“Do not miss Brutus and the other turtles”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2013

He and other turtles are often on the beach guarded by volunteers . Over 20 stay in this area and frequently come ashore. There were 3 turtles on the beach last Monday during our visit and many more swimming and sunning when I visited last May. Nice beach but I don't recall any restrooms. Be careful crossing the road from the parking area.

“Turtles, turtles”

The beach is great to see the turtles. Also, the sunset view is great with amazing light! Beautiful sight of the surfers as well.

“This made my kids' vacation!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

The one thing my youngest wanted to see was the turtles. We went to Hanauma Bay to snorkel, knowing there would be a 'chance' of seeing a turtle (along with the other fish)....but no luck.
Since we were planning on visiting Halei'wa, we stopped at Laniakea Beach...and we were not dissapointed.

We arrived and saw 4 turtles on the beach, with a couple of others out in the water. All 3 of my kids loved that they could be in the water (within 6ft) of the turtles. The conservationists are very mindful of the 6 ft rule, so please respect the 'rules'.

The parking was a bit difficult, but we managed and parked right in the dirt area along the road. But it was advised--and I read through other reviews--do not leave valuables in your car. (which should be common sense)...but apparentlly this is somewhat of a 'haven' for theft. The beach is not marked, but you will know you are there, once you are at a stand still in traffic, a few miles out of town.

Knowing we were going, we took only what we needed in a backpack, and just took it with us.

Great for kids, great for adults! Highly recommend--and it's free entertainment.

“Intermediate Surf Break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

I surfed here a few times & had some awesome overhead waves. Even though there are a lot of surfers it's easy to get waves & the paddle out is no trouble. Before you jump in be-careful because there are a lot of sea turtles hanging around the shallows, if your lucky they will follow you out for a surf!

“Turtletastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

This beach is not easy to find if you're not sure where you're going. None of the tourist brochures seem to point it out. Basically, you have to head east from the old town of Halweia for a couple of miles. The beach is the first one you come to - look for all the cars parked in the layby! I couldn't actually see any signs saying the name of the beach.
The turtles seemed to be to the very far right of the beach. Lots of them swimming in the water, and one out on the beach when we visited. There are volunteers there to protect the turtles. They cordon the area off around the turtles when they come onto the beach, but you can still get close enough to take photographs. The volunteers had lots of great info re the turtles too - we spent quite a while chatting to them.
