If you do the full hike and do the more complex trails I'm sure it'd be better, but we saw the Iao Needle in 5 minutes after entereing and the hike along the stream was nice, but ho hum. We visited after 5pm and the sun was setting, and our newborn was winding down ... my guess is had we gone earlier we would have enjoyed jumping in the freshwater areas and diving in deeper. Hence the 4 stars for my 3 star experience.

“The view is spectacular! Shame we didn't bring our swimwear!”

It a pretty easy hike and the view is spectacular! It's not a long hike and the paths are paved. You can swim in a shaded stream with several natural pools. It was a shame we didn't have our swimwear that day. The needle formation was just incredible. A definite must see if you are ever in Maui. Don't forget the bug spray, the mosquitoes are relentless! The fee is only $5 per vehicle, which is very reasonable. You will want to spend at least a couple hours here or all day if you just want to relax in the streams.

“WOW...IAO (pronounced Yeow)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2013 via mobile

Small admittance fee to see one of the most beautiful nature attractions in the United States.

The valley is rich in cultural and spiritual values and was the site of the battle of Kepaniwai where the forces of Kamehameha I conquered the army of Maui in 1790.

This incredible stream-cut "green" valley in West Maui near Wailuku is stunning. It's natural beauty earned it recognition as a National Natural Landmark in 1972. The valley is covered in dense rainforest vegetation turning it into a green "Oz" of softness.

Enjoy a stroll on a 0.6 mile walk which brings you even closer to a viewing area of the Iao Needle which abruptly rises in a 1,200 foot spire of green looking over the valley.

Afterwards take the separate stroll along the small running river where some people like to soak and swim. Beautiful vegetation in the entire valley.

This is truly heaven on earth!

wear comfortable shoes and put in the effort. Hike up to the peak, the view makes it all worthwhile. For your own safety, stay on the path even though you see many people jumping into the water.
