Kalama Beach Park is a great spot to park and enjoy Kailua Beach. They have restrooms and showers, plus easy access to the beach from the parking lot. However, it is a small parking lot, so you might want to get there early in the day.

This gorgeous beach is totally bordered by a single family home neighborhood with no hotels. It has beautiful sand, great surf for body or boogie boarding and was never crowded (we were there in March). There is no road noise and a beautiful view of the curved coast. The parking lot filled up but we only had to park on the street once (and just a half block away).

We were staying in Kailua and this beach park was closest to our rental. The beach is very long, and peaceful. There were no crowds at all while we were there, mostly local people walking with their dogs. The beach is sandy and the water was great. There were no lifeguards (that we saw) so keep an eye on your kids if they are in the water. We brought some snacks and spent the day here a couple times. There are bathrooms and showers. There were some surfers in the water, but the waves weren't huge. We preferred this beach over Kailua Beach Park because it was quieter and there is much more space.

Worth the drive from Waikiki over the Pali Highway, you won't be sorry. Well-maintained, very picturesque and clean bathrooms to bot. bordered by a quiet residential upscale neighborhood, regularly patrolled by security-- you'll be safe here. Just a gentle reminder--sharks normally come in closer to Hawaiian beaches to feed around 4:30 pm, so to be on the safe side, plan to come out of the water around that time--this is true for ALL Hawaiian beaches, and is just shark nature. You're in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Don't make yourself a food item for sharks, be aware.

My wife and I just returned from a week in Kailua. This beach is truly serene, beautiful, and picturesque. We did visit Waikiki Beach also, and I don't know why people decide to go there instead of this gem. Waikiki is so packed with tourists who never venture beyond Waikiki and perhaps Honolulu, which is great for the true beach afficionados such as myself, who'd much rather avoid the crowds and have a beach to myself.

The sand is white and soft. The ocean breeze is amazing. Nearby is one of the best spots for kite-surfing and wind-surfing. You can also body-board or surf.

I would recommend walking a couple of hundred feet north or south of the entrance to Kalama beach to find areas where there's hardly anyone else to disturb your solitude. This is one of my favorite beaches in the world for sure--truly a relaxing place.

Kalama Beach (not to be confused with Kailua Beach) has limited parking, probably about 15-20 spaces, so be aware of that. We sometimes had to park off a nearby street and walk a bit, but it's truly worth it.
