“Nice Place”
Reviewed June 14, 2012

My wife and I enjoyed our 2 night stay at the Old Wailuku Inn. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable, with a large bathroom, and lots of reading material on built-in shelves in the room. The bed was comfortable. The rear porch overlooking the yard was a delightful place to sit in the early morning - quiet and peaceful. There were snacks, soft drinks and fruit juices available for guests at no cost during the day. There was adequate off-street parking. Breakfast was delicious, filling and different each morning. Janice visited with us during breakfast and had good advice about places to visit. She was very friendly. If we had a complaint, it would be that there was no-one to greet us when we arrived, nor was an innkeeper there in the early evening to say hello. We have staid in many B&B's, and this was the first time this has occured. However, our room key and house keys were exactly where we were told they would be upon our arrival. We would stay here again.

My wife grew up on Kahului and when we return there are not many excellent choices to stay in the downtown area until we were referred by family members to Old Wailuku Inn. This is our the first B&B we have used and we have been blow away by the convience of the location, the accomodations, and friendly staff. This is an old historic home that has great charm and all the amenties needed for a casual visit to the island of Maui (especially if staying on the downtown area) when visiting family. Unlike the resort areas that are at least 40 minutes away. If you need to visit the central part of the islands this is the place to stay. Very relaxing and the breakfast is delicious. It has old Hawaii charm.

First all of all Janice is a pleasant inn-keeper and the facility has character. Her husband is rarely seen and frankly seems fairly uncomfortable with people, so you can pretty much only count on Janice to reach out and be the more sociable of the two. The room was nice and general accomodations were very good. Parking was tight, but no major issues getting in and out of the inn. I am a breakfast person and this is where they fell short. Janice alternates the menu and on one day I had what was intended to be a french toast breakfast and it was essentially two slices of a hoagie roll with minimal batter--a carb overload. I would also like to see them serve sausages that were more of an english banger or true breakfast sausuge than what seems to be Kabasa or cuts of polish sausage. On another day, she serves a vegetable base paste or cream of wheat texured puree that was served as a base starch under an egg and that was pretty bad and frankly very few people ate this serving. In general, it was common to see large amounts of food on people's plates not finished. In addition, they served a nice fruit dish, but within seconds of receiving this bowl they serve the main course and you felt rushed or hurried to eat the hot meal. The the coffee is mediocre and needed to be stronger. You would think they would serve gormet island coffee, then again, there was nothing gormet about this meal....very underwhelming. The patio area is nice, but it is located on a busy street so noise is prevalent in the early morning and distracts from the peaceful backyard surroundings. The general location is excellent and central to essential travel routes and tourist destinations, but it is on a busy and somewhat noisy street. Finally, I think they would benefit from a customer service perspective to get an internet service / printer that allows people to print boarding passes. All in all, Janice is very nice, the place does have charm, but I am disappointed that it wasn't more of a wow experience as some other readers lead me to believe it would be.

Dear Burnski52
Thank you for taking the time to evaluate your experience with us. We want to apologize for not meeting your expectations. We really missed the boat in orientating you about our offerings.
Our French toast is always made from a whole fresh French sandwich baguette from the Bakery in town which is soaked overnight in its batter and baked crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It is stuffed with a mixture of Passion Fruit, fresh garden mint, Cottage, Ricotta and Sour cream. And served with a Liliko’i, Coconut or Maple Syrups and garnished with crushed Macadamia nuts. Most guests love it but it tends to be a larger portion and often many don’t finish all.
On Saturdays we serve Molokai Sweet Potato & Zuchini Pancake/Croquet (infused with basil and garlic), topped with Poached egg , Marinara Sauce and drizzled with Crème Fraisch. The dish is served with a delicious Scone. It is quite tasty but looks different because the Sweet Potato is a purple variety. This sweet potato is a delicacy in Hawai’i. I guess this my be considered our California Cuisine Breakfast. It is not cream of wheat in any sense.
On Sundays we serve Scrambled Eggs, Cinnamon Roll, Mushroom Forestiere and Maui Linguesa sausage. It is shaped like kielbasa but the spices and flavors are most definitely unique to it and it is a staple of the Hawaiian Breakfast table. We serve our guests foods unique to Hawaii with an American flair preparation.
The Coffee is our house roast Blend of Maui Mocha Beans, ground fresh and brewed just before breakfast. It is a full flavored medium roast so it is not as robust as perhaps a European Dark Roast that you might prefer. We aim to meet the tastes of the general American public so sometimes we miss the mark for those who prefer a dark European style roast. We wish you had told us we would have happily brewed a pot of extra strength for you. And we would have remembered each morning of your stay thereafter.
I am glad you enjoyed the Fresh Maui Grown Strawberries, golden Pineapple, and Papaya that we served. We always get accolades for our morning fruit presentation. Our entire 7 day menu is listed for your perusal in each guest room.
My husband has a very demanding job managing Restaurants and Bars he interacts with hundreds of visitors and employees daily at another hotel 25 miles away six days a week. He is rarely around at the Inn.
It is nice to hear that you found the Inn has character and charm and it’s location is central to essential travel routes and tourist destinations. I am glad you had no problem with our free onsite parking though getting in and out was a little tight.
We are located on a busy street but when we rehabilitated the historic Lufkin house to its new use as the Old Wailuku Inn we insulated thoroughly so one is disturbed in their rooms from street noise. Once you step down from the Lanai into the Walled in Garden the urban sounds disappear and you feel like you are in Eden.
We hope to serve you again in the future.
Mahalo for choosing the Old Wailuku Inn

We stayed here 5 nights moved to Hana and then came back to Old Wailuku! We loved our visit here! The room was large and very clean. The bathroom was excellent and beautifully decorated! Our breakfast was delicious and so much fun to share with other guests what we had done the day before and what we planned to do that day! Our hostess visited with us every day and she had great suggestions for places to eat and things to do. We will definitely stay here again. Great central location for all attractions.

We enjoyed everything about this B&B. Hosts and staff were very friendly and very informative. Janice in particular is very delightful and friendly, to the point that she really wants you to enjoy Maui. The breakfasts are exceptional, and fresh. If you didn't like the menu, you could always order continental or oatmeal. You could sit around the table or patio and visit with the other guests. You were never rushed out of any area. Nights were peaceful and very enjoyable on your own little patio. A parking spot was given to each guest room free, which was very appreciated. It is not in the middle of the Maui hub, which I liked even better. Thanks for a wonder week in February 2012. If we ever visit Maui again, we will be back to this Inn.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor of the main house, which made it easier for me to get around as my knees...

We had a pleasant four night stay at the Inn in February.
The Inn is quite comfortable however I feel a little overrated.
The general gardens and sitting areas are beautiful and having breakfast with other guests is very very enjoyable.
Our room was reasonably clean however it was dusy around the edges and the shower rug did not feel fresh after the previous guests. The little garden leading out from our room (lanai) was unkept with weeds and in need of a general tidy up.
The room was a good size with quite a few collectables in it but not much storage space. You could hear early morning sounds from overhead as I am guessing staff started cooking breakfast.
The breakfasts were interesting and somewhat unusual.
We liked the location for touring the island, parking our car and for the short walk to catch the Maui Bus. It seemed a fairly suburban, not up market, area with not a great many nearby restaurants. There is however a monthly night time street market on a Friday night and a nearby restaurant where locals play music that is a lot of fun.
Our hosts were very helpful although they did forget our early morning breakfast on our last morning that we had ordered the previous day. They quickly russled up something for us.
Overall the Inn is a pleasant place to stay and we certainly loved Maui.

As locals on Oahu, when we travel to Maui as often as we do, we usually stay with family.
On this three night visit for a family wedding and the returning of our fathers ashes to his birthplace, most of the homes were filled with other family members from farther distances, so we gave the Wailuku Inn a shot.

WINNER!

We were greeted upon our arrival and were treated so much like family, it was like staying at Aunties house and we had known Tom and Janet for years.
Even though we were hours early for our room to be ready, we were able to drop off our bags in the “Bird of Paradise Room” and get on with our family business.

Upon our return, our room was set.
CLEAN, nice sheets/linens, comfortable bed, Flat screen T.V., ample closet space and an A.C. that wouldn’t quit.

Every morning was a BEAUTIFUL breakfast which started with a cup of two fresh fruit combination of Strawberries, Blueberries, Banana, Raspberries, Blackcaps etc..
This was followed by crisp Zucchini and Sweet Potato Pancakes with Poached Eggs on Saturday, Scrambled eggs, sautéed mushrooms, and Portuguese Sausage on Sunday and Monday was Waffles topped with fresh bananas in a caramel sauce.
After our lovely breakfast and quaint conversation with the other guests, we would return to our room which had been serviced during our meal (bed made, clean towels etc…) freshen up and head out for the day, well fed and socially adjusted.

The location was central to our required destinations and we were able to revisit many of our regular haunts like the local bakery’s, Mom and Pop Stores, favorite eating establishments and watering holes.

It is without a doubt that we will be seeing Tom and Janice again.
