“Good to see.”
Reviewed August 5, 2014

It's an interesting place to see and it's history is noteworthy. I'd plan on 30 minutes to park, take a swing around, hit the bell, bop through the gift shop and get back in the car. Unless this is a religious pilgrimage, not much going on. Also, when we were there in July 2014 they were cleaning the reflecting pools and left the fish to flop around in no water until they were ready to head to the big fish temple in the sky. NOT COOL!

As part of our tour, one of the stops was here. It was very beautiful and peaceful. We rang the bell and then visited the temple. Make sure to remove your shoes when entering. Although the temple is a scaled down version of the original it is still a neat building. Great place to take photos.

“Byodo-In Temple”
Reviewed July 28, 2014

It was probably our own fault but we found the temple really disappointing. It took us nearly three hours to get out there on public transport and two hours to get back to Waikiki and to be honest we were expecting something grander the way people were harping on about it.
The entry price is good, $3 per person and the grounds are beautiful, reminiscent of old school Japan perhaps. For a small cost you can purchase fish food - there are literally hundreds of koi in the pond, tortoises, swans and ducks. You can ring the bell (Bon-Sho). In all it will take 10-20 minutes to walk through and take some photos.
We preferred the walk through the Valley of Temples to Byodo-In itself but go see for yourself.

“Beautiful, tranquil place”
Reviewed July 26, 2014

As you turn from a main street with retail stores, it's hard to imagine a place of such beauty and spirituality so close by! The grounds we passed going in are a cemetery, with different styles of grave markers in different areas. We parked and crossed a bridge, and saw the temple.
It's a beautiful, traditional Japanese style building, with a famous buddha statue. On the grounds are a temple bell that anyone may ring, a few side areas of interest, and a gift shop.
There is a pond full of fancy carp. At the time the main moat area was being cleaned and the fish were in a side pond. There were some black swans, and the usual wild birds. Signs warned of wild peacocks, but we did not see any of those.
When touring an area, every so often you need a site that is relaxing and restful. This is that site!

“Peaceful and Happy”
Reviewed July 23, 2014

I know friends in Hawaii who have never been here. When I lived here it was one of my favorite places and I never go home without visiting there. The temple and the grounds are beautiful. There's a cool black swan in the lake. If you have kids, go in to the gift shop and buy some fish food so they can feed the fish. It's really quite a spectacle when they are all competing for the food and very fun for the kids (even bigger kids). It did not used to cost anything to get into the cemetery that you go through to get to the temple, but now you do. It wasn't very much and certainly not much for how great this place is.
