“This was a perfect location for a perfect cottage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2014 via mobile

My husband and his sister and her husband and myself spent a week at this cottage. What a pleasant surprise when we walked in the door to see this very nice clean cottage. Loved sleeping at night to the sound of the waves. Our favorite activity was sitting on the deck and watching the whales and seeing Maui and it's lights at night. There were a few gheckos but they were no problem. They mainly hung out in one corner of the deck. My husband and I like to snorkel. It was hard to snorkel in front as it was very shallow for quite a ways out. We bought two bougie boards to help us snorkel, and left them there for more people to enjoy. Leslie Dunbar left us good instructions as how to get there, which was great as it was dark and raining when we arrived.Molokai is a beautiful and peaceful island. It is a great place to just relax. We rented a car from Molokai car rental. Very simple and easy to do.it is nice to have a car so you can tour the island. Dave's ice cream is super yummy in the town. A daily occurrence.Loved looking for shells in front of our place.we had a very nice and peaceful time in a very nice cottage.

Wish we were there now. Had a wonderful time. The cottage is a distance from stores and restaurants but well worth it. Bedroom had a nice view and breeze coming through the windows. Enjoyed our private beach, but really loved the patio view of Maui and Lani. Also spectacular sunrise.

Room Tip: If you are afraid of geckos or spiders, then this is not the place for you.

We stayed a week in Pu'uana Cottage and it exceeded our expectations. The view from the deck over the ocean was exceptional and it was only a few steps down to the water's edge. The waves provided a lovely sound all evening. You enter into a kitchen that is well laid out and well equipped with a living room off from that. There was a bar to sit at in the kitchen for meals, but we mostly ate out on the deck. Large sliding glass doors opened onto a roomy deck with a table and chairs (and lots of view). We slept in the bedroom facing the ocean that had plenty of room and used the second bedroom with two twins as a walk in closet. The bathroom was also adequate. There was no AC, but windows with good cross ventilation and a ceiling fan were just fine. The pictures on their website represent it well (although it's even nice in person). It's about a 20 minute drive down into the town, but along a beautiful stretch of highway, so who cares how long it takes. The groceries were expensive, but we were forewarned and brought basic staples with us. For excursions, I'd definitely recommend the trip to Kalaupapa (the leper colony)-- we did fly in rather than the mules, figured why exhaust yourself on the mules and then not be able to enjoy the tour and the plane ride down was fun. We also went snorkeling and whale watching booked with the fish and dive shop downtown. The only negatives: would have like to have WiFi and there were a lot of ants-- not just at this cottage but everywhere on Molokai apparently.

I was honored to accompany my family for a 2 week stay on Moloka'i back in Augusta of 2008. I am embarrassed I havent written this sooner. We stayed in Pauwalu. I ven never in my life felt more relaxed or at home as I did at the Dunbar Cottages. The people of Moloka'i are kind, generous and fun loving. I am pleased to say that we made some friends during our stay whom we still keep in touch with. If you are looking for quite simple bliss you will find it here!

Our family (myself, husband and two kids aged 7 and 3) stayed at the Pauwalu cottage for 6 nights in February 2010 and we all loved the experience and were very sad to leave. I have so many good things to say about the cottage and Molokai!

This was our first trip to Hawaii and we picked Molokai as a destination because we wanted to experience the beauty and sunshine of Hawaii but didn't want to deal with a tacky tourist experience. Our family's previous favorite family vacations have been to secluded beaches in the Pacific Northwest where we have time to just unwind and enjoy the beauty.

There was a slight mix up when we first arrived (the woman who cleans the cottages thought we were staying at the other cottage up the road) but when I called the owner, she immediately called the woman who cleans the cottages and she met us at the cottage within 10 minutes to finish tidying our place up and give us the keys). The owner then called to check in with us a little later to make sure all had worked out.

The cottage has a bedroom with twin beds which was perfect for the kids and a queen bed in another bedroom for the adults. The kitchen has a counter and stools for eating meals and there is also a deck off the living room with a table for eating meals outside as well as a picnic table down by the beach.

The cottage was perfect for our family of four. The cottage sits directly on a beach with a large but shallow fish pond that is absolutely perfect for young kids to wade and play in. During high tide, the depth of the pond at its deepest parts was deep enough that my husband and I could float in the water and enjoy it too. The kids got up every morning, put on swimsuits and headed directly out to the beach to play in the sand and fish pond. Each night, we gathered firewood and made s'mores or just enjoyed counting the stars (on the clearest nights, we saw more stars than I've seen in my life--really amazing).

We braced ourselves for the lack of places to eat out after reading about Molokai in various guide books but were pleasantly surprised by several good spots to get a decent burger or plate lunch and generally ate one meal out a day. Molokai is not the place to look for gourmet foodie experiences and if you're hoping to find that there, you should definitely be checking out another island. That said, if you're looking for good, reasonably priced comfort food, you're in luck! We enjoyed the food at Mana'e Goodz and Grinds (about 10 minutes from the cottage), Molokai Drive In (in Kaunakakai), and Kualapu'u Cookhouse (as the name would suggest in Kualapuu). I also had an awesome, awesome coffee drink at the Coffees of Hawaii plantation in Kualapuu (make sure to try their Mocha Mama if you love coffee and chocolate--SO good!)

The cottage is about 20 minutes from the main town (Kaunakakai) on Molokai and you can stock up on groceries there at one of two grocery stores there or at a smaller shop about 10 minutes from the cottage (the previously mentioned Mana'e Goodz and Grinds).

We made a few trips into town (make sure to stop in at Kanemitsu's bakery) and checked out the West End and the cool kite store out there (Big Wind Kite Factory) and the beautiful, uncrowded Papohaku Beach (just to sail kites, not a safe place to swim). The rest of our days we spent just lounging on what was essentially our own private beach (we did see the next door neighbors who vacation there from Honolulu going out in their boat from our fish pond but otherwise, the beach was entirely ours!)

I would highly recommend this cottage and Molokai in general for anyone looking for a low key, laid back, relaxing, Hawaiian vacation without crowds and tourist traps. We will definitely be back!

We just returned from a ten day stay at the Pauwalu cottage and will definitely be returning there for our next Hawaii visit. This cottage is great for kids. The beach has very easy (and safe) access and the fish pond enclosure turns the ocean front into a wading pool that is perfect for children (I understand the other Dunbar cottage is not as accommodating for kids in this regard). If you want something a little more adventurous, just drive a mile or two down the road to Murphy Beach or Sandy Beach for excellent snorkeling. Watch out for the crowds though. One Saturday we saw as many as five other people at Murphy Beach (please note the sarcasm).

The layout of the house was perfect for our four-member family. We didn't have the same bug problems as some other reviews have had. However, we read those reviews before our stay and were very fastidious about keeping the place clean and keeping the screen doors shut. While the linens and furniture are somewhat dated, they are very servicable. The beds were a bit soft. The kitchen was very well equiped and was stocked with basic condiments and coffee (I gather from speaking with the housekeeper that this is a hit-or-miss proposition depending on what the prior occupants used). Finally, the Dunbar's themselves were very hospitable and made our stay extremely enjoyable.

As for Molokai itself, please note that this is the anti-resort experience. There are no traffic lights, spotty cell phone coverage, and in general, the entire island is very laid back. The attitude towards tourists is very different from the other islands. While you generally don't have the same level of blatant pandering to tourists, you also don't have some of the pockets of extreme anomosity either. Everyone is very easy going and friendly. If you have younger kids, you will find yourself closed off from some of Molokai's biggest attractions (the leper colony and some of the more strenuous hikes). However, there are many other things to do with the kids.

Our family has spent two years experiencing Hawaii through five star resorts in Oahu and Maui. We have always returned to the state because of the climate and surf but have always been looking for an experience that fit a ltitle better with our relaxed lifestyle. We will definitely be coming back to Molokai and specifically to the Dunbar Pauwalu cottage.
