Another landmark taken for granted. The aina is going downhill,No pun intended! Each garden is beautifully culturally depicted but the park is so trashed and that is a shame! Visitors and locals alike so do their part in respecting the aina. There is no excuse!

We love going to see the flora and fauna of exotic places - there are many around Maui to see, and they all have something different. One place even had an allspice tree! That was something we had never seen before.

Different nationalities that have help found Hawaii are represented with different garden areas. The Japanese gardens are especially pretty, with monuments, bamboo forest and water features. Some of the places are not very well kept up. A nice place to stop on the way to or from the Iao State Park. There are picnic tables and BBQ's available there. On the Saturday we were there, no picnic tables were available, the park was very busy & crowded.

This park is worth driving through on your way to the Ioa Needle. There are areas depicting gardens from the various nationalities that came together to make up Hawaii as it is today.

We discovered this little 7 1/2 acre park purely by accident. It is located on the road leading into Iao Valley State Park. We stopped under towering trees and admired the heritage gardens honoring the ethnic minorities who helped build Hawaii. The gardens, statues, and miniature building replicas tell a story of the different cultural roots that came from overseas, settled, worked and transformed early Hawaii. Most ethnic minorities worked the sugar cane and pineapple fields. The cultures represented are the Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Hawaiian, Filipino, and New England missionaries.

Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens have covered picnic areas, BBQ grills, level walking paths, port-a-johns, and free parking. The Iao Stream runs through the picnic areas. The park is exposed to the elements and occasionally needs maintenance and minor painting.

This is a worthwhile stop to appreciate and thank the people who came and settled Hawaii. The diversity and acceptance of the different cultures makes Hawaii what it is today.
