“Others are much better...”
Reviewed December 25, 2006

We went on the Molokini Snorkelling trip last year with the Pacific Whale Foundation and it was fantastic. They were full when we wanted to go this year and suggested we go on the Pride of Maui. It was not good. Very little info from the staff, not enough seats on the boat, bad snorkelling spot, etc, etc. Just a completly different experience and not a good one. Go with the Pacific Whale Foundation you will love it and do not waste your time or money with these guys.

December, 2006.

“don't waste your money”
Reviewed November 10, 2006

When we arrived in Maui, we received an activities directory. Inside was an advertised price for the Pride of Maui. When I called to make reservations and confirm the price, I was told "that is an old ad". They said the new price was an additional amount and when I arrived they charged us even more! I asked them on the phone where to park they said "anywhere". They had no sign or any indication where their location was outside of being at the harbor. All other charters had signs. We parked completely on the other side of the harbor. The staff was not friendly and it seemed at every moment they were trying to get money from us. They would promote wet suits and then they would say "that will be another 10.00 dollars to use". They were constantly checking their tip box and counting it out in front of us. They would come on the loud speaker and say "if you enjoyed your trip, please tip us". It got pretty old, and by the way. The snorkeling site was terrible. Nothing to be seen. They didn't take us out to molikini. We went to coral reef, where there was a handful of fish to see and that was it. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

“wonderful”
Reviewed April 21, 2006

I recently went on the Deluxe Morning Molokini** & Turtle Town trip. It was such a beautiful day and experience. The crew on the Pride were so nice and helpful. Upon boarding the vessel you are provided with a nice assortment of pastries and fresh fruit and juices. It was great...fresh and easy. Delicious. Once on the Pride the trip is explained to you and the different options are made available....some people don't like this...but please...people have to be told what is available to them. The crew was not pushing it down your throat...they were providing the information needed to make a choice for your trip. The vessel was amazing....it was large and stable and had easy on and off for the snorkelers...hot shower to rinse off with and plenty of crew to help in any way. Molokini was absolutly beautiful...the water was so clear..you could see forever. The sights were beautiful. Turtle town was beautiful as well. Even though there were lots of people on the boat..you had plenty of space in the water to find your own pace and path...you weren't running into each other. Overall I can't recommend the Pride of Maui high enough. I would choose them again in a second. It was one of the highlights of my trip to Maui. Thank you Pride of Maui....you were great!!!

“Great Snorkeling, Relentless upselling”
Reviewed September 27, 2005

We had a great snorkeling trip on the Pride of Maui. We took the Molokini/Turtle Town morning trip and overall had a great time. The boat is a catamaran, so is very stable, though a few people still got a little seasick. The food, especially lunch, was good. Breakfast was straight from Costco though.

We saw lots of cool fish, several turtles and two octopi. That was awesome! The coral reef is beautiful and overall, it was a fantastic experience.

A few problems with the trip kept it from being perfect.

First, the Pride is one of the last boats to leave the harbor (by at least an hour). This doesn't matter for Molokini, which is sheltered, but it delayed the arrival at Turtle Town off of Wailea. As a result the seas were quite rough, the snokeling was difficult and visibility was not as good. More than half of the people on the boat did not even attempt to snorkel at the second site due to the seas. If you are not a good swimmer it would have been dangerous to be in the water. I don't know if leaving an hour earlier would have made any difference, but there would have been less time for the seas to fetch up.

We were subjected to relentless upselling of stuff almost from the moment we hit the boat. Underwater cameras, wetsuit tops, photography and videography services, SNUBA, etc, etc. We hate being sold stuff, and I'm sure it is standard on most boats, but it really bugged us after a while.

One other thing, rent good snorkel gear at Maui Dive Shop or Snorkel Bob's for the trip. The stuff that is provided on the boat is pretty average, especially the snorkel. Getting a wetsuit top is also really smart idea. The water was cooler than I expected and the suit protects you from a dangerous sunburn. PoM charges $10 which is a bit steep, get the package from Snorkel Bob's or Maui Dive Shop that includes a top with long sleeves.

“Don't take the Cocktail Cruise for the cocktails”
Reviewed August 17, 2005

Because of so many negative reviews and feedback here on TA.com, we chose to take a cocktail cruise instead of a dinner cruise. We opted for Pride of Maui because it was a big boat and was the closest to Wailea, where we were staying. We agreed that it might be better to just do a cocktail cruise then go somewhere decent for dinner.
The boat only had less than 50 people for our trip, which was nice, since it wasn't so crowded. We met three couples who were also on our their honeymoon, and in fact got married the same day we did. That was fun.
The appetizers were better than expected, and in fact filled us up to the point where we didn't go out for dinner later. Since it was a light crowd, we even took a second trip through the buffet table. When we docked there was still plenty of food left over.
It started out too windy to go on the upper deck, but luckily the lower deck was enclosed and made it tolerable. But, the musician was hard to take. One guy playing guitar and singing - playing a good variety of tunes, but a little too loud. So for us, it was bear the wind upstairs on the open deck, or stomach the music downstairs out of the wind and next to the bar.
The only real complaint we had was the booze. It was all well, with no call brands, plus Budweiser and Bud Light on draght. There were limited juices, so cocktails were very limited. You couldn't get anything that took more than the basic 4 or 5 liquors (gin, vodka, tequila, bourbon, etc.), and again - all were generic well brands in the one-gallon plastic jugs.
We actually enjoyed the cruise. The captain was informative, then as the sun really hovered on top of the ocean, the boat just idled in place for a few minutes to enjoy the view and take photos.
If you're a lush looking to get bombed - this may not be all it's cracked up to be, especially for $50 a person. But - just for the enjoyment of a cool boat ride with a great sunset, with good but not spectacular food to nibble on, I'd recommend this trip in an instant.
