“Good Fun with Hippies”
Reviewed October 26, 2012 via mobile

My partner and I chose to ride Haleakala Volcano rather than go deep sea fishing, and we made the right choice! It was tough getting up and ready for the 2am pick-up on the Sunrise Ride, and to make matters worse the guide absolutely reeked of smoke, stinking up the entire van. However, just because he smelled like an old ashtray doesn't mean that he was a bad guy. Quite the contrary. He was very laid back, some would call him a hippie, but he was truly concerned with everyone's overall experience. Most of the people in our group (12 in all) hit it off really well with the guide, as well as the driver who joined us before heading up to the summit.
We were equipped with warm clothing and a complete rain suit for the sunrise at the summit, and given coffee, juice and a granola bar as well. The clothing was excellent, because it was a balmy 35 degrees at 10,000 feet! Unfortunately, a cloud settled in the crater right before sunrise, completely blocking our view, but it was an experience standing up there amongst some pretty violent winds!
Everyone was fitted with a full-face bike helmet and a 50lb steel frame bike. We had a few older people in our group who weren't very confident on bikes (why they chose this activity then, is beyond me), but they ended up going the fastest and cheering the loudest! There were a few photo ops on the way down, as well as a lunch break at a mediocre restaurant. Regardless of the smoke-y guide, no sunrise, and crappy food we had a blast. From the moment we took off down the volcano we had smiles on our faces that went ear to ear! Our fastest clocked speed on the bikes was 47mph! There 's just something really thrilling about going from 10,000 feet to sea level on a bicycle.

“Great trip, gave exactly what was offered on the website. Excellent staff.”
Reviewed October 12, 2012

Had fun out today on the day time trip with Maui Mountain Cruisers. (Getting up super early to see the sunrise was not that important to me.)

The guides, Russell and Dan, were excellent, and made the trip both informative and enjoyable.

Getting to see a volcano and then riding down to sea level is something one doesn't often get the opportunity to experience, and was, IMHO, thoroughly worthwhile.

At all times I felt safe and well taken care of. The guides knowledge of the area and history was excellent, and their requests and instructions of us were clear and easy to understand.

The bikes were perfect for the job at hand and very comfortable. No one on our tour had any issues at all.

It would be fun to come back with a group of friends so that we could fill a trip and travel a little faster ;-)

That was our guide John's mantra. First off, getting up for a 2am departure was a little tough but after that everything was fantastic. Both John and our driver Russell were very professional and informative on fun facts and historical information. On the way up to Haleakala (in the dark) we saw a fire from the road which was a sugar cane field. We found out this is a rare occurrence as they don't harvest this way much anymore. Once at the top we put on jackets and wind suits that were supplied by our guides. The temperature was probably in the high 40's when we got there and alot of people at the summit 10,000 ft level were complaining about the temperature but being from San Francisco we are used to summertime fog and wind. John explained good viewing places for the sunrise and also told us about the shadow that the mountain makes as the sun comes up. Its amazing how many people were there for the sunrise, the parking lot was packed but 15 minutes later it was almost totally empty. We got back in the van and drove down to the 6500ft level where we were given instructions and helmets for our 28 mile ride down to the ocean. John led the way down single file in the middle of the lane, all traffic behind us is blocked by the van and trailer driven by Russell. The guide and driver are in constant radio contact with each other and as cars back up behind the van we pull over every couple of miles to let the cars go by. As others have stated earlier, you can only go as fast as your slowest rider so if you are a nervous bike rider the other riders in your group of 12 may be unhappy with you. We stopped about halfway down at a deli for breakfast but there werent many breakfast options left as other bike companies stopped before us. We shed our layers as we descended the mountain and by the time we finished our ride at about 10:30 am at the beach we were back in shorts and tank tops. Some riders had jeans on which were good at the beginning but they were complaining by the time we stopped for our breakfast break..bring shorts. thanks Russell and John we had a great time

“Fun experience. But...”

I am not so sure this was the company to choose. The van was old...the bikes were old. Their idea of a continental breakfast is a granola bar. Really? The driver was awesome.
And overall I a, glad I had this experience but would have liked a more upscale tour company

“A 'must do' on Maui”
Reviewed August 13, 2012 via mobile

We had a awesome time with John and Russell from Maui mountain cruisers. Started with an amazing sunrise and then on to the bikes to cruise down the hill. Reading through some of the bad reviews on here, I think some people need to get a grip and understand that of course you are going to be going fast, you are riding down a hill from 6,500ft!! Our guide did ask one of riders to sit in the van as he didn't think he was confident enough on the bikes and was slowing the group right down. He only did it for the safety of the group and the individual involved. The guides were both really informative and never made you feel unsafe. This company is also one of only two that you ride right out to the beach with too.
