Owner description: Paddle through Kawela Bay in an area that in ancient times was reserved for the Ali'i or hawaiian royalty. View beautiful coral reefs, tropical fish, and WWII wreckage just 3 feet below the Peekaboo™ window on your kayak. Stop at a honu "cleaning station" and watch as some of our green sea turtles get cleaned. For adventure seekers you have the option to surf your kayaks on small 1' waves or try out the sport your guides invented: Stand Up Kayaking! Explore the secluded Kawela Beach and hike through the jungle tunnel to explore the WWII bunker at Protection Point. Swim in the calm waters of the bay or bird watch for endangered species on one of the many hiking trails through the forest. Relax and enjoy the local refreshments provided for you by your guide. Your keiki will help you search for the buried treasure with the map they find on the trip. Along the shore you can see lava tubes, small sea caves and blowholes. While kayaking, watch out for the two dozen resident sea turtles the Turtle Bay is named after. Visit the "Lost" Banyan Tree where the hit TV show Lost, Pirates of the Caribbean IV and Hunger Games 2 were filmed. Optionally you can decide to stay longer at Kawela Bay and your guide can provide you with a walking map of the 2 mile trail back to Turtle Bay Resort.

My wife and 3 teenage daughters and I truly enjoyed our time in the Kayaks with Will and John.
We had a blast checking out the turtles and learning about the bay.
My family really enjoyed heading out to the waves and riding them in.
The crew were really professional and extremely helpful.
Thanks guys ...great job!

Great time in and out of the water! They bring fresh pineapple and drinks during your trip! John was our guide and was informative about the island and history. It rained at the beginning of our tour, but your going to get went anyway so it made it that much better!

Picked up by van at the Adventure Centre at Turtle Bay Resort for 5 min drive to Kawela Bay. Our guides were John and Darren who provided instruction and safety information first. Started tour by paddling around protected Kawela Bay looking at turtles in their natural habitat. Glass bottomed kayaks were good given that turtles sometimes swim right under you. Also provides good view of the coral but weren’t many fish to see. Our guides offered knowledge about local area and turtles while paddling around. We were then assisted off kayaks onto Kawela Beach to stop for a snack - macadamia nuts, granola bars, juice and pineapple slices. Then given the option to walk to WW2 bunker, keep kayaking and look for more turtles, or try kayak surfing. In our group 2 chose kayak surfing which John supervised and the rest chose to look for more turtles with Darren’s help.
This tour was a great experience for beginner kayakers like myself who may be nervous but also offered opportunities for the more adventurous in the second part of the tour. John and Darren made you feel safe and were also helpful and encouraging. I even had a go at stand up kayaking and my partner tried kayak surfing.
A great plus was offering complimentary digital photos emailed after the tour. Most operators charge extra for everything which can leave a bad taste so it is so refreshing to find Shaka Kayaks and this good will gesture.

I had always dreamed of seeing sea turtles first hand in the "wild" so this was a big deal for me and Shaka Kayaks did not disappoint. In fact, our guides John and Darren seemed to have a rapport with these beautiful creatures. I'm so glad we got to experience this AND get pictures! Even if we had not been witness to the turtles, the tour would still have been a success. We were nervous about kayaking for the first time but John and Darren were patient, helpful and encouraging. They had a lot of knowledge about the island and we enjoyed the walk to the point while hearing about it's history. I loved the garlic macadamia nuts - yum! We had a fantastic time and look forward to visiting again next year.

Excellent tour, just a 5 minute drive away from the turtle bay resort. The guides Sian and John were awesome, lots of stories and facts to tell and you could tell they were very passionate about what they do. First was a kayak around the bay looking for turtles, I saw several including the one that swam under my kayak! Then it was drink and snack time. Then there was a choice of activity. Either a nature walk or kayak surfing, the kayak surfing was epic. I caught a few big waves, but fell off a few more. Then the group rejoined and kayaked back to the starting point. Really impressed, highly recommend!
