The best ahi we had in our 10 days in Oahu! A surprise since we were not expecting such amazing food at an Italian restaurant in Hawaii.

Great lunch spot. Fish tacos and beef bourguignon were delicious. Will return to check this place out in the evening. Looks like they have a great wine selection, but I don't know much about it.

Traditional Italian American style. Prices were very good and portions huge. We both enjoyed our pastas, wine list was good. Service was good. All in all a good value for what we got and wanted.

We went to eat at 5:00 on a Saturday. We walked in and were excited to see many empty tables thinking that we would get in before the rush. But wait, all the empty tables were reserved and we would have to wait 15 to 30 minutes for a table. The hostess seemed clueless when asking her questions about different aspects of the restaurant.

We sat at the bar and ordered a pupu. Two other couples came in and were sat immediately without a reservation, so we went and asked again. The hostess then said she had a table open and sat us.

The food was overpriced and not very good. I had the short ribs- drowned in sauce and a cut of ribs that was highly fatty. My husband had a seafood pasta. Pasta was overdone and the dish was disappointing.

Oh, and when we left, most of the reserved tables were still open. Not a great way to treat guests or kamaaina!

I've eaten at Formaggoi several times and generally found the food quite good. However, last nights "dining in the dark" prefix menu was very disappointing. You don't know, going into it, what you will be eating - which is supposed to be part of the fun. This menu, however, left me hungry and with a bad taste in my mouth with every course. We started with calamari ceviche, fishy tasting and bad texture. Next course was salmon gravlax over some shredded vegetable - another fishy tasting dish with a mushy texture. Third course, mackerel wrapped in prosciutto and noodles then deep fried. Crispy, salty and a nasty fishy taste. I had one bite and was disgusted. Last, was peppered tuna- overlooked and dry. None of these dishes came with any starch to speak of so we asked for bread and apparently got very little because it was gone in a heartbeat. We arrived hungry, anticipating a big gourmet meal. What we were served tasted like something they cleaned out the freezer. Oh, desert was the best part- but not much of it considering we were still hungry. The price with wine pairings was $75 p/p. The wine was OK but all over the map for the menu. Reisling, Pinot, Prosecco, Cabernet. They were 3oz pours and not really enough so we ordered a bottle of savagnon blanc to fill in. It was my husband's birthday, so we took two friends and treated them. For this lousy food, we paid $460 with tip...oh, the blindfold thing was kind of fun but the blindfolds were not as described on their website. They were flimsy and fit too close to the eye. You could not open your eyes under the blindfold as described so it got annoying and uncomfortable. The room was very live, noisy and with no music for ambiance.
