“Can you keep a secret?”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

Don't tell anyone, but the best beach on the Big Island is open to everyone (not just military families) on weekends and many weekdays. OK, the beach is no better or worse than Waimanalo Beach or Kailua Beach (two of the world's highest ranked), but few people go here.

If you're lucky, on weekdays you can have a mile of beach all to yourself. It's a great place for kids (mild break) and camping (weekends only).

“A Must!”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

Stayed at Bellows for 3 nights. This place is absolutely magical. The beaches are beautiful and the sand is perfect. The one negative is that the wind is much stronger here than in Waikiki, but nothing you can't handle. The water is blue, and the temps are perfect. Stayed at one of the condos, perfect for a quick vacation!

“One of the Best Beaches”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

Bellows is actually two parts. The public side where anyone can enjoy the beach and the military side where you have to have an ID card to get through the gate. The beach is kept very clean with the militarys assistance and there is plenty to enjoy. The area is relatively free of rocks or reefs so there is little fear of injury. The undercurrent can be difficult at times but the lifeguards do a great job of posting important information on conditions. The military side of Bellows has a rental shop where you can rent pretty much anything for water sports. Boogie boarding and kayaking are some of the favorite things here with the vast majority using boogie boards. There are some chances for surfers and body surfers to catch a wave but they are few due to the size. Boogie boards reign the ocean here since most of the waves are 2-4 ft.

“Enjoy on the weekends!”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

Beautiful sandy beach at Windward Coast, it is opened to public access just at the weekends. It is like other beaches like Kailua and Kalama, but not crowded! It is not my favorite beach in Oahu because I prefer the rocky ones, but the color of the sea is really impressive. So bad It was so windy and cloudy when we went there. Plenty space for parking and great areas with trees to picnic. Note that there is an area restricted for military access even on weekend days (you must have a military ID to enter). We got the wrong way and were walking to this area, but fortunately the officer explained the restriction to us.
