Staying in Waialua for a month, we checked out a number of eating establishments in Haleiwa but keep going back to Luibueno's. The owner, Luis, and his wait staff, especially Alex and Aimee, welcome us as friends not just customers.
The menu is a creative take on things Mexican, some recipes reflecting those of Luis' grandmother and all made from scratch. Crispy churros to be dipped in hot chocolate are the "milk and cookies" Luis remembers having as a kid.
Happy hour from 3 - 6 pm offers "street tacos" at $3 each. We tried a few and the battered fish taco was the real winner. It went really well with the full-strength margaritas slushily piled in a large glass.
We don't have huge appetites so each time we go we try different appys and have never been disappointed. The camarones a la plancha was a hit one night. Five large shrimp succulently plated with lots of garlic that was cooked to its sweet best.
We keep trying other restaurants, some of them good and others not so much. But we keep going back to Luibueno's. Can't help ourselves...
