On our second visit to the North Shore, we knew Saturday would bring Ray's Chicken outside of the Malama market. I think he only comes in on Saturdays to this location, but it was a definite must for our return trip last week. Tasty huli hull chicken, 10.00 per bird, grilled on the rotisserie on these giant drums...it's the best deal for food on the North Shore outside of spam musubi at the 7-11. ;) Second time having it and our memories were confirmed -- it's worth returning for.

I stopped by this little outdoor stand near Malama Market in Haleiwa. I've seen people in line here, the chickens cooking on a long outdoor grill and the smell as you walk by is tantalizing.

I bough a whole chicken $9.99 which was cut up into chunks and took a spot at the outdoor table with others. We chatted and I ate. I was absolutely scrumptious. We kept talking and I kept eating and I ate the whole chicken.......I'm going back for more tomorrow.

I've only ever seen a chicken grill like this and it was in the "locals" section of Playa del Carmen, same type of operation, lot of chickens, turning on spits and lots of happy people chowing down.

Take it home if you like, there are a few flies if you are the only one eating, but I just swooshed them away.

Ray's has become a regular stop for us on Oahu North Shore. Try it and you will become addicted to it. The only thing I have had that comes close to this was on Terceira Island Azores. It is a no-frills huli-huli chicken stand set up in a parking lot in the middle of Haleiwa but the flavor is incredible and the price can't be beat. We always eat one chicken there and take two more back to the hotel for snacks or making sandwiches with hawaiian sweet rolls. Whenever we schedule a trip to Oahu it is one of the first things that comes up on the list of things we can't wait to experience...again.
