“Paradise lost?”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

The location is great, on the water (no beach) and near town, but the rooms are a let-down. There is no air-con, but large fans in the cathedral ceiling (we were upstairs) kept the room passable except when the sun shone directly in from the west. Knowing all this, the staff didn't have the sense to open the French windows before we arrived so it was crazy hot for a good few hours. The kitchen is sparse but adequate, just.

The Aqua hotel, known locally as the Molokai Hotel (that is what the signpost reads) is indeed ‘quaint’. The rooms are small. There is no a/c and rooms on the ground floor can be hot. Only the rooms facing the sea have any breeze. A continental breakfast is included (the papaya is excellent).

The staff is very friendly and helpful. There is a full bar with great drinks. There is a pool and a very nice patio on which you can while away the hours looking at Lanai across the channel.
Rooms on the bottom floor can be noisy with guests on the top floor walking around. Suggest you get a room on the top floor. The absence of a/c can be problematic for some. The doors to the rooms do not line up and this results in critters in the rooms. We saw one big bug. There is a night watchman.

There is no restaurant here. But a short drive to town gives several (simple) options. Mostly fast food. One of the best is Elsa’s – a Filipino-Hawaiian restaurant. There are no fancy places – this is Molokai (no development).

You need a rental car here.

Room Tip: You need an upstairs, sea view room. Unless the absence of a/c is not a problem.

This is a very nice, low key place with very friendly staff. The thing that really made it was the room we were in, which was an ocean front room. Well worth the additional cost. The room did not have ac, but didn't need it due to the great breeze through the room and ceiling fan. Although the room was small, it was light, bright, and just so inviting. We loved it.

Room Tip: Spring for the ocean front room

This is a review of the Hotel Molokai, not the restaurant (which burned down, but they are busy replacing it). We absolutely LOVED our stay here!! Everything was perfect, from the location-- right on the water but near town and within an easy drive of all island attractions-- to the very friendly and helpful staff, to our ultra comfortable oceanfront king room with its lanai facing Lanai (no pun intended) and a good A/C to combat the summer mugginess, to the free wi-fi. Every day after our island adventures we looked forward to great drinks at the poolside bar served by Jamie and Tylor. Manager Mike Drew was the best. He serves free drinks to all comers on Mondays from 4-5, and hands out gifts like packets of coffee. On other evenings, he not only remembered what we liked to drink but bought us drinks at random moments. The hotel provides a light breakfast every morning consisting of fruit and rolls/ pastries supplied by the famous bakery in town. There is also delicious lemon- or lime-laced ice water available all day. We received helpful tips from the front desk staff on where to snorkel and everyone was so pleasant and accommodating. Thank you so much Mike, Tylor and everyone for making our stay so memorable. We will positively be back to Hotel Molokai!

Can't say enough good things about the staff and Michael the GM. We got to meet Michael during the GM reception on our first night and that set it up from there. Even though the property is aged, they have done a great job of keeping it clean and making small upgrades to keep it comfortable. We paid extra for an oceanfront room and glad it had air conditioning. Not sure if any of the other rooms have a/c, but we were glad to have it after our mule ride. We only stayed a few nights during our island hopping, but the hotel is in a central location, quick drive to restaurants, and about 10-15 minutes tops to the airport. The pool was never crowded and perfect for an afternoon drink at the bar. Keep in mind that Molokai is very different from the Big Island, Maui, Kauai, and Oahu, so do the research before you plan a trip. Forget the diet and try Kanemitsu's bakery in the evening for some fresh bread filled with butter, cinnamon, and cream cheese. Being cash and an appetite. The Long Johns were good too. The hotel has a neat little gift store worth picking up a few things. You can ask for a flat rate box and they'll ship it home also (we packed a few things in there we bought on the big island too).

This hotel is definitely not a luxurious resort. The rooms have no AC and look straight out of 1975. Food options are very limited and somewhat pricey. However, if you can get past those little details, you'll have a wonderful time here.
My husband and I were supposed to go to Molokai in June, but our flight got delayed hours and hours. We called the hotel and they were amazing! They allowed us to reschedule for a later weekend. Once we actually made it to the hotel we were greeted with the same friendly customer service. We spent the weekend lounging in the hammocks by the pool- it was lovely. The aloha Friday ukulele celebration was wonderful. Make sure to ask to borrow some snorkel gear from the hotel- it's free!
We brought a ton of our own food because I had read that there were limited dining options. I was very glad we did. The hotel offers a light breakfast (muffin and fruit) for free and a grill menu during the day (hot dog- $8). There are a few options in town but they seemed to be closed more often than not. If you have a suite, you always have the option of buying food at the grocery store in town and fixing something yourself. We had a standard room which only had a fridge and microwave. We had lots of crackers and salami, and it was just fine.
Even with these hurdles, I still recommend this place. It is an experience like no other! We are already planning to return sometime this spring. :)

Cute hotel and great location, but the helpful staff made the vacation even better. Fun music and good food (best on Molokai) in Friday night, plus a nice pool. We got the scoop on beaches and restaurants, and I felt like the team working there enjoyed themselves.

Molokai has a totally different vibe than the other islands and you fall into it after a day. Can't wait to go back!!
