“Great course”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

Service was the best we experienced on the Island golfing - we golfed 3 times (Turtle Bay - worst service, and Ko Olina - good service). But what really stands out is the layout of the course - it was so much fun, fun not meaning easy! But every hole was different with a true jungle setting for the first 9 holes. If I could only do one course while in Oahu this would be it... we've golfed many times around the world and this was an experience that stood out for us. You can tell that they are upgrading the course, so there are some minor repairs still taking place - but if you are here for the golf and not just landscaping - this is the course to play.

“Great Course, Gorgeous Views - But Hard”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

Have played most of the courses in Hawaii and certainly Oahu and would rate this course very close in difficulty to Ko'Olau Golf Club. Both are in the central west area of Oahu and share the same picturesque views of the high, forested peaks with lots of jungle forrest.
The Royal Hawaiian Golf Club is a real test of both length, especially off the back tees, and accuracy off all the tees. To make the game suitable for all levels there are 4 to 5 tee positions on all holes so you can pick the tee box to suit how much "challenge" you want on the day.
The fairways are lush, look quite wide but due to undulations in the topography, the landing areas can be quite narrow, so beware and think about line and length before pulling out the Big Dog off the tee.
The rough, although not overly long is punitive, the ball settles quickly and can be very difficult, if not impossible to find; so landing and staying on the "short grass" is highly recommended.
There is good practice facilities and be sure to hit some balls before playing.
There is a Halfway House but food and drink facilities are very limited and there is no Drinks Cart on the course so take your own.
We booked with Aloha Golf Tours, www.golftoursoahu.com who did a great job in arranging transport and some useful briefing - most important take lots of balls. They rate the course as an 8 lost ball course and they are pretty right because of the comments above. The cost including transport to and from the course from Waikiki was US$150 per person for golfers.
To give you some ideas of how spectacular the scenery around the course is - the course was the location for Jurassic Park 2 & 3 so take a camera and you won't be disappointed. It is visually spectacular enough to keep a non-playing partner entertained just enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
During the working week the course isn't too busy so a good pace of play can be maintained as long as you stay on the fairways.
Like all Hawaiian courses the course is aerated (cored and sanding) in November and April each year so check this before booking.

“Jurassic Park Golf”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

I couldn't have imagined a better setting for a round of golf than this one. Nestled deep into a rain forest this course alternatively challenges and rewards you with some amazing views and shot making. It certainly isn't for the faint of heart, so bring lots of extra balls as you will lose more than you think.

“Best Course I Played”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

I played here May 13th, 2013 with my brother. After playing Ko`olau Golf Club and Ko Olina Golf Course earlier in the week I'm glad we saved the best for last in Royal Hawaiian. It was an amazing experience. The golf course has some of the most picturesque views in golf. The set of Par-3’s are the best out of any course I’ve played in the last several years. The course conditions were pristine and the staff was extremely friendly. Fairways were smooth and always had a great lie and the greens were receptive and rolled great! It is very challenging for higher handicap golfers but not unmanageable. I play to a 4 handicap and lost two balls. My brother plays at a 20 and lost six balls. I used Hawaiiteetimes.com and booked my round through there for $99.00 a player. If you’re visiting Oahu I strongly recommend spending the time to enjoy this course. You won’t be disappointed.
