“Pros and Cons”
Reviewed January 1, 2007

Pros:
1. the hotel ground and surroundings are beautiful and nicely landscaped.
2. the lagoons are perfectly safe for small children, you can rent a limited number of water toys at logoon #3 (the one directly in front of the beach club).
3. the rooms are new and nicely furnished, it feels more like an upscale apartment than a hotel room.
4. very friendly staff - restaraunts, front desk, bell, desk, concierge ... everyone is helpful. Especially the lovely lady Tina at concierge, she saved my days couple of times by suggesting tours that fit our need perferctly.
5. nice restaraunts at JW Marriott, which is about half a mile away on paved, lit ocean fron pathway. nothing special about the only restaraunt onsite, except that they made above-average pina colada :)
6. if you're a runner like me, you won't be able to resist suiting up and running along the path way along the lagoons, it's a bit short, but with everything so beautiful, you wouldn't mind making a couple of roundtrips.
7. Ko Olina marina is right next door, couple of excursions depart from there, again, the concierge desk can be very helpful there.

My impression of the common forum complaints -
1. flight path - I found it fun to watch jets flying over the hotel, the noise is totally an non-issue to me (and I'm very sensitive type).
2. construction - it is being done on both sides of the existing buildings, the time is limited, I believe 8-5, and the noise is not that noticable with the ocean-waves, but I did find myself having to conciously avoid the cranes when I'm framing with my cameras. While it's something you can totally ignore and still have a great time, it's a bit annoying, especially if you expect a "perfect" vacation.

cons -
1. location - the hotel's 25-30 minutes drive away from Wakiki, on a good day. If your itenary includes Hanauma bay, you're at a disadvantage competing with the big crowd 20 miles closer than you.
2. most tours/excursions leave from Wakiki, so definitely get a car.

Hope this is helpful.

We stayed Dec 21-26th in a guest room with a mountain view. This was part of a Marriott Vacations Preview package. I will start by saying we attended a no pressure sales presentation and did not make a purchase at this property.

We had a wonderful Christmas Holiday! We stayed on Waikiki Beach for a few days at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and then the Marriott Ko Olina property. A perfect combination of locations for us.

Positives about Marriott Ko Olina: Tranquil location, the swimming coves, friendly staff, free onsite laundry, beautiful leis upon arrival, kitchenettes, great for preparing a few meal a day, 2 swimming pools, easy access to pool lounge chairs

Negatives: lack of restaurant choices on site. Food is pricey for what you get. Easily solved by traveling 5 minutes to closeby restaurants or making food purchases at the Safeway grocery store.

I would recommend this resort for families travelling to Oahu.

  • Liked — friendly staff, peaceful location, ocean, kitchenette/laundry/free wireless internet
  • Disliked — limited restaurant choices
  • Tips/Secrets — try closeby restaurants and purchase food at safeway grocery store

We just returned from a week at the Beach Club. It was fantastic -Absolutely perfect place for a family with young children. A full slate of kid’s activities will keep the little ones busy and occupied. The lagoon beach is perfect for little ones as the waves are broken up by the outer rocks and come in very small. Our youngest is 2 and he had a fantastic time play at both the beach and the beach pool.

There is only one dining option currently that serves burgers, salads , and sandwiches. A nicer restaurant is slated to open the end of January 07. The rooms have kitchens and the property has great BBQ’s so a trip to Safeway (4 miles) and your set, also many restaurants and fast food near Safeway.

If you have kids, take them over to the JW Marriott (short walk or shuttle) to look at the baby sharks and rays.

There’s a great beach walk that runs just short of 2 miles in front of the property -Well light at night and very safe.

There is construction on both sides of the property, but it didn’t bother us a bit.

I will definitely recommend to friends and go back as soon as possible.

We stayed at Ko Olina Thanksgiving week in a full 2 bedroom/2 bath unit. It was in the older building on the sixth floor and was an ocean view.
The unit was very nice. Clean, spacious and a full kitchen. We went with our 3 teenagers and space was not a problem.
As others have said, this resort is about a half hour West of the airport, so it is away from the "action" of Waikiki. This was ok with my husband and I, but our kids got a little bored.
The restaurant situation should get better with the new restaurant that is going in. Also, we attended a sales presentation and were told that in the next five years, they will be adding 2 more buildings and that the area between the beach club and the Marriott hotel will be filled in with hotels, condos, shops and restuarants. It would be interesting to go back and see it then.
The town about 3 miles east does have Safeway, Longs, KMart, etc. Every fast food outlet known to mankind. Also a very nice Outback that we ate at one night. There is also a great water park about 1 mile from the resort that we went to one day. Lots of fun! Water slides, wave pools, etc
One day we went to Pearl Harbor and were warned to go early as they only give out 4,000 tickets a day for the film and ferry ride to the Arizona. We got there at 10:00 and had to kill time until 11:30 for our turn. Our kids loved it, so it was worth the wait. That same day we went to Waikiki and had lunch at Duke's and then went to Waikiki beach. Big mistake! It was mobbed! So many people. We ended up driving back at 4:00, hitting commute traffic and it took about 1 1/2 hours to get back to Ko Olina. If you do go to Waikiki, don't forget about the traffic!
As far as the staff at the resort, they were wonderful. Every person was friendly, helpful and knowledgable.
There are alot of little kids at this resort. Instead of sitting by the pools, we went to the lawn area which faced the lagoons. Much better. It would be nice if one of the new pools they are buiding would be an "adult only" pool.
We hardly noticed the construction noise, although looking out our balcony, was a crane in the distance.
Overall, this is a beautiful resort, great for families and away from the crowds of Waikiki.

  • Liked — Nice, spacious, clean unit.
  • Disliked — Too many young kids at the pools.

My husband and I stayed with my inlaws in a 2 bdrm suite for 1 week and had a superb time. Construction noise minimal, saw planes but again minimal noise. The views, and crashing waves are enough to distract anything unpleasant. Enough activities on site for kids and adults, and if you have travelled anywhere in the world, you still need to drive to check out other attractions, so this was not a big issue either. Going into Waikiki is a day trip, not a quick couple of hours, but again not a big deal. Wonderful time had by all. Will definitely visit again.

Beautiful private lagoons! I enjoyed most aspects of this property. If you're interested in relaxation, this is the place. Did I mention the lagoons? If you need action and shopping (other than an outlet 10 minutes away), this is NOT the place. It's about 30 minutes from most attractions. It could take 45 minutes to Waikiki. I stayed there during the 2006 Thanksgiving week. My entire family of 7 loved it. The check-in process needed serious help (too slow), and the parking structure was inadequate. Don't plan on early check-in or late check-out. This isn't a standard Marriott property, so your elite status means squat. They're quite inflexible on that end. On a positive note, the staff was generally positive and friendly as they told you to take a hike.

This resort was beautiful, welcoming, and away from the busyness of Waikiki.

We were here on our honeymoon and had a great time. One thing lacking is selection of places to eat on site but the neighboring town has A Lot of selection.

I would definetly come back especially if we had kids. We stayed on 11th floor newer of the 2 buildings and the 1 bedroom suite was clean, new, and comfortable.

Construction did not bother us and there was an airplane flying once in awhile but, neither of these things were distracting or horrible.
