We rode this with a large group of friends and here are a few things that were good and bad:
1. The time was scheduled for 4:00 AM which was INSANELY early for us, but I was able to convince the group it would be worth it. The tour ended up changing the time the night before to 5:15 which was welcome. When we arrived at the ‘top’ of the mountain, we were perplexed why we needed to be there so early as we sat in the van for over an hour in the rain with no sunrise in site (even without the heavy clouds the sunrise would not have happened at that hour)
2. After waiting for an hour, we finally did ride down, in heavy rain for the entire time. I was very skeptical that they were in no way going to call off the tour due to rainfall and I was right. That being said, other than rain hitting us in the face and getting soaked through our poncho’s we did have a very fun ride in all downhill through beautiful terrain (on a paved road). The bikes are adult BMX style and were great.
3. You cannot go to the top of the volcano for this ride. Although Haleakela is a 10,000 foot volcano, you only are taken to maybe the 7000 foot mark and ride from that point down. This was misunderstood by me when we booked the tour as we thought we would be taken to see the crater and leave from the top.
4. The guide and his helper driving the van were great and VERY helpful and cautious with the riders. They were kind and patient with us all. I would like to ride this another time on my own terms so I can ride faster and not have to stop for the group, but this was a great way to go and I felt safe the whole time. The van stays with you on the way down and keeps you safe from traffic as well as gives you the option to get into the van if you are not comfortable.
