“Peaceful Island”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

The Ke Nani Kai is an older property, beautifully maintained. It is on the western end of Molokai, so restaurants, grocery stores, and most shops are a long drive away. The resort itself has a beautiful pool, and we were frequently the only people using it. Our unit, 130, had hardwood floors, a nice, shaded lanai, dishwasher, and washer and dryer included with the full kitchen. Any request was immediately met, and service staff are friendly and helpful. The island itself is mainly designed for relaxing as visiting the old leper colony and hiking are the primary activities.

Room Tip: The second story of some units have sea views. The surrounding golf course has been abandoned so doe...

We traded for this timeshare and were not disappointed. The unit was nicely kept up, but a little older. The whole complex was very quiet during out visit, as many of the units seem to be occupied by their owners during the winter months. We had a 2 bedroom/2 bath unit with a nice lanai on the ground floor. The landscaping in the complex was very nice and well kept up. It came well equiped with beach chairs, cooler and beach towels. The complex is on the western (dry) side of the island, so the beaches are excellent and the weather good. However, it is very dry, so the surrounding land is covered in brown, scrubby vegatation - no lush green on this side of the island. The complex is part of a larger development that is partially closed down with many closed buildings and an overgrown golf course, so it is rather depressing in those areas. It still has a great ocean path and beach with beautiful sunsets over the island of Oahu. The grocery stores and restaurants (the few there are) are about a 20 minute car ride away. This didn't bother us any, but a car is essential.

The people we met on the island were nice enough to us, but it is obvious that they are not really interested in the tourist industry and would be just as happy if no tourists came to Molokai. They seem to be very afraid that Molokai could turn into another Maui, and are doing everything they can to keep that from happening. They were able to shut down the Molokai Ranch operation and have many signs posted on their properties indicating that they want Molokai to stay as it is. So there are very few tourist related activities and restaurants.

So while we thoroughly enjoyed our week on Molokai and at Ke Nani Kai - be prepared for a low-key, beach centered vacation. There are many beaches we visited where we had the beach to ourselves!

Stayed for a week in 2 bd 2 ba unit. Well equipped, comfortable unit in a nicely maintained 30-year-old complex. You can walk to a couple of sandy beaches (very limited shade, and too windy for umbrellas), and drive to a few others that are within 15 minutes. Only 2 grocery stores (with fairly limited selections) on the island, both approx. 30 minutes away in Kaunakakai (not open in the evening, and only 1 is open on Sunday until noon) so plan ahead on your food, and bring your own grocery bags. There's a couple of fast food type restaurants in Kaunakakai as well - and that's it! The area around the condo used to be a nice golf course and resort until the last owner pulled-out in 2008 due to local opposition to development. The golf course is slowly being reclaimed by nature, and much of the Kaluakoi resort area is boarded-up and falling into disrepair.

To call Molokai the "Friendly Isle" is a mis-nomer. Locals are very friendly amongst themselves, but there's no friendliness or helpfulness towards visitors. If you want to do nothing beyond relaxing in total peace and quiet, then Molokai is for you. If you are expecting the "normal" Hawaiian island experience, go to Oahu, Maui, Kauai, or the big island instead.

This condo has all the amenities of home including filtered water, large tub, two bathrooms and bedrooms and a fully stocked kitchen. We were there in early July and the winds were very, very strong so that took away from the experience for us. Besides that the view from the condo at any time of day is unreal. We ate dinner on the patio every night and enjoyed the peace and quiet. The room had beach chairs, a body board and ice chest. Perfect for the nearby beaches. Stock up on food in town before you get here as the amenities are bare bones on this side of the island. We bought ice every morning for the beach at the small store to the right as you pull out of the complex. The pool is great and was never crowded or loud. I ordered Omaha Steaks for the trip which worked out perfect. Meat seemed to be hard to find when we were here in 2011. Ceiling fans throughout the condo and it was remodeled and has a very new feeling to it. Beds were comfy and I only had a problem sleeping because it was so quiet!! (not a bad thing!!) The power was out when we got there (not the condo owners fault!!!) and the kind lady who manages the property came over in 20 minutes to help us out. Don't stay anywhere else in this complex!! This is the place to be.

I am writing this while still in our gorgeous 2BR, 2B condo at Ke Nani Kai. We are leaving tomorrow morning, and sad that we have to go. It's not as if we're going home to the mainland, but to Kauai. Still, if it weren't for our daughter, who lives on Kauai, expecting us, we'd perhaps some how find a way to stay here.
We've driven around the island, and seen most of the places where one could stay for vacation. We think that we were lucky enough to chose the best.
There is something for everyone staying here. Gorgeous views, a sparkling pool and hot tub, ping pong tables, tennis courts, and of course an array of drop-dead gorgeous beaches within walking distance. The beaches provided a place to walk, run, fish, and hunt for shells. Oh, and of course, also watch the sun set.
We saw some of the most vividly colored rainbows ever right from our well-appointed condo too. There is a small variety store right on the property, but otherwise, grocery shopping and gas stations are about 20 miles away. Did we mind that? Absolutely not. The drive is just beautiful.
Nature lovers will love this part of the island. There is a multitude of deer and wild turkeys that we spotted almost every time we were out and about exploring.
Do we love Ke Nani Kai? Yes we do. We also have quickly fallen in love with Molokai. One last word. This is likely not the island to visit if you expect an active nightlife, or to be entertained with touristy type things to do. This is for those who love to relax, and make their own quiet kind of fun in an absolutely gorgeous place.

Room Tip: I'd opt for an upper level condo, as the ceilings are vaulted, making it seem much larger than t...

We traded a week of timeshare here and stayed in unit 104.
The unit was typical of any timeshare. Do your own dishes. Take your own garbage out. Wash your own towels. No maid clean up during your stay. All standard policy.
The unit however, wasn't poorly decorated and it was a nice place. It had beach chairs and coolers in the closet, washer and dryer with laundry soap, BUT.... there was spilled wax on the floor in the living room that didn't get cleaned, cupboards and shower shelfs were at and angle so things fell off. Things seemed to be missing in the kitchen area, couldn't find lids to things, odd numbers of dishes, ect. There was a terrible ant problem before we even got there and we tried to keep everything as clean as possible in the kitchen and bathroom. Then kitchen had not been cleaned properly prior to our arrival though. The microwave had a bowl of cooked rice left in it, most of the dishes in the cupboard we had to wash before we could use them and the stove knobs had grease and food all over them from whoever used it last.
The people above us live there and they stomped around all day and all night. They walk so heavy that they made the light fixtures rattle.
The pool is ice cold because it isn't heated. The only thing people used was the hot tub.
There is 1 BBQ for use in the pool area. The are other ones that you can walk to if you can find them.
Parking was never an issue.
There are frogs everywhere at night - kind of neat.
There are fruit trees of all sorts through out the property, bananas, either papayas or mangos or both and lime trees. Depending on who you talk to, some people say take what you want others say it is their tree so stay away....who knows. We took what we wanted if it was on the ground. The lime trees are a free for all from what I gather though.
It is super windy all the time.
The beaches are pretty, even though you can't see them from the rooms. They are close enough to walk to. You can't really swim in them or sit on the beach because of how windy it is.
You are a ways a way from town of Kaunakakai. About 30 minutes.
Maunaloa is still 20 minutes away and there is not much there. Post office, kite shop and little general store.
There was a little little store on the property, kind of. If you walk towards the pool for the other property kind of through the abandoned buildings, there is a shop with the basics and some gift kind of things.
The property around is all run down, vacant buildings, old golf course. Lots of potential. It's a shame it's not used for such stupid reasons. It was fun to walk the old golf cart paths and hike around to try to imagine playing golf here with such good views, although with the wind I'm really not sure how you would play.
All in all, I don't know that I would stay here again. I don't regret the one time, but one time was enough for us.
