We have stopped over at the Two Duck Inn twice now, once in March 2007 and the last in August 2013 for one week each time. I hope it will not be our last visit as we tend to think of Two Duck Inn as our place in Oahu. Both times we were very comfortable, although this visit we were pleasantly surprised to find that Marty had made some improvements (new aircon, ceiling fan and more cooking appliances).
Two Duck Inn is fantastic value and as such, you cannot expect four star luxury BUT having said that, it is perfect for the two of us and I was sad to leave at the conclusion of our trip.
The accommodation has its own private entrance and a little protected courtyard which gives a greater dimension to the unit which comprises one room with a kitchenette and bathroom. Although not terribly big, Marty has made good use of the space which includes a queen size bed, easy chair, a closet and drawers, TV, dining table with 2 chairs and several portable cooking appliances neatly stowed and easy to get to and use. Again, the kitchenette is small but very functional because of the clever use of space.
Marty and Gail have a delightful pool area which we are invited to use between 9.30pm and 4.30pm. It really is our slice of heaven on a budget.
The neighbourhood is suburban - no highrises - and seems to us to be mainly locals which is what we also love about the place. Within walking distance is the local supermarket complex which also houses the best kept secret - Muddy Waters Cafe. When we were there in 2007, there just happened to be a blues band playing on the balcony which apparently happens whenever they get the urge. Unfortunately this time we were not so lucky but the coffee is still fantastic!
Also within walking distance is Kailua Beach which we love! It is a long beach with, it seems, locals and families at our end and tourists, kite surfing and lots of colour at the other end, again with a market close by for good food, drinks and general food shopping.
All sorts of "toys" are available for guest's use at the beach. We did not avail ourselves of them, although we did use the picnic cooler bag and ice blocks which were also provided. Marty told us of the many local food markets which we went to for wonderful fruit and veg. Marty and Gail are good hosts in that they see that we are comfortable but are not intrusive.
We hired a car both times and it was easy to use Two Ducks as a base when we felt like getting around. As we stop over in Hawaii, we are generally happy to veg out and enjoy what Kailua has to offer. A place to relax before the long haul flight to Australia is important to us. If you are looking for entertainment and the buzz from resort style living, this may not suit you. We didn't feel the need to go into Honolulu at all, although we did visit many of the beaches along the coast including Three Tables being one of many that we loved.
All in all, we have found Two Ducks to be great for us and as mentioned earlier, I am already looking forward to our next visit. Thanks Marty and Gail, see you next time. Betty and Keith from Australia.

I had a wonderful stay at the Two Duck Inn. It is the most reasonably priced place to stay that I could find in Kailua (a lot of other places are overpriced). It's in a very safe area of town and only a 5-10 minute walk from the beach. Marty and Gail provided tips to get to the nearest grocery stores, public beach access point among other things. I didn't think there was too much to do in Kailua, but the beach is very very nice and it's only a short walk to the bus stops which will take you back into Waikiki if that's what you want to do.

When the air conditioner stopped working they went out and had a brand new one installed so that I wouldn't get too hot in the room. Very very nice of them. The owners introduced themselves at the beginning of my stay, but were not intrusive at all afterward.

The walls are pretty thin, and after the pool is reserved for owners use at 5:30, if they have guests over you can hear everyone outside from inside the room. This only happened one night though, and wasn't too big of a deal.

Their pool is very nice as well and open for guest use from 9:30-5:30. The beach is such a close walk though, that I usually went there.

The kitchen was fully stocked and the rice cooker was very useful to make food inside the room. They had shower towels and beach towels, recyclable grocery bags in the closet and plenty of space. A very nice place to stay for a great price.

First of all the location! Five minute stroll to watch the sun come up, 10 minute drive to grab a kayak and hit the ocean. At the end of the afternoon take a refreshing outside shower and a dip in the private pool. The hosts thought of everything! Beach towels, pool chairs, fresh island fruit. We can't wait to go back....no need to look for another rental!

First of all, we LOVED Kailua. Kailua has the best beaches and loads of friendly folks. It's also a nice in-between between urban Honolulu and crowded Waikiki and more local, suburban, rural places up the East and North Shore. Marty and Gail's attached apartment was very comfortable and equipped with everything we didnt even know we needed! Loads of beach stuff (mats, chairs, boogie boards, cooler, etc), everything you'd need in the kitchen to make most meals (even a salad spinner!), comfy bed, ambient lighting, indoor and outdoor shower (by pool), and clean bathroom. They have really set up the room lovingly with many details you wouldn't expect in a rental this size. The pool is truly beautiful - lined with cobalt blue tiles and surrounded by palms and plants; it's long enough to do some laps if you like! The only complaint we had was it does get downright steamy during the day inside the unit - there's no way to comfortably stay indoors in the afternoon without the A/C on as there are only two small windows (one in bathroom) and the front door to allow ventination. Even with A/C on, it doesn't get much cooler than 75 during the day. At night, the A/C can get as chilly as you could possibly want. Since we were out most of the afternoons enjoying the island, this didnt affect us much or change our positive opinion of our stay. We could walk to beautiful Kailua beach in less than five minutes, and almost everyone greets you as they pass! Such a lovely spot - we loved it, and two ducks was a great home base and convenient location.

We stayed at the Two Duck Inn for 3 nights after having been in Maui for 11 nights. It is a studio attached to a main house, accessible via a side entrance. It has a queen bed, ktichenette and bathroom with a very small outside seating area. There are aspects that we enjoyed about the studio but some things we did not enjoy.

it is conveniently located to the beaches of Kalama (nearest), Kailua Beach Park and Lanikai, is near supermarkets/banks and other amenities. The studio is of a good size but there is not much ventillation since the big window cannot be opened and a large patio door also cannot be opened (since it opens onto the backyard and it intrudes into the owner's privacy). There is air conditioning and a ceiling fan however.

The studio is well stocked with all items and that was really great. It does have a cosy feel. We also felt that we had alot of privacy to come and go as we please.

We knew that the pool can only be used from 09:30am to 5:30pm, we did not want to use the pool at all since there are lovely beaches nearby but it would have been nice to be able to take early morning coffee or have a glass of wine in the backyard late in the day. The outdoor area allocated to the studio is very small and not attractive to sit, plus the outdoor furniture was not that clean. So we missed the outdoor aspect of the accomodation which is important in hot climates.

The bathroom was not very big but was well stocked with towels, but it had alot of black around the shower. This was the only thing that I really disliked about the studio and I do understand in hot climates mold/mildew builds up very fast but really there is no excuse not to replace bathroom and kitchen sealants in a place where people are paying to stay.
