Great course, great views, fun holes and quick round. I played two rounds in one day and the replay rate is great

Fees: $150
Location: 770 Auloa Rd, Kailua, HI 96734; 35 minutes from Waikiki
- Excellent service
- Very quiet – no planes, no road noise
- At least on a Monday morning, not busy
- Very unique – you are playing in the jungle. You wouldn't find a course like this in most parts of America
- Well designed
- Accessible for newer players. Back tees would provide a challenge for experts.
- Close to Honolulu
- Reasonable number of sand traps and water features
- Some really pretty holes that really beg (taunt?) you to go for it, then you lose a lot of balls as a result!
- Better maintained than Ko'olau, but a little less “wild” looking as a result. I guess that could be a pro or con.

- No GPS in carts
- If you play in late summer / fall, call ahead to check on conditions of greens. About half were under maintenance when I was there in late October.
VERDICT: One of my three favorite courses in Oahu, and one of the most unique to Hawaii

We booked a tour through our hotel conceirge. I'm not sure of the name of the company but we had a very friendly man pick us up outside of our hotel and on time. He then proceeded to ask if we wanted to hire golf clubs - which we did - my husband was of the opinion that we were supposed to hire them from the golf course but this guy said no he does it. Anyway hubby's clubs were $35 and mine were $50 to hire! - we didn't really question it (should have!) so just paid him. The quality of the clubs were old but ok. When we got to the Golf Club we were then asked by the guy in the pro shop if we wanted to hire clubs!....of course it was too late and we didn't think to ask him how much he charged but by then it was too late!....having said all that we were then set up in our cart and we shown down to practice tees etc.......the whole time we just could not believe the scenery!......it was breathtaking!...the course was pretty good and not boring at all.....apart from the tour guide scam with the clubs (our fault) it was a great experience and we would definitely go again.....next time on our own :).....very worth the visit for keen golfers. Even though my husband and I played golf there were a few couples who went and only the man played and their female partners went along in the cart and they loved it as well.

Service was the best we experienced on the Island golfing - we golfed 3 times (Turtle Bay - worst service, and Ko Olina - good service). But what really stands out is the layout of the course - it was so much fun, fun not meaning easy! But every hole was different with a true jungle setting for the first 9 holes. If I could only do one course while in Oahu this would be it... we've golfed many times around the world and this was an experience that stood out for us. You can tell that they are upgrading the course, so there are some minor repairs still taking place - but if you are here for the golf and not just landscaping - this is the course to play.

Have played most of the courses in Hawaii and certainly Oahu and would rate this course very close in difficulty to Ko'Olau Golf Club. Both are in the central west area of Oahu and share the same picturesque views of the high, forested peaks with lots of jungle forrest.
The Royal Hawaiian Golf Club is a real test of both length, especially off the back tees, and accuracy off all the tees. To make the game suitable for all levels there are 4 to 5 tee positions on all holes so you can pick the tee box to suit how much "challenge" you want on the day.
The fairways are lush, look quite wide but due to undulations in the topography, the landing areas can be quite narrow, so beware and think about line and length before pulling out the Big Dog off the tee.
The rough, although not overly long is punitive, the ball settles quickly and can be very difficult, if not impossible to find; so landing and staying on the "short grass" is highly recommended.
There is good practice facilities and be sure to hit some balls before playing.
There is a Halfway House but food and drink facilities are very limited and there is no Drinks Cart on the course so take your own.
We booked with Aloha Golf Tours, www.golftoursoahu.com who did a great job in arranging transport and some useful briefing - most important take lots of balls. They rate the course as an 8 lost ball course and they are pretty right because of the comments above. The cost including transport to and from the course from Waikiki was US$150 per person for golfers.
To give you some ideas of how spectacular the scenery around the course is - the course was the location for Jurassic Park 2 & 3 so take a camera and you won't be disappointed. It is visually spectacular enough to keep a non-playing partner entertained just enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
During the working week the course isn't too busy so a good pace of play can be maintained as long as you stay on the fairways.
Like all Hawaiian courses the course is aerated (cored and sanding) in November and April each year so check this before booking.
