“Paradise”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

This is my personal paradise. I have timeshare here which I can swap out to other destinations. I also live on the US east coast, so it’s a long journey to get here. None the less, my wife and I choose to come here most years and usually stay for 2 weeks. On site, there are three pool areas: a ‘sports pool’ area where, for example, you can play water volley ball; a ‘fun’ area with tunnels and waterfalls; and a ‘reflection’ area where they ask people to be quiet. The Marriott facility is build beside a lagoon with beautiful soft sand which provides safe swimming in Pacific water. There is an on-site bar and grill called Longboard, which also runs a tikki bar in the fun pool area. Other local dining includes Roy’s and a Mexican restaurant, and several restaurants in the nearby JW Marriott Ihilani, of which our favorite is Azul’s. These are all served by a shuttle bus that runs constantly through the day and evening.

Also scattered round the site are plenty of bar-b-que pits, which provide an economic alternative to eating out or cooking in your room. I like using these bar-b-ques as I meet all sorts of interesting people there from different parts of the US and other countries.

All the staff are very friendly, helpful and give the impression that they love working there, and that is part of the appeal of the place. Despite the fact that is a large facility with a lot of people there, it is never crowded, and you are made to feel that you are special.

I have just returned from a 2 week stay where we hosted my son’s ‘destination’ wedding, and had an absolutely wonderful time. We accommodated a total of eight people, 5 of whom had never been to Hawaii before; it was an international group that came from as far away as Ukraine, Moscow and London. All of them thoroughly enjoyed their stay and had a wonderful time. For the wedding, we used the services of Cathy, the local wedding planner (not sure if she actually works for Marriott) who did an excellent job, and located the service on an idyllic site on a grass lawn overlooking the lagoon, just before sunset.

I’ve saved the best to last, those sunsets. The resort faces west looking over the lagoon to the open ocean, and every evening there is a beautiful sunset. As the sun goes down, the sky lights up with reds, oranges and yellows. I can think of nothing better than sitting with good friends, mai-tai in hand, watching the sun go down at Ko’Olina.

Room Tip: Ocean view is better than Mountain view though more expensive. However, we spend little time in the...

Was my first really bad Marriott experience. We reserved the room with ocean view. Staff put us into the room with "best ocean view in the hotel", but the room was facing the pool and didn't have ocean view at all! Same story with "Penthouse" - exactly the same room as before in terms of size and view, but on the highest floor. Service is unacceptable - sheets in the room are not changed every day. Restaurant service at the same level - takes 2+ attempt to get what you ordered. Would not recommend to anyone.

We were lucky enough to be on the 16th floor and it feels like a dream. We can see the Land and the Ocean and the people are SO nice. Every person we've come in contact with, from Jason at the Bell desk to Marilou and JoAnn at Longboards restaurant, have been amazing.

The reality check is that for anything affordable to eat, you need to drive to Safeway (and be sure you're staying in a one bedroom so you can cook it- or use the grills outside). You can get normal priced drinks and snacks from 3-6 Happy Hour at Longboards, but don't forget all the little expenses when you're planning your trip. If you have a car, make sure to fold in the parking expenses ($30 each night self or valet), and gas is expensive, so keep in mind how far this property is away from Honolulu/Sea Life Park/North Shore).

This isn't the place to stay if you are here to tour all of the island. This is the staycation getaway. Lagoons, pool with slide, happy hour, hot tubs, excellent rooms, fantastic sunsets!

Enjoy!!

Room Tip: Studio if you don't need to cook, One Bedroom if you do. 16th floor rooms have vaulted ceilings...

This was our second stay at this property and again, we were not disappointed. The grounds are beautiful, the staff was so friendly and our rooms were perfect. We were on the 8th floor in the Hale Noa tower and overlooked the pools below. The concierge helped us book activities, the Marketplace is a great place to grab a quick snack, the 3 mile trail was great for an early morning walk and it was great having Chuck's Steak and Seafood right on the property! Overall, a great vacation!

We booked a 2 bedroom villa for a weekend get away. Room was very nice and clean and there was more than enough room for my family of 4 with visiting guests. Entering the room, the kitchen area was well supplied with a full sized fridge, dish washer, electric stove/oven and even had a washer/dryer in the closet. A dining table with seating for 6 and a good sized living room in front of a large (50" flat panel TV I think). with queen sofa bed and a couple of sitting chairs and a coffee table. on one side, the master bedroom could be accessed via a door from the living room or through the master bath door across from the kitchen. Master bedroom was large with a work desk, king sized bed and a 42" TV on a dresser. Closet contained a safe, iron and ironing board. Master bath had a large soaking tub in a room adjacent to the bedroom which had opening shutter windows to allow you to sit in the tub and look through the bedroom out to the windows and the view beyond. There was also a separate counter area with full mirror and sink in the tub area. A door separated the toilet/glass enclosed shower from the master bedroom/soaking tub. The second room on the other side of the living area also had a king bed with 42" TV on a dresser. it also had a couple of sitting chairs, coffee table and a queen sofabed. This room had it's own bathroom with sink, toilet and tub/shower combo.

The resort was wonderful and we took advantage of the gas grilling area to cook up some bbq. There were 3 large pool areas. A family pool with sandy beach wading area going into a deeper swim around pool with an island in the middle. A 'reflection' pool which was a little more secluded with tropical plants and shrubs surrounding it and a Slide pool that had a water slide. Also, the real ocean beach protected lagoon was just a few steps beyond the pools. There were also at least 7 jacuzzis with 3 of them reserved as adults only.

For us, the location of this property was great. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Quiet, with lots of room to relax and unwind.

We stayed in a one bedroom, one bath guestroom. The space in the common areas was really good. My sister lives on Oahu so she was visiting while we were there and we had plenty of room in the kitchen, dining and living area for family dinners and just hanging out. One of my sisters slept on the pullout sofa and we were delighted to find that it was a tempurpedic mattress. She LOVED it. The resort itself was fabulous. You really don't ever have to leave it. The restaurants are good, the pools wonderful and then of course you have the beach. We'll be going back again next year, I hope.

For those of you who do not like O'ahu's crowds, you should absolutely try Ko Olina. If you want the Maui or Big Island feel on O’ahu, Ko Olina is the place for you. Much more of a resort feel than the concrete jungle of Waikiki.

I travel to Hawaii monthly for business, and I often like to stay in different locations to test out vacation options. My firm is currently renting some condos at Ko Olina and I have stayed at the JW Marriott at Ko Olina before, so I have a great impression of Ko Olina and we have vacationed there before, staying at the Ko Olina Beach Villas. I tried this place out to have a point of comparison.

Unfortunately, there is no comparison. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong - per se - with this resort. The rooms are spacious (yes, the lanai's are small), reasonably well kept and clean. The pools are nice and, even though it is VERY LARGE it has a nice feel to it - I did not feel it was overcrowded and I certainly did not feel like one of 1,000 rooms. However, the amenities are a bit spartan - a bit like a Courtyard by Marriott in my opinion - and not worth the price you will pay. The location is superb, the beach and pools are world-class, and the restaurants are very good as well - but you can have all this and a nicer place to stay for a lot less money elsewhere in Ko Olina.

Also, I do not recommend this resort for extended business stay - parking is at a high premium and is expensive, and usual amenities for the business traveler are not really available.

Room Tip: Which tower you are in can make a big difference in your experience. Ask for one of the towers clos...
