“Tokoname..refreshing!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013 via mobile

Being a long time Kailua resident, I decided to try something different just to change it up a bit. We, a party of seven, decided to take advantage of the late night happy hour which we heard so much about. I am glad we did! A wide selection of fresh Japanese food for half the price. And, the same price cut applied to all drinks!! BINGO! To be honest, the food is delicious and well prepared. They serve a number of different items both hot and cold so you have plenty to choose from. I suggest visiting as its sure to be your first of many.

“Very Satisfying...we shall return”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

Second visit for us, Sunday just as they opened at four. Jen, our server, was eager and friendly. The teishoku sets around $ 20 include an edemame sample, pickles, salad, miso soup, shrimp and vegetable tempura, a second small entree selection and rice. Plenty of tasty well-prepared food. Tempura was light and flavorful without a greasiness. Salmon a minute or two too long on the grill. Tonkatstu good although the salt in the sauce was overwhelming.
Server's check-back, "how is everything?" was perfectly timed two bites into the meal.
The joyful surprise was the $5 discount as "early-birds" on each dinner as well as a discount on the beer.
Some additional tips for servers may help: promptly removing finished dishes and beverage bottles could add to the guests' comfort as well as maintaining water glass levels. As the main dishes are being removed the "how was everything?" could be easily followed-up with, "since you enjoyed dinner, you're really be pleased with our desserts!" Raise the check average and raise the tip. For us dessert was not even mentioned.
We will be back.

“Very good sushi”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

The Sushi here was excellent. The ingredients were fresh and the rolls were plump. My house salad was very good too. Prices seemed high, but comparable to the other places we ate at in Kailua.

“Best Japanese Restaurant”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

The food is excellent and the sushi is awesome. While the sushi chefs are not very talkative, the servers are attentive and helpful. Best Japanese restaurant from Hawaii Kai through Kaneohe.

“Good Japanese Faire on the Windward Side”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

I recently used my first Groupon to try Tokoname in Kailua. It's been in Kailua (they have another location in town) for a couple of years and most online reviews are favorable so we decided, "why not"? The sushi sampler was very fresh and the misoyaki butterfish very flaky. The tempura assortment was also very good. However, the prices are on the higher side - the sushi sampler, 2 teishoku meals, a beer and a saketini ran just South of $100 with tax and tip.
