Owner description: Kayak on beautiful Kane'ohe Bay located on the windward coast of Oahu. Kane'ohe Bay is home to Oahu's only barrier reef. Enjoy a guided eco-tour with Kama'aina Kids' friendly staff of certified instructors. Experience the magnificence of Kaneohe Bay's pristine waters and diverse sea life with the Bay's one and only kayak eco-tour. The three hour tour will journey to Coconut Island, home of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (and where the television show, Gilligan's Island, was filmed). Along the way explore and snorkel at various patch reefs and observe sea turtles, rays, and tropical fish in their natural habitat. Your guide will point out cultural sites, such as the traditional Hawaiian fish pond at He'eia, and will also explain some of the challenges facing the ecosystem of the Bay. The protected waters of the Kaneohe Bay make it a perfect place for kayakers of all skill levels. This hands-on approach makes it a safe and exciting learning experience for all ages.

One of our most favourite things we did during our time on Oahu. Our guide was Kendall, super nice! We were picked up from our hotel in the AM with other guests and driven to our launch site. The cost of the tour goes to pay for the kids who attend camp there in order to learn about preserving the animals and reefs. Everyone gets into a 2 person kayak and gets towed about mile away from Coconut Island. There you are floating right above reefs, clear blue calm waters. You are encouraged to follow with shallow strokes in order to not hurt the reefs. Once there, was our first snorkeling spot.

Following you are towed to a second snorkeling spot where the water is blue and shallow. We saw so many sea creatures, and even a turtle they named Barney because he appears quite often. His markers are the barnacles on his shell. This was an incredible place to snorkel! Absolutely gorgeous! Kendall had snacks and drinks on the pontoon which was very helpful!

Finally you have the option to kayak back or towed back where we had a fantastic BBQ lunch of chicken teriyaki, ribs, rice, salad, pineapples and grilled corn. There is a vegetarian option, which she asks you for at the beginning of the trip.

We didn't know if we could bring our camera or phones, but you can and SHOULD! You can keep it on the pontoon where it is kept dry. Kendall even offered to take pics of you while you are kayaking. Loved every minute! We encourage families to attend - as we were on the trip with a young family and their kids were able to keep up easily!!

Only regret other than not bringing our camera was that the trip was too short! It would be more awesome if this trip could be a full day including all of the traveling to and from the site. This would give more time to kayak and snorkel more in the two spots where we stopped.

The Holokei kayak and Snorkel adventure was a memorable tour for many reasons. First, you are in a small group going to areas where basically you are the only ones there exploring the reefs. The views around you and underwater are breathtaking. Second as other reviewers mentioned, even the inexperienced can enjoy this tour. There is a shallow section that is explored making it easy for non swimmers to explore. Our guides that day, Sarah and Garrett were so helpful and patient, giving us pointers on kayaking techniques and providing hands on explanations on what we saw. Third, we ended our tour with a relaxing barbecue lunch in a sedate area with spectacular views. I must say they don't skimp on quality or quantity as the food was excellent and abundant. This tour, which includes free hotel pickup should seriously be considered by all visitors to Honolulu.

On our memorable trip to Oahu, we chose Holokai for our water adventure. Our guide was Kendall. She did an outstanding job of telling us what we would do, then let us have at it! The beautiful Kaneohe Bay has colorful coral reefs, many, many fish and even a sea turtle. We paddled and snorkeled for 3 hours which seemed like a few minutes. It was everything I was looking for. The staff were all great and the BBQ lunch was super. if/when we get back to Oahu, this tour is a must.

Getting out on the water when you are in Hawaii is a must do, and for those families that do not want to hassle with the crowds and parking at Hanauma Bay, this is a great option.

Kaneohe Bay, where the kayak and snorkeling happen, is a nice semi-protected bay, making it safer and easier than the Kailua kayaking options. Perfect for those with children or inexperienced, because your group will be escorted the whole time by a small boat, giving the tired an opportunity to be towed at any moment.

You will snorkel at two spots, one close to the UH research center, which is very diverse in the coral and marine life. The second snorkel is done in an area well know for the majestic sea turtles. The tour concludes with a nice picnic BBQ lunch in an area which overlooks beautiful Kaneohe Bay and provides breathtaking views of the Koolau mountain range.

What's Green:
All proceeds benefit the Ha'eia Learning Center, which is dedicated to educating youth about Hawaiian history and various means for protecting and preserving Hawaii's unique ecosystem.

Insider Tip:
Does not operate on Sundays or Federal/State Holidays.

Help protect the reef, but using reef safe sunscreens (typically with micronized zinc oxide, or micronized titanium dioxide) or swim shirts.

Our group of family and friends (8 - 4 adults/4 teens/kids) and 4 other people went on the kayaking trip of Kane'ohe Bay and loved it. None of us had any real experience with kayaking, but the staff were great with teaching us the basics. It was a little choppy out the day we went, so they towed us out to "Gilligan's Island" with the pontoon boat. My husband and oldest son decided they wanted to kayak the whole way by themselves, which they did fairly easily and had great instruction as to how to get to the first stop. We had about half an hour to snorkel at the first location before being taken to the second stop for more snorkeling which was different but just as good as the first place. After about another half an hour, our tour group was given the choice to kayak back to our starting point or get towed by the boat. Most chose to kayak back which was great. We were able to shower on the beach for a quick rinse before being taken to the lunch spot. The BBQ was great! Lots of food available (BBQ chicken and ribs, corn on the cob, rice, salad, fresh pineapple and drinks). We liked that the money spent on this tour went back into the non profit Kamaaina Kids which supports kids in their community. All the staff we dealt with were very friendly and informative about the area, ocean and creatures in it. I recommend this for anyone regardless of their abilities. Mahalo for a great morning and lunch!
