“Resort is fantastic...food options secondary”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

We just completed a 9 night stay at Aulani and would come back anytime. The resort is amazing with the friendliest staff ever. A great 3 mile (round trip) walk/run on the paved walk between the hotel and the lagoon and a great exercise facility. Grounds are immaculate.

Dining options on property are not the best. AwaAwa has some excellent food but they're still figuring out how to seat people and will refuse to let you sit at an open table by the water and put you elsewhere even when asked directly. Food is pricey for what you get. If you have a car then leave the hotel (or walk to MonkeyPods across the street) and find local Hawaiian food which is fantastic.

The best thing we did was take the Hawaiian Food Tour (Hole in the Wall Tour) that isn't supported by Disney but was the highlight of our trip because not only did we have fun in the local parts of Honolulu but we also learned volumes of the local food scene.

The Olelo Room ended up being our favorite place on property. Live Hawaiian music starting at 5pm with a good happy hour food & drink menu. Cheese bread wasn't worth tasting but the fries, poke (ask for it raw vs seared) bowl, garlic fried, pork nachos, etc were fun and good. Sitting outside in the beautify Hawaiian evening can never be bad either. :)

The pools, slides, lagoon, etc. are all the best.

Room Tip: You need to specify if you want to overlook the lawn where they have evening movies and shows or not...

Let me say first that we are huge Disney fans, but Aulani is one big money grab!
The rooms are decent, even though we had to move up and down the floors to find our room, because the first one they assigned to us was taken!, the second was awful(parking lot view) and finally they found us one with the view we paid for, that was not occupied.
It is a huge hotel, over 800 rooms and you can easily get lost, or more important lose sight of your kids. They have all the amenities to make it fun, but even the lazy river is so long that you could get separated from your kid.
The lagoon is nice, but Disney seems to always run out of the free things to use...
My daughter loved Auntys beach house, where you have free activities and also premium activities ( they start at 82$ per child)
Food: you either eat anything fried, buffet or one of the 5 main dishes at Ama ama with a price tag between 38-45$
Needless to say we dined at Roy's across the street, same price, but about 20 main courses, which they are happy to modify for you if needed, and a nice break from screaming children.
We still paid every night 200$ but it was worth it, at ama ama you pay the same, but no choice and not that great.
The best was when we wanted to check out. If you like a late check out, Disney charges 287 $ for 4 hours!
The departing lounge is ridiculous, as mentioned before over 800 rooms, full of families with children. The lounge for the ladies( who in general also shower the children) has a total of TWO showers and about 30 square foot of space. just imagine the disaster!
I know out in Ko olina we are a captive audience, but does Disney really have to show us that they are only after our money in any which way they can???
We will go back to Disney world, because there the concept they created works, but never again Aulani, and it could be sooooo good.....

Room Tip: Take a dvc room and feed yourself for breakfast and lunch

The first thing I noticed were EVERY single staff provided superb service with a smile. They really go out of your way to help you. Even overhearing one staff talking to another staff on the phone was always polite and courteous. Here are some tips and comments.

Pools. My two kids ages 8 and 9 had a blast. Pools were not heavily chlorinated and not overly crowded. I always have nightmare regarding public water parks but Aulani's pool were clean from what I can see. Plenty of clean towels. Tip: Get the clean towels the night before because the lines can get somewhat crowded in mornings when they first open. Yes you need your wristbands changed as well with your towels as well but no one were checking the wristbands during the 1st part of the mornings.

Food: We tried the buffet dinner and their character breakfast. Dinner buffet was quite good with decent crab legs and oyster for me and prime rib for my wife. Im sure there are other restaurants that are slightly cheaper but its all about location and covenience. I would compare the buffet similiar to the higher end buffets in Las Vegas minus the desserts. Kids loved the character breakfast. It can get quite noisy with all the Character hooplah for couples wanting a quiet breakfast. Food was cheap and reasonable (Disney standards) in the snack shops by the pools during the afternoon hours. TIP. If you rented a car drive to the 1st exit on the highway (2.6 miles) and you will see a fairly new shopping center with various of stores. Aloha Salads sell very fresh and various kinds of salads from local farms. We ate there everyday. Also Target, Costco, an Organic market and a few fast foods are in that same area.

Snorkeling. Its man made in a reef tank where all the fish are in already. We already snorkeled in Maui. Nothing to snorkel by the beach.

Beach. Kids were disappointed because they asked me where were the waves. Beach design is enclosed by rocks offshore making little to no waves. Its a man made lagoon. Safe for toddlers but not fun for older kids. Skipped the beach the entire time. Rental car helped us alot to get to the nicer postcard beaches on the island.

Rooms. Very clean and well maintained. Turn down service nightly. Decent coffee in the room.

Laundry. They have washing machines and dryers on each floor or each wing. $3 for wash $3 for dry.

Starlit Hui. A free Luau type show twice a week. After attending the Polynesian Cultural Center the day before I was about to get comfortable watching the show until I realized they were dancing the conclusion. Wow that was short. 15 minutes max? Perfect length for toddlers/preschoolers.

You have to rent a car and explore the beauty on other parts of the island. I know lots of people just enjoy the stay at one location but my kids 8 and 9 wanted more exploring after two days at Aulani. If you don't explore you are missing alot. Its like staying at one hotel on the strip in Las Vegas or just staying in Midtown Manhattan without exploring the rest.

Starbucks is next door in Marriot. A short nice 5 minute walk.

Photo tips. They have photo pass photographers all over the resort. They will WITHOUT ANY HESITATION use your own personal camera, Ipads, Iphones, camera phones and take your pictures for you with the Disney Characters and other places. Someone brought a tripod but realized that was not needed since they will take your pictures with your own personal camera.
Photo tip#2. Use your camera flash when taking pics with the Disney characters outdoors. Someone with a similiar camera as mine asked why all their faces look dark when they took their picture. I asked him manually turn on his camera flash in the daytime and thanked me for the tip.

Cold water stations with cups throughout the pool area. Clean, refreshing and ice cold. No need to bring water bottles.

After 9pm resort is very quiet. Too quiet. Water slides closes at 8pm and pool/jacuzzi at 10pm.

Parking. We valet parked everyday. Why self park and look for a space when valet is the same price minus tips. Valet was fast and courteous.

Computers and wifi. Fast for being free. They have two computers to use for free. Yes its free but you need to put a credit card in so they can track usage. One PC is for boarding pass printing and the other PC is for general use. I had a laptop but needed to use their PC to print something. Surprisingly they only have one public PC for the entire resort but no one needed or waited for me while using it. Perhaps everyone brought their tablets and Ipads with them.

This was a weekend to celebrate my husband's birthday - no kids just us. We live about 10 miles away but we underestimated how much fun we would have. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by a friendly staff; thinking we would have to wait for our room since we arrived 2 hours early, turned out, our room was ready. Room is pretty standard; bed mattress firm sits high above the floor; small refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, dinnerware, hair dryer, safe, DVD player, tub retractable clothes line, small sleeper sofa and balcony with ocean view (fabulous view). More than enough to keep us comfortable. Service was impeccable; most everyone is with a smile either greeting you or asking if you need help. Each morning, guests receive the Iwa - daily paper of activities at the hotel. The main attraction is the pool. Because the property is undergoing construction now, there are 2 main swimming areas open; lazy river and kiddies pool as well as other water options such as the slides, reef activity, 3 jacuzzi/whirlpool, and kiddie water play area. We also participated in a "Waikolohe" self guided scavenger hunt - that was very interesting - something targeted for teens but adults will find it of interest. We also participated in the fire pit storytelling and morning stretch. We took photos with Disney characters and you receive a photo card to purchase photos taken of you during your stay. Checkout is 11:00 am; however, if you want to continue to use the hotel activities throughout the day, you may while leaving your belongings in the lounge (with lockers and showers). Lastly, if you plan to spend the day poolside, finding a vacant seat after 9:00 am is near impossible on the weekend (pool opens at 8:00).
We had their Makahiki dinner buffet ($43/person); diverse options for all palates except overpriced. Needless to say, we ate off site for the remainder of our stay. Parking is $35/day; the only other options for parking is don't bring a car. If you plan to use the Lounge after checkout, lockers fill quickly but if none available, you can always leave your luggage with the bellman.

Room Tip: Ewa Tower or Waianae Tower are good - less of a walk if you request for a room near the elevator. O...

If you are looking for gracious service and top notch food, then aulani is for you. It's not inexpensive but you need too treat your self every now and then. They work really hard to capture the Hawaiian spirit. We really enjoyed our 2 night stay. Try out the AMA AMA restaurant. The view is spectacular!

Room Tip: Ask for a lagoon ocean view room

This is a fantastic hotel on a part of Oahu that is far less crowded than Waikiki. Other than the standard comments regarding price, if you have kids over three, the price for the stay really includes a lot. Compared to other hotels that up charge you for everything, most activities, including daycare is included.

The grounds are meticulous. The pools and beach are perfect. The activities for all ages are great. The food is okay, but there is value when eating lunch at the pool, eg., four large coconut prawns and fries for 12 bucks. The buffet is overpriced as is Ama Ama, but if you venture into Ko Olina or Kapolei, there are plenty of good and cheaper options. Other than the food, including. cost and selection, this is the perfect hotel.

For a family of four (2 kids under 4), I cannot imagine a better destination, especially if you have a car to explore the island, which is beautiful, even when compared to the other Hawaiian islands that are considered more scenic.

This was the second time that we stayed at the Aulani Resort. This time there was five of us and the one bedroom villa was able to comfortably fit us all. There is a king size bed in the bedroom, pull out queen sofa sleeper and a pull out twin bed under the tv which was neat. The kitchen is large and fully stocked with pots, pans, rice cooker, microwave, stove, oven and a extra large refrigerator- love the stainless steel appliances. There is a large washer/dryer combo in the closet and it is very quite. The bathroom was great, shower and toilet are divided from the soaking tub which is good if one person uses the bathroom the other person can soak in the whirlpool spa. We had two balconies with two chairs each with awesome views of the mountains and a little ocean view. The grounds are relaxing and so much fun in the water features and the pool, the ocean is so calm that it is good for families. Cannot wait until our next visit.

Room Tip: The one bedroom villa is worth it- extra large with lots of room for five
