Acadia is one of the great treasures of the national park service. Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Point, Cadillac Mountain, and Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse are all beautiful destinations where granite formations, forests of pine and birch, and the Atlantic Ocean are part of the scenes. Roads and parking lots are well maintained and easy to navigate. We did not take advantage of the free Park service bus tours as I wanted to be able to stop when desired to take photos and climb to good vantage points for the pix. September was a great time to visit with fewer crowds. Tree color has yet to begin changing by mid-September. Plan to spend a full day to get around to the separate sections of the park spread across Mount Desert Island.

Recommend this as the tour to take as a first activity in the area. Our guide Roger, sixth generation native, shared history of the area and people as well as the park while pointing out key visuals to take in during the tour. Tour allowed comfortable stops at primary points of interest in the park. If you are particularly attentive, ask good questions and show an interesting the area, Roger may just comp a popover sample lagniappe from the Jordan Pond House for you.

We were so glad we took this 3 hour bus tour of the 27 driveable miles of Arcadia. We'd never been there before, had no knowledge of the driving/parking rules peculiar to this park, and would have both wasted a lot of time and not understood what we were seeing. Our bus driver/tour director was incredibly knowledgeable, humorous, and attentive to individual passengers. We highly recommend that you take an overview drive such as this before venturing forth on your own so you have a clear idea of the breadth and scope of Arcadia and can plan your time there much more efficiently. It was worth every bit of the $30 ticket.

We came in on a cruise and chose this outfit based on TA. Heather drove our bus, and she did a great job narrating the history and her own experiences. Cadillac Mountain was so scenic. Thunder Hole wasn't thundering, but it was pretty. Jordan Pond was a little crowded. The tour whetted our appetite to get to know Bar Harbor better.
