This beach is on the north shore of Oahu. If you get tired of the crowded beaches at Waikiki, and you will, go to this beach on the north shore and relax. In the winter the waves are too big, unless you are a serious surfer. In the summer it is a perfect place to people watch, sun bathe, and swim. Not a great snorkel spot.

We rented a house just around the corner from here and shared a each with the overflow crowds.. Amazing gorgeous views. Whales and dolphin watching every afternoon. Even had some turtles and monk seals visit ( and some very rapid response wildlife docents.) go early, it does get crowded. And be safe. We all know about the 30 foot sand pounders in winter, but that current at the shore is one of the strongest I've felt, even in April.

This beach was beautiful with light blue, clear water. It wasn't overly crowded and had a huge beach area to picnic, lay-out, etc. The only thing I didn't like about this beach was that the bathrooms, outdoor showers for rinsing off sand, and parking lot were across a very busy street where drivers definitely don't give pedestrians any type of right-of way. Otherwise, this was a perfect beach experience!

We caught an amazing sunset at Sunset Beach Park in the 3rd week of May 2013. We arrived about 90 minutes before sunset and had a good shaved ice treat from a truck based vendor parked at the park. We did not have trouble parking at the time we went.

After finishing the shaved ice we wandered a ways down on the breach and sat down on a towel to wait on the sun to set. The beach actually had a small amount of traffic on the night we went. I guess it was luck. The surf was high and rough but plenty of locals were catching some waves as our entertainment. A few of them chatted with us before tackling the waves. It was interesting to hear some of the stories from them.

Then, my wife noticed something a little further down the beach where a small crowd had formed which turned out to be a single Hawaiian monk seal resting just above the surf in the sand! Wow, what excitement as we slowly approached to take some pictures. Unfortunately, the viewing was marred by 5-6 visibly intoxicated young men who decided it would be a good idea to charge the seal. These guys actually had glass beer bottles in each hand. One to drink and spare I guess.

What a mistake that decision turned out to be. Rights as I was about to intervene, a woman who was there protecting a perimeter around the seal forcefully and verbally protected ran the morons off before contact was made with the seal. I do not understand why people feel the need to obtain some liquid courage and then harass other people and/or creatures on the beach.

Right before the sun went down, the seal made its way into the sea. Overall, this is a great place to catch a sunset. We even witnessed a proposal on the beach as well. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice evening on the beach. Hopefully you get lucky and see a seal too!

This is a VERY popular beach at sunset, so grab yourself some takeaway food and arrive early so you can secure a parking space and a spot on the beach. It will be worth it! You can have a picnic on the beach and then enjoy a beverage and/or dessert while you watch the sunset. So beautiful. A lovely way to end a day on Oahu!
