Castle Molokai Shores Resort
Reviewed April 13, 2011

As many other things go, there's very limited accommodations in Molokai so it is important to consider your options before booking your stay there. We're very happy that we booked directly with Chaya for their unit - A215 - in Molokai Shores and feel as if we've stumbled upon a small secret.

For reference, Molokai Shores is largely a residential condo with some units that are managed for rental by the on-site management. As I understand, these units are largely privately owned and can be hit or miss based on age, furnishings, appliances, and upkeep. I don't have any specific experience with other units but that's the impression I get from other readers' comments. Shared facilities are generally nice (not resort quality, mind you, but more like a 25-30 year old condo complex quality.) the pool is nice and the small beach is lovely.
The other units in the complex are owned and resided in full time by a mix of locals and retired folks - it's kind of charming and everyone seems to mix together well. Every evening seemed to have a small gathering of folks on the beach for sunset.

Now as far as the unit itself goes, it would be tough to beat - it is not managed by Molokai Shores but directly through the owner so you won't get it if you book through MS. Very new fixtures, appliances, furniture, a very cozy bed with tons of amenities especially all the nice bath supplies. Towels and sheets are very new and great quality - you might as well be staying at the Sheraton across the channel. The kitchen is full of top notch diningware, glassware, cookware, accessories, and even the flatware are a complete matching set! The owners truly care about sharing a great experience with you on Molokai and it really shows in the details. Unlike other rentals, there's a good chance that a few non-perishables (rice, sugar, tea bags, etc.) left by a previous renter will be left stored in the kitchen refrigerator for you - a very thoughtful plus since the grocery stores in Kaunakakai close at 8:00 and it's easy to forget some essentials. Just put all food stuff away though - like everywhere else in Hawaii, critters can get attracted to smells regardless of what floor you're on so keep it clean and everyone's happy. Not to mention that this place is pretty close to spotless to begin with.

Lot's of great entertainment options in the unit - although to be honest, we hardly used them at all. Beach supplies, towels, cooler bag, floats, boogie boards, are all provided as well as a couple of golf putters should you want to practice on the putting green in the middle of the Molokai Shores grounds. View directly from the Lanai over the grounds and out to the sea - it's beautiful here. Staying at A215 was a tremendous deal, and we would look forward to doing so again.

A couple of issues to note - these aren't gripes but just fyi since you should not expect this place to be like a resort. There's no A/C - I can't imagine very many places on Molokai having a/c to be honest though. It seems to be a tremendous luxury, but there are overhead and portable fans throughout the place to help. There is an internet connection, but as of this writing it is directly wired so expect to plug in your laptop (or at least use the nice one that they provide). But don't expect to go wireless with your smartphone, iPad or anything like that just yet. There are a few other units in the building that did have open wireless that I could jump onto but not consistently. Also, the sofa is very nice but the sofabed is way too soft to be useful for most anyone to sleep on so I would not recommend expecting to use it in that way. As long as you're aware of those issues, you'll have a fantastic stay on Molokai if you book this unit.

we stayed several days in a203. It was certainly clean and well furnished, and had a good ocean view. But not surprisingly it seemed like someone's old home. The oven didn't work and the toaster only toasted one side and the noise from the bathroom fan would wake the dead. No big deal. Nice to look at the ocean, but that's all you can do. I wanted to go out to the reef to snorkel, because it looks so appealing from the air. But one inch off the beach the muck starts, making wading unappealing and swimming out of the question. There were lots of kayaks on the property, all locked up. Would have been nice to be able to get in the water. Several free wifi links to borrow, thanks to the neighbors. Over a weekend we were surprised to find that it was possible to dine only at the Hotel, or else settle for take out or pizza. The island itself was a delight. We encountered perfect weather, so we ran around seeing the island. On the drive east we ran into one-lane (barely) road at mile 20 until the end of the road. Not at all expected, but fortunately we were the only car out there. Looking for supposed snorkeling spots we found large waves and brown water. So for the first time in any visit to any Hawaiian island, I didn't get to swim. The view over Kaluapapa is not to be missed, one of the best views in the world, and only a short stroll from the car. We found Sunday afternoon music for free, as well as free coffee, at the coffee factory. All in all Molokai is a gorgeous little island, but the SHores is over priced. The island deserves better lodging and more restaurants.

We stayed two weeks and loved this condo, unit number A215, great view of the ocean and the whale watching from the deck. Condo is very clean and well equiped. Grounds and pool area are beautiful and well maintained. Quiet place, doesn't feel crowded, even when full. This unit is rented by the owner and we booked directly with Chaya, she was great and very helpful. We also felt that it was well priced for what we received. Would recommend this condo to anyone.

Molokai Shores A215 was the best condo we have ever stayed in. From the welcoming telephone call from Chaya to the use of their computer, and an incredible choice of creams, bubble bath, and lotions in the bathroom. The location was great as it was only about a mile from town. I highly recommend this condo!

Unit A215 owned by Chaya Friedman is the most beautiful and welcoming unit at Marc Shores.I have stayed at other units at this complex but Chaya has completely remodeled her unit and has put alot of TLC to make this condo so relaxing and peaceful.
Check out her Ka Hale Kealoha website. Very accurate information and description of her lovely condo. We were even welcomed with a personal phone call from Chaya and a
fruit basket filled with local home grown exotic fruits. Communication with Chaya is so easy. She responded to all my emails quickly. My reservations/confirmation was completely hassle free. Actually, I enjoyed my correspondence with her and I feel like she's now ohana ! You even get a 10% discount on return stays. We definitely will be staying at Unit A215 on our next trip to Molokai ! Mahalo Chaya, for sharing your beautiful condo with us!

My room was basically dirty. Bugs everywhere, hair in the bathtub, stained and ripped carpet/drapes. No AC. Good view. Overall, probably the worst place I've stayed in a decade.
