We stayed here recently and found both pluses and minuses at this B&B. The staff was welcoming and very helpful--felt like we were staying with a cousin or aunt. The breakfast was delicious and bountiful, and found the setting in the Victorian dining room to be just what we expected. The B&B is sited in a fairly quiet area, and it is convenient to the shops and attractions in Bar Harbor and is easy to get to Acadia from there. There was sufficient parking, and the back of the property is a big flower garden. The downside was our "suite". Please note that we stayed in an auxiliary building to the rear of the main B&B so I can not comment on the bedrooms in that area. But our suite, which consisted of a sitting area with two twin beds, a bathroom, and a small bedroom with a queen bed was in need of some updating--and in general a little "love". There were lights in the bathroom, even above the shower/tub area, that were not finished and open directly to the lightbulb, the flooring was tired and worn out with what appeared to be burn marks from cigarettes, open shelving held miscellaneous items including a toilet bowl brush and cleaning items, and the room in general was a bit worn and shabby. The bath did have a whirlpool tub, but the tub surround was a mishmash of materials and not really finished off. We arrived on an unusually hot day for Maine, and the room air conditioners were not on and it was very hot inside although by bedtime it had cooled off. The room has plenty of potential that could be reached with some thoughtful updating and sprucing up.

I'm sorry that your stay with us was not entirely happy. I need to clarify some of your complaints. The shower fixture repair had been ordered and in now complete. The recessed light bulb fixture in the ceiling of the bathroom was put there to prevent a tall persons from hitting his or her head n a protruding fixture. Someone had put the wrong light bulb in it. It is supposed to have a wide decorative bulb that hides the interior of the fixture. We did not check on that so you thought it was not finished. We put the right bulb in, but now we have put a glass globe plate over it- it looks more finished The result is less light since the heat build up has to be avoided. But there are other lights in the bathroom. The two small (1/3 inch circles) have been repaired. We are a non smoking property so I don't know their origin. The open shelving is there because we have families using that unit and closed door shelves hold in moisture. Children can see what they have and easily put it away. The "cleaning" supplies are dishwashing liquid and two towels put there for the convenience of any famili4es who may want to wash out a cup or glass for re-use between the visit from a maid. We have removed the toilet brush which was on the back corner of the very top shelf and not easily noticed by the maids. The tub surround is plastic and is tight and in good shape,; the tiles above it match except for onr in a top corner. They are clean and neat, The bath floor vinyl is also tight and not cracked, (except for the two small holes - now repaired) is a pastel color with a white background. I asked four different people to look at it and none saw any problems that needed attention. I guess that the white/oastel corlors don't look good to you. As to the air conditioners -: we are a Maine Environmental Leader property and as such do not run air conditioners when no one is in the room. There is a door and four windows that can be opened in the living room and cross ventilation is provided by opening the three windows on the opposite side of the apartment.. Here in Bar Harbor we always cool down at night because the 60 degree ocean water provides natural air conditioning. I think I must mention that the room is furnished with authentic antique marble-top bureaus and tables; -the bed in one room can be amade up as twins or as one king; the other is a queen sixed bed; there is a small drop leaf table that vcan be opened in the sitting area for games etc, There are four comfortable, new overstuffed easy chairs; there is a flat sc reen TV with a DVD player in each bedroom, beautiful oriental rugs on the floors, a phone system with free local calling and voice mail for your convenience. In addition, there is a porch with translucent roof to let in light, but keep out rain and it has four chairs and a table (the chairs cost -at hotel rates_$300 each), This porch looks over our award winning gardens. It( It finally stopped raining this year and we've been able to get it painted both deck & railings. You can walk through the gardens to breakfast in the inn and to our wine & cheese social hour - all included in the rates. We are almost the only in in the village of Bar Harbor that csan accommodate familes or two couples in one unit, and we are one of the very few that has off-street parking for all of our guests. This unit has been one of our most popular unit with good reason: we are trying to meet the vacation needs of a group of people who are often ignored in the downtown Bar Harbor area. We are always glad when our guests point out ideas for improvement. and we have responded to yours. I just wish you could have told us while you were here. Sincerely Marian Burns, owner

This was the first time my husband and I went to Bar Harbor and we really loved it. We stayed at the Mira Monte Inn and would stay there again. Our room was lovely and the breakfasts were the best! The owner, Marian, and her staff were very helpful, giving us information on the free bus and some nice restaurants. We sailed, took the Acadia bus tour, and went to Northeast Harbor and Bass Harbor. We'll be back next year and we'll stay at Mira Monte Inn.

We stayed 3 nights over the July 4th long weekend in a lovely, spacious room on the second floor facing the back gardens, with a sunny alcove and a little balcony where we enjoyed sitting and reading. The inn is on a relatively quiet street but we were glad our room was in the back of the building. The room had A/C, a working fireplace (with remote control), flat-screen TV, and a large bathroom with jacuzzi tub and shower. The location is great -- a short walk to downtown Bar Harbor, with easy access to many shops, good restaurants, boat cruises, the local free shuttle bus, and the tours going to Acadia National Park. We rarely needed to use our car. The owner, Marian Burns, a former teacher, is a pillar of the community who has been honored for her leadership and high standards -- she even was the grand marshall of the local July 4th parade this year. She sits with the guests at the long dining room table at breakfast every morning and in the living room during the late afternoon for wine & cheese, telling stories, answering questions about the area, and giving advice on everything from scenic hikes to driving directions to restaurant recommendations. Marian runs a tight ship, with everything done a certain way, mixing traditional hospitality with modern conveniences. The staff were all helpful and pleasant. The daily breakfast buffet is varied and filling, with homemade hot and cold cereals, fruited waffles and fresh maple syrup, yogurt, juices, milk, coffee and tea, toast, bagels, several kinds of fresh baked muffins and coffee cakes, steamed (hard-cooked) eggs, fresh fruit salad, and a couple of breakfast-style egg casseroles (one with meat, one vegetarian). We always found plenty of items we liked. There were many different places where we could sit and enjoy a leisurely breakfast -- at the dining table, in a nice enclosed porch, in a parlor area with an old upright piano, or in the pleasant garden areas out back -- and make plans for the day. This was our first trip to Bar Harbor, and we had a great experience at the Mira Monte Inn.

This is the nicest B&B I have ever stayed. The breakfast was delicious, especially the blueberry pancakes and blueberry muffin casserole! The room was large, comfortable, and convenient. I would stay at the Mira Monte Inn again...as soon as possible.

Miramonte's Web site says with piquant modesty "the romantic atmosphere is said to be friendly, welcoming and cheerful." Well, add my wife and me to the list of those who say it.

The inn turned out to be as charming as its Web site had led us to hope. Our room (the Newport) was clean and comfortable and exuded the aura of the Victorian millionaire's "cottage" that Miramonte once was. The owners and staff are gracious, accommodating, and genuinely friendly.

If you don't mind serving yourself from a buffet, the breakfast spread is likely to be about as good as B&B breakfasts get. Fresh-baked breads and pastries, hard-steamed eggs (better than boiled), usually two quiches, dry cereal and oatmeal, fresh fruit, etc, etc. As the owners say, it's about choice, both in what you choose to eat and in which of the delightful nooks and porches you choose to eat it at.
