a base for a few days in Bar Harbor.

If you are looking for an unbeatable experience at a B&B - look no more! I have never experienced such hospitality anywhere - it felt just like I was at home or a family members' home. Jane was always accessible when needed and both Steve and Jane were willing to go out of their way to provide the finest accomodations, advice, and even just general knowledge about the island.

Jane's homemade breakfasts were second to none! Homemade, cakes, pastries, fresh fruit....and that's just for starters! Within 2 days stay, we dined on a fabulous homemade french toast with Maine blueberries after an enticing 'appetizer' of fresh kiwis and strawberries, a delicious pear cake with cinnamon, that I still dream of. The following day we started with a fresh assortment of melons, with a delicious macadamia nut cake and to top that off was an unbelievable egg souffle with tomato, basil and pancetta! I have never been spoiled so much in my entire life and those will be some breakfasts to remember!!!

We stayed at the Skipton room, which had a medieval flare to it, even equipped with a period sword - nice touch! The location of the inn was in perfect walking distance to a host of things that bar harbor has to offer - including some fine places to dine, nice shopping, and scenic paths along the water.

If you are going to Bar Harbor - don't pass up staying at Aysgarth!

My husband and I stayed three nights at Aysgarth Station and were delighted by the inn and its keepers, Jane and Steve! Their excellent advice about hikes, bike trails, restaurants, lobster pounds, light houses, etc. was always absolutely on point. Jane's breakfasts are truly fantastic (including caramelized apple waffles, Maine blueberry blintzes) and her afternoon tea treats are to die for (especially the rhubarb bars). We sat out on their charming porch with our books and a bottle of wine each evening after big days of hiking, lobster roll eating, microbrewery samplings, boating, biking and touring quaint towns. Jane graciously and promptly found us a room at a neighboring inn when I discovered that I had made an error in booking. I can't imagine going to Bar Harbor and not staying at Aysgarth Station. Thank you Jane and Steve for a fantastic time!
