“Super Friendly Staff, Great Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2013

Although my wife's first impression of the public area was uncertain, given the very large, bright floral print wallpaper, with matching material in the main couch, by the time we left after three days at the Inn, we didn't even notice it. Dan and his staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful with everything from wonderful breakfasts, to advice on how much time to allow for various activities, and dead on recommendations for several things to do that were not on our original agenda. His insights in particular into the myriad activities available throughout the Mount Desert Island were invaluable. The shore walk was wonderful, and just being so convenient to all of downtown Bar Harbor made the stay great, and very walkable for almost everything within the town. Blueberry pancakes were an amazing way to start the day.

Room Tip: Honeymoon Suite that we rented was great in that it had its own private entrance from outdoors, maki...

The most memorable inns are those that ultimately feel like a home away from home. This is one of them. Innkeeper and owner Dan Daigle and his staff at the Castlemaine have created that distinctive style of hospitable ambiance. Upon our arrival, road-weary from a seven hour trip, a very nice lady named Bobbi not only welcomed us into a charming, spacious, well appointed room (# 9 ) but called a restaurant just a short walk away and had a table reserved for us with a great view of the harbor. Dan and the staff had thoroughly excellent recommendations, and gave info concerning day trips, local restaurants, Acadia National Park trails and highlights, scenic nature tours, etc, Breakfast was not only consistently delicious but ample and the service provided was top-notch. In the common areas, there's plenty of room to relax, be it in the parlors or on the front porch. Our ground floor room had all the amenities for comfort and also a small deck outside to relax if desired. Room has a huge bath, also with jetted tub. The inn is on Holland Street - a pleasant and quiet location within walking distance of "downtown" and the harbor attractions. The Castlemaine is an exceptional inn ! A great stay and a very good way to experience the flavor and beauty of Bar Harbor. Should we ever vacation in this area of Maine again, we're sure to check into this wonderful B & B.

Lovely old Victorian Inn! We were in a first floor room that had no noise whatsoever and was roomy and comfortable--the perfect place to crash after every hiking day. Lovely staff too. We lost one of our two room keys somewhere (on a boat? on a mountain?) and the innkeeper could not possibly have been nicer or more gracious (he refused to let us even pay for a new key). This place just has a really nice vibe all around. Oh, and they should make their delicious blueberry pancakes a daily offering.

Room Tip: Tip to Bar Harbor travelers looking for a good night's sleep: the inns on the side streets are t...

Very clean, comfortable accomadation. Breakfast was delicious as was the coffee. Staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and were very informative about area attractions. Located a short walk from the downtown area. I would definitely return.

This is a beautiful bed and breakfast. The sitting room is floral with assorted sofa. Our room was absolutely comfortable and so romantic ! (Well, we had the "romantic room"). There is a outside deck next to this spacious room for those who would like to smoke - but it's better not to tell Ben who is in charge ! The only thing missing is a nice breakfast room (just a few modern chairs and tables -no charm at all for this one). Breakfast was offered every morning with two choices. Lots of sweets and - to my point of view, certainly not the best I have ever had in a B&B. Special mention for the staff - nice and friendly. All in all a good experience and a bit pricey, But we were In Bar Harbour ! Francoise H.

Room Tip: "Romantic room" for romantic people or just for the beauty of it.

My husband and I spent our 26th wedding anniversary at the Castlemaine Inn. If you are trying to find the right spot at the right price with the friendliest owner and staff, please do yourselves a favor and book at this Inn. We stayed in the Romantic room which features a king sized bed, sofa and fireplace (only needed for fall). The room opens onto a wonderful little deck for sipping coffee in the morning. I have to rave a bit about the coffee, since we are Starbucks fans and there is no such thing in Bar Harbor. Castlemaine has GOOD morning coffee and very creative home made breakfasts which you can smell wafting to the bedroom as it is being cooked each morning. The location is just a couple of blocks from the main downtown shopping area.

Room Tip: Highly recommend the Romantic Room

We selected the Castlemaine Inn based on the reviews in Tripadvisor along with location and cost. Needless to say, we were not disappointed! We also stayed in the secret room - the name alone revealing the quaintness and charm of the inn. Getting in and out of bed on the one side was a bit awkward due to the slope of the roof and height of the ceiling, but not bad enough to detract from the room. (Nothing we didn't expect based on the inn's pictures and room descriptions.) We kept the windows open during the day and came home to a naturally fresh, cool room in the evening. The little sitting area in the room is sweet, but would have been nicer with two chairs instead of the one chair and small fridge. (Perhaps the little fridge would have been better under the slope?) My husband sat out on our private balcony in the morning mostly because there was only one real spot to sit in the room. (The balcony is adorable but only overlooks the parking lot/back of the house. Nice for reading but not looking.) Dan, the owner, is everything described in previous posts. Knowledgeable and friendly, as is his staff. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: If you are tall, the secret room would not be a good choice.
