“Great way to see Maui!!”

Maui Mountain Cruisers

Just returned from a day with Maui Mountain Cruisers. We did the midday tour rather than the sunrise tour. Fabulous day for cyclists! Great way to view the Maui landscape. Day was well organised and well equipped. Even if your partner is not a cyclist the van trip itself was fun. Our tour guides Dan and Brian were well experienced, informative and fun! Thoroughly recommend this trip. But make sure you confirm with their office your pick up time the day before to avoid a mixup in pick up times and disappointment.

Our experience started with a huge speed bump. There were four people from our hotel getting picked up in the lobby at 3:15 AM for the sunrise tour. We waited from 3AM-3:45 with no sign of outside life. We called (on a Canadian cell phones with no US plan) and found out the driver had come at 2:45 and therefor we missed our transportation. (Our concierge had printed the voucher we paid for, with the pickup time highlighted at 3:15). They made arrangements to meet us in a parking lot in Kahului for 4:30 which meant us driving off into the moonlight in a rental car and missing out on the cycling orientation, signing waivers, safety briefing etc. Thankfully they met us in the parking lot and we were able to squeeze the 4 of us in the overstuffed 15 passenger van and started making our way up the volcano. Things improved for us from there, as the day was going to be clear and we were going to have good visibility of the crater or "erosional depression" as they call it. Watched a beautiful albeit cold sunrise 33F and then piled back in the van to drive to the spot where we began our cycling descent. Our guide and driver began our journey trying to shake off the rocky start (we weren't the only ones affected by the incorrect pick up time), with establishment of aloha. Good plan. We bonded as a group of 12 cyclists ( there were 3 van riders) and had the most spectacular ride from mountain view to a great beach on the shore of Paia with amazing surf. The ride was fast and safe for everyone, age range of riders in our group was 17- 52yrs. We had a breakfast stop halfway down the mountain at a family run restaurant that served delicious food. Julio and Dan made the experience great. We were so grateful that we were able to salvage the activity as it was our last full day on Maui and it would have been a shame to miss out. It is a must do for couples or families with teenagers. I'm not sure our 12 year old would have been able to keep up with the group in the sunrise tour. The tour later in the morning might be more suitable for younger riders.

we couldnt wait to take our kids up to Haleakela to see the sunrise and ride down the crater on Bikes. Mark and Maui Mountain Cruisers made it an unforgettably bad experience. First off he terrrified my 16 year old into not riding the bike but staying in the van for the tour. Then he proceeded to bully other kids and adults on the tour by telling them they would be relegated to the van if they couldnt keep up the pace he set. After we stopped for breakfast and had to wait an hour to be served we were all refreshed and ready to resume only to be told that we would all ride in the van for the rest of the trip- having only completed about 1/3 of the ride. they claimed weather - but the weather had actually improved while we ate adn several tours passed while they loaded all the bikes back in the van. All in all it was an extreemly disappointing way to spend over $600 and a day of our vacation -- having done it before - i can tell you it can be a great experience - don't choose Maui Mountain Crusers.

We came to Maui and planned our trip to include this tour. My wife and I did this tour over 15 years ago and it made a memory that we wanted to share with our kids (13 and 11 yrs old). It was nothing less than awesome. We were fortunate to have a clear morning at the summit. Of course it was cold, but we dressed appropriately. I had a t-shirt, hoodie sweatshirt, and a columbia wind breaker that Maui Mountain Cruisers provided. They also provided gloves that kept my hands warm. I also wore shorts with sweatpants and the rain pants that Maui Mountain Cruisers provided. That was perfect for keeping warm during the sunrise.

The park won't let the commercial companies bike from the top anymore. So, we had to drive down about 10 miles to a staging area where we mounted up. The kids were very comfortable getting on the bikes, staying in the driving lane, and using the brakes. We bike at the beach in Delaware and this wasn't too tough. My daughter (11 yrs old) stayed at the front behind Scott. She is pretty lightweight so it was hard for her to get momentum in some of the flat areas to keep up speed. However, she was able to get up to 35 mph on the downhill! The stops along the way were perfect places for pictures and it was good timing for taking a break. We went all the way down to the beach at Paia and walked out onto the sand!

Highly recommend for a family trip for a memory of a lifetime. Thank you Jay and Scott for an awesome experience! We really felt the sense of Ohana! Take care and we'll look for you next time! Aloha!

1st time to Maui and OMG, would do this excursion again and again!!! Outside of the 2:45am pick up at your hotel, which would highly recommend you book on your 1st day in Maui (helps adjust to time change) that is the only bad thing anyone could say about this unless you work the night shift then being up then is no biggie. They pick up you up at hotel, & provide coffee and granola bars if you like. There were 11 people in our group and tour begins in a van driving to the top of the summit 10,000 ft up (little over an hour drive where you can catch some additional shut eye if you like since it is still dark out). You get up in there in plenty of time to grab a nice spot to take pictures of the most incredible sunrise you will ever see. Afterwards you load back up at 7am and drive about 10 miles back down the summit to a starting point where you begin the most scenic bike ride you could ever take. 28 miles all downhill so 1 never has to peddle. Your group stops along the way for a quaint outdoor breakfast (not included in cost)which hit the spot. You hop back on your bikes and continue your downhill ride thru country and farm lands with some beautiful views of homes, cattle, horses etc. finishing up on a beach at the bottom in town. They return you to your hotel by 12:30 & provide water if you like. If you get Dan and Julio for your tour guides you lucked out...they are both very knowledgeable, funny and a true enjoyment to have for your morning ride. They make the ride fun and have great photo ops for everyone. They are also both so safety conscious that even the most inexperienced riders will feel comfortable and safe. Instructing you on hand signals & staying in constant contact with each other and the riders. The company provides winter gloves and an outer jacket and wind pants to help with the cold but would recommend dressing in layers if you can...T-shirt, sweatshirt, jacket, it is cold 30 degrees or so at the top for your sunrise & it is quite cold until you reach about 1/2 way down the mountain where you begin to shed your layers of clothing which they keep in the van as they follow you down on your ride. From the mid-west so I brought my winter coat and leg warmers for over my jeans & it kept me quite warm on the beginning of the bike ride but you ultimately end up back in a t-shirt 1/2 way down. Will do this bike ride again on my next trip to. Maui. Aloha and enjoy.
