Just outside of Wahiawa (Oahu) are the ancient Hawaiian birthing stones. They were used by mothers when giving birth. The site was also thought to be good luck for fertility

Not really sure what we were expecting but it's a bunch of rocks in a field. Nice signage and explanations. Close to the Dole Plantation.

I would give this place five stars for its cultural significance alone. However, it is quite difficult to find as one is speeding down the highway, the parking is far from adequate, and the signage is non-existent. Having said all that, it is still worth visiting. This was the place where the Hawaiian kings were born, the navel of the islands, so to speak, and received spiritual energy or mana from the gods to rule the islands. The Hawaiians also used the mountain range as a calendar. The area is now surrounded by tall grasses. I have been here several times and it has never been crowded. Even with the muddy parking lot, I have had no trouble parking. It is a short walk to the stones. This is an interesting place to stop on the way up to the North Shore. There is supposed to be a heiau nearby as well, although I have not visited it.

We went during a visit to the north coast. We might have missed it had we not read about it prior to the day trip.easily found using the GPS but you might miss the turnoff otherwise. It's right at the lights. The car park is small and red dirt. The walk to the site is also red dirt. The site is well cared for but there is no information at the site. Thankfully we read up before going and thus it meant more than it would have otherwise. I was pleased to see a sacred site remain uncommercialised. Worth stopping for the cultural significance.

Don't blink or you'll miss the turn off for the Birthing Stones--it's right at the interesection. There is only enough room for about a half dozen cars in the dirt parking lot...but that's typically enough. It's an easy walk to the stones, there's some awesome flora to see, and the stones are interesting. That said, you won't be overly "wow'd". It's a neat, nice place to visit. It's free--so you can't complain. Worth doing on your way to the North Shore or downtown depending on which way you're going...if you're going through/by Wahiawa, it's worth the 30 minute stop.
