“Don't confuse it with the JW Marriott”
Reviewed December 8, 2004

We pulled into the beautiful covered bell area of the JW Marriott, thinking this is where our hotel was. They said, nope, you're not here, you're over there where the constuction is going on. The JW was decorated sumptuously, and we hoped the Beach Club would be equally beautiful and romantic. Fat Chance. It's a time-share building that sells rooms when they have extra inventory. Oh man, every morning we woke up to men pounding on cement, slamming stuff around on steel beams, and lots of dust in the air flowing into our balcony. We had to shut the door to balcony to keep out the racket and dust blowing in. It was not sumptuous like the JW. It was probably once beautifully decorated when they were trying to get people to buy time shares there, but, now they have their money and they weren't going out of their way to impress guests. This property is NOT the JW Marriott as other reviewers have mistakenly stated. This is the time share building. I won't be back to this property. I'll be much more cautious next time to book a stay at the JW Marriott at Ko Olina, not Marriott's Ko Olina Beach club. The time share building is way to expensive for what you get. There are only 4 handicap spots near the bell area. You have to know to go into the parking structure where you will find parking stalls right next to the elevators. The rooms are beautiful if you're looking for beautiful rooms. But if you're wanting to sit on the balcony and enjoy nature, you'll be furious.

We spent 6 days at the Ko Olina, returning home October 6. It was a positive experience from beginning to end. The Ko Olina is set in a quiet, "untouristy" area of Oahu on the West shore, and the setting is one of the most amazing things I've seen. The lobby is all open air with a roof and pillars but no doors or windows, the breeze blows through and the ocean is right at your fingertips. From the front desk as you look to your right it is truly breathtaking! What I thought at first was a big mural of the ocean with palm trees, was actually the ocean and palm trees! Activities are planned daily for those who want to participate, from making your own lei, to dolphin snorkeling trips (which was also incredible).

There is a restaurant right on the beach front, which was wonderful to be able to eat dinner and watch the sun set over the ocean. While you eat there is also a live band playing soothing Hawaiian music and every few songs a hula dancer will also perform. There are other restaurants close by, just a 5 minute drive from Ko Olina, like Chili's, even Wendy's and McDonalds. Also a Safeway if you'd like to stock up your fridge in the room.

The lagoons are relaxing and fun to swim in or to just sit and lounge on the chairs in the sand. I really had goosebumps just sitting there taking it all in. The pools are big and warmer than the ocean ( of course ) so it's fun to take a dip in them after you've been in the ocean.

Last, the staff is amazing. They greet you with an "aloha" each time they see you. They smile, and ask if they can do anything for you. They went out of their way several times to make sure our stay was the best it could be. One example, I needed a phone number, I was in the lobby and asked a bell hop if he knew where I could find a phone book. He quickly retrived one for me, asked me what number I needed and started to look it up himself, after not being able to find it, he took out his cell phone and dialed information, wrote the number down and gave it to me. Small little things like this made the experience one we will never forget.

They got it all right at the Ko Olina!

The JW @ Ko Olina is a perfect getaway for Oahu travelers who want great weather and no trafic. There are only a couple of 4+ star resorts on the island. Turtle Bay has a worn down 70's feeling, and unpredictable weather, and the others are in the city. Hawaii should be about beaches and drinks, not about trafic and large crowded beaches. The Ko Olina was peaceful. the rooms are quite large, though I would not recommend the deluxe Ocean Front. You get the same view from the Ocen View rooms in the main building, and save yourself $100 a night. The staff was very nice. The bell hop took an hour to bring our luggage, but other than that, everyone was nice. The pool is small and filled with kids, which is great if you have them. However, there are 4 large bays, with quite beaches, which is really why you came. No alcohol allowed on the beach, which is unfortuneate. The food was fine and borderline "great" for hotel food. Whoever complained about the prices, has not traveled much. two burgers, fries and drinks were only $30, which is standard in Hawaii. There are typical fast food joints in the next town, about 5 minutes away. Roy's Resteraunt at the golf course was a typical country club place, but pretty good. this is one of the few places on Oahu where you can get away from the crowds, stay in luxury and have consistantly good weather.

Ko Olina is a Marriott time share resort. Phase I of four phases is complete, with Phase II in progress next door. Ko Olina is located on the West Coast of Oahu fairly secluded from the rest of the island. The facility, rooms, swimming pools and 4 lagoon areas for swimming are all very nice. The beach front restaurant is average (for food) above average for location, fun and entertainment. The 1 bedroom rooms have a full kitchen, dining area, pull out sofa bed and nice balcony, the guest rooms that adjoin the 1 bedroom units (lock offs) have a refrigerator and bar area, small balcony, bed and sofa bed.

The resort gets 4 stars primarily because it is a timeshare and NOT a fine class hotel (like the JW Marriott located on the opposite end of the property). It is new for now - but you get the feeling that over use and timeshare abuse is just around the corner. Also, the adjacent property will eventually have a (Marriott) Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons and, of course, three more time share buildings. So enjoy it while you can, within the next 5 years, what was once a nice off the beaten path, will transform into Waikiki West.

Bottom line - Ko Olina is a nice condominium style property with all the conveniences of home (if you stay in a 1 bedroom unit or more). It is secluded with nice pools and interesting swimmable lagoon areas. The fitness facility is very good to excellent with a nice sauna and steam area. You won't be disappointed unless you are expecting a world class resort experience - I think for that it falls a little bit short.

We just spent a wonderful week at the Ko Olina Beach Club. Here are some tips to save some money while in Oahu and the Beach Club. The first thing I did was to order an Entertainment Book for Hawaii. It listed all the islands but there was plenty of Oahu restaurants and activities. There were discounts for Polynesian Cultural Center, Dole Whips at the Dole Plantations, and not to forget many of the restaurants that had buy one, get one free. We also stopped at the Kmart and bought a big cooler to keep in the rental car. Each morning, we would fill up the cooler with ice and drinks for the day. This saved so much money and we never had to stop and pay for drinks. Also, take advantage of the coupons in the airport brochures.
Make sure you find Sean O'Reilly at the cabana stations. He will give you great ideas of what you need to do on the island. He has a special recommendation for a beach that is great for body surfing. We also grilled burgers on the outdoor grill one night which is near the towel station. The beach club is beautiful, as well as the rooms. Make sure you buy some laundry detergent while you're there and do a little wash. I was convinced that I wasn't going to do laundry on vacation but was glad I did when I came home and most of the clothes were clean. Remember that the washer is small, so the loads really need to be small.
If you are traveling to the North Shore on your way to the Polynesian Cultural Center, make sure that you stop at Ted's Bakery. They have a wonderful selection of pies and cakes at reasonable prices. The lagoons are beautiful and quiet. This was absolutely one of the best vacations that our family has taken.

We are owners who bought a week at the Marriott Beach Club in Ko Olina after seeing the pictures of it while at the Maui Marriott. Pictures did not do the condos justice. We try to get to the islands at least once a year and this is by far the nicest room/condo we have stayed in on the islands. The condo is a 2 bedroom 2 bath with a living area, dining area, full kitchen and even has a washer and dryer. If you like the action of Wakiki this may not be the best place for you although there are shuttles to downtown. I have stayed in Wakiki and prefer the more laid back atmosphere of Ko Olina. The grounds were spotless, the pools great, and the staff very helpful. At this time the resort is still under construction so the restaraunts are limited to the pool grill or the ones at the JW Marriott a 5 min walk away. This was not an issue for us since we preferred utilizing the full kitchen or pool BBQs after a stop at the nearby Safeway (about 10 min drive). We enjoyed our stay so much that we and our relatives bought another week with Marriott but a 3 bedroom this time which will be done in 2006.
