“Glad We Stopped”
Reviewed May 23, 2011

Had read reviews on the Iao Needle and State Park before my recent trip to Maui, and was not planning on making a stop. However, on our last full day on the island, we found ourselves with some time to kill and decided to make the drive up from Kihei (about 30 minutes). Overall, I was surprised at how enjoyable and beautiful the park is, and glad that we paid a visit. Parking is $5, but the park is free to enter...its very worth it. There are paved walking trails and a few areas with stairs that guide you through the park. There is also signage with historical information. It seems as though many visitors miss the UNpaved trails that lead into the forest. You will know it when you see it...you can proceed into the wooded areas for a short, easy hike along the stream (15 minutes each way, if you stop for pictures). In total, spent about an hour at the park. Great stop, nice pictures, and had a good time.

“Ok views”
Reviewed May 23, 2011

When you park at the Iao Valley Park, make sure you have 5 - $1 bills. The machine only takes one dollar bills. You can't put in a $5 bill to pay the $5 parking fee. The parking fee is a joke. The machine shoots out a sticker and you're suppose to place it on your dash. We didn't see anyone doing it. I guess it's on the honor system, since we never saw a park employee.

The views are nice along with a few manmade waterfalls and ponds. I wouldn't consider this a not to be missed activity. My wife and I did this after our helicopter tour, so we weren't that far away. We spent about 45 minutes here which included going up and down a few steps.

“Hike through the jungle!”
Reviewed April 19, 2011

Just got back from Maui on the 15th; Iao Valley State Park was one of our last adventures before leaving. So glad we made the decision to visit.. we spent a few hours wandering through the unpaved trails and lounged on the large boulders farther upstream. It was all great until a rude family nearly knocked our packs out of the way because they just *had* to hang out in the same spot that we were in. Next time we'll sunbathe without our suits! ;o)

“Beware: Parking Lot and Park Not Supervised”
Reviewed April 3, 2011

On the day we visited, several families with young children watched a mother hen and her chicks in the parking lot. A car load of local people drove into the parking lot. They let their dog loose out of the car and the dog proceeded to kill baby chicks in front of the screaming children. The local people were laughing and one took each dead chick baby and threw it around. When I tried to intervene, they became verbally abusive. There was no one in charge at the park to report this incidence to.
Later, as we hiked up the trail, we encountered another group of local people with a black plastic garbage bag. They were cutting off the tops of the ti plants and stuffing them into the bag. Again, no one to report the miscreants to.

“I would put this on your Maui "must do list"”
Reviewed March 22, 2011

Park just before the paid parking lot. It's just a few yards away and you dont have to pay. If you park in the paid lot, use cash. If you pay with a card the machine takes about 5+ minutes to approve your card.
The views here are definitely worth making the trip. You get mountains, valley, and ocean all in one. Hike to the top of the paved trail for the Needle. Hike lower and get off the paved trail to follow the stream with more good views. Just don't get lost!
