“Stingy hotel that relies on getting Japanese customers since it's a Japanese hotel (and not on quality/experience)”
Reviewed January 21, 2011

I stayed here for 3 nights with my wife to join my sister in laws wedding. The first impression was very good with very big rooms, especially when coming from Japan, balcony with a view over the sea and a generally luxurious looking room.

But then after a while you started to notice small issues that makes you less impressed with the room and hotel. Example includes slightly torn wallpaper, broken lightbulbs, broken light switch to the bed light, not really well cleaned in places that are normally out of sight. The TV in the room was a small and pretty old CRT TV with a remote control that didn't work very well.

There were internet WiFi connection, but it was not complementary. In fact it was very expensive. One full day of internet access would have costed about the same as I pay for one month of 100 Mbit/s internet in my apartment back home.

The hotel room itself was good even with these small issues, but since the hotel is pretty expensive and are trying to look like a luxurious hotel it gives a somewhat bad overall impression. I wouldn't even have noticed similar issues at a budget hotel, but at a place like this it really stands out.

Since Hotel Nikko is owned by JAL a lot of Japanese stay there out of habit and because it's a hotel associated with a Japanese airline. It feels to me like this perticular hotel takes these kind of guests for granted and doesn't really bother to keep the hotel in great shape or well cleaned. They just barely do what is required in order to keep costs down.

The location, the nature, the view, the pool and the beach was very good and I really enjoyed my stay. But if I come back to Guam I would most likely try out some of the many other hotels along the beach.

When we arrived at 7am we were first informed that we would have to wait until 2pm to obtain our room and that we should park our car ourselves and carry our 6 pieces of luggage (including two dive bags) in ourselves as the bell service personnel were not available. When we suggested that we needed more help than this, a manager took over and offered us early check-in for an additional 50% of a day's rate (which we accepted) and almost immediately found a bellman to help with our luggage and supply valet parking. Though it took over an hour to obtain that room, we were given one with a fantastic view on the 15th floor for only 1/3 of an additional day's rate. Valet parking was not charged.. Our rate was $125/day with additional tax but no service charge. The room had a comfortable balcony overlooking the other hotels and the bay. The room itself was comfortable and fairly large but with a tiny utilitarian bathroom.

There are no work-out facilities in the hotel. No individual drink service at the beach or pool, though there is a bar. There is no doorman, and if you request valet parking, the security officer fetches a bellman from inside the hotel, 50 meters away. There is no intercom between the very front of the hotel (where your car pulls up and where the security person may be found) and the belldesk in the lobbly.

We were disappointed with the chinese breakfast, prix fixe $20. The next day we were also disappointed with the american breakfast located elsewhere. We did not try the chinese restaurant on the 16th floor.

In room internet charge of $16/day.

The hotel is at the end of the "strip", so it is about 1/2 mile walk to the start of the business area. Shuttles to the brand boutique stores are periodically available.

Concierge service friendly but not too helpful. For instance they had no personal knowlege about the Guam scuba dive operators.

Japanese appears to be the lingua franca at this hotel, and most of the guests are from Japan.

A 1970's hotel which lacks obvious upkeep: walls are scuffed, rugs old, pool & beach areas grungy looking, but rooms are clean and staff responsive.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Nikko in Guam. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The location was a bit out of the way, but not so far away that it was difficult to reach the restaurants or shopping in the downtown area. The trolleys stop regularly at the hotel and make it easy to reach most destinations in the area. I would recommend getting a five day pass for the trolley as it was much cheaper than buying a one way or daily pass each day. The hotel has it's own beach and if you catch the tide right you can see a lot of tropical fish while snorkeling around the nearby reef (the only problem is that due to the proximity of the reef, you can only go swimming in the ocean while the tide is in, unlike other hotels that are a little closer to the middle of the bay where the water stays deeper even at low tide). The room was nice with a great view of the bay. The hotel staff did a great job keeping our room clean. The hotel has two children's pools, a larger pool for grown-ups, and a fairly long and fast waterslide. The hotel food was pricey and, from what we tasted at the poolside restaurant, was not worth the price that was charged (pass on the chicken strips or fried seafood, there are much better options for this in the downtown area). The location is great for a getaway if you don't mind going out for your meals. The hotel has a children's playroom, but don't plan on dropping your kids off there while you go out to play in the sun. The hotel does not provide supervision for the playroom and children must be accompanied by an adult (better bring your sitter along or leave the kids with their grandparents if you don't plan on taking them with you everywhere you go). All that taken into account, we still had a great time and the Hotel Nikko proved to be a great place to stay while we were on our family vacation.

Crystal chapel is beautiful but the hotel is old. During visiting, the swimming pool is under repairing so visitors have to go to PIC (free)

This is a belated review of the Hotel Nikko. We have stayed here a number of times, while traveling for business, but then relocated to Guam and actually lived in this hotel, while waiting for our home to be ready. So, sometimes a solo traveler, and sometimes a family. On some occasions, we were comped breakfast for the duration of our stay. If not for the comp, we would have eaten breakfast elsewhere, as the buffet is quite expensive at about $25pp. The food on the buffet is excellent, but be aware that it is geared more towards the Asian tourist than westerners or locals. For example, there is always rice, fish, and other items that are asian cuisine, such as fried rice, or chow mein. There is a pretty generous salad bar and omelet station as well, and if you take items from the food bar, such as cheese, they will put them in an omelet for you. But, back to the hotel!

The rooms are nice, all with ocean views. The hotel is wing-shaped, and if you take a room towards the center of the hotel, you will be greeted each morning by schools of spinner dolphins in front of your room, and you can see them from your balcony. The beds are low, which is typical for Asian hotels. There are refrigerators in the rooms, and a separate bath. The staff is not the warmest towards westerners, and if you are not familiar with the Asian cultures, it would be easy to feel offended by their treatment. This hotel is Japanese-owned, and so caters to that demographic. The hotel has a water slide, and a large enough pool, and also sits right on the beach. Beware of leaving your belongings unattended, as the hotel sits next to Gun Beach, which is a hangout for local partying folks, and there is easy access to the pool areas. Even though there are security guards, Guam's definition of 'security guard' is not what westerners would expect. The local definition of security guard is 'a person who wears a uniform and sits and watches everything that happens, while they are awake'. Really. Lived here for 5 years, believe it!

Also, the hotel has a dinner show on the property, which I believe runs most nights. It's quite the novelty, to be able to see it from your room balcony, for the first night. After that, it's loud, and goes late into the evening, and will keep you awake. The rooms farthest toward the right, when you are facing the beach, will have it the loudest. If you are hoping to get an early night's rest, or just peace and quiet, this might be a problem.

The housekeeping was not the best. Sometimes they came, sometimes they didn't, and there didn't seem to be much of a pattern to it. Also, if you need something like pillows, or towels, and you call the desk, it can be hours, or hours and hours, before you get whatever you called for.

There are plenty of choices in Tamuning, when it comes to hotels, and if you are planning a trip to Guam, I would check them out before staying at the Nikko. Overall, it's beautiful to look at, but only average when it comes to services and customer service.

I love the long water slider of the hotel. The room was spacious and nice but its bathroom didn't worth 4-stars. It was so small and needed refurbishment. The beach was very shallow and filled with reef. It was difficult to snorkel due to too shallow the beach was. The reef and high wave can cause some cuts and injury. Thanks to that, there were so many varieties of fishes around the reef. The hotel is quite far from the shopping area so you might have to walk a long way if you stay late at night when the tram stops running. The good thing is that all rooms of this hotel have ocean view.
