“deserves top spot for Maui restaurants while pricey”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

Really good food and cocktails. Feels intimate even though it is a pretty big place. Portion sizes are pretty big, so think about sharing for starters. The house specialty is the crab and lobster filled mahi but I thought the other fish I had which came with papaya and banana chips was much better and special compared to what you could get other places.

Location in itself is beautiful, so try to be there before sun down and take a stroll in their beachfront garden before dinner.

“Great food!”
Reviewed March 7, 2014 via mobile

It was our third year in a row to Maui and Mama's Fish House is at the top of the list. They have a great staff, awesome food, and great atmosphere. Always have our table ready at scheduled reservation. Just got back home yesterday and already planning next trip to Maui and dinner reservations.

“Lunch is a good option”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

Oftentimes, people make dinner "the special meal". No matter whether it's lunch or dinner, Mama's does a fantastic job, however, if you choose lunch you are better able to enjoy the beautil tide pools and watch the wind surfers.

“Very good with an asterisk”
Reviewed March 6, 2014 via mobile

After many years of having the pleasure of visiting Maui we decided to try Mama's albeit some distance from where we usually stay in Napili. We had a reservation for lunch at 11:30 on a Sunday and were promptly seated at a nice table. This is a large restaurant seating over 220 and many tables would not have a beach view. The seating is not crowded and the ambience is very pleasant. Our service was excellent and not rushed. The restaurant was quite full by the time we finished. Dress might be described as "polite casual". There were a surprising number of parties with young children given that I understand the kids menu such as it is runs about $26. On the other hand it can be difficult for vacationers to find child-minders while they go out for dinner. this is a very friendly establishment but I would not describe it as child-friendly as such.

The food was excellent and the wine list is not extensive but entirely adequate for the menu. I had the three seafood curry which seems to come at only one intensity level (mild to moderate). My favourite "wine" with curry is beer of which there was a limited but good selection. I also had the lobster luau soup which was the highlight of the meal from my perspective. My better half had the onaga cheeks appetizer and the tomato and calibrese salad with a glass of reisling all of which was well-received. The portions are meaningful but not excessive and allow room for dessert. We chose the black pearl and the creme brulee. Both were very good but the creme brulee the less so.

The * for Mama's is the price. A young family or anyone on a budget may wish to consider something like the Sea House, Honu or Aloha Mixed Plate. Mama's delivers decent value for what they charge but you are talking about $100 per person and could easily go over this.

“It's as Awesome as Everyone Says”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

Great Food, Great Drinks and Great View and Excellent Service. If you love seafood especially fish this is the place for you. Missed visiting last time we were in Maui so this was the first place I made reservations. It was a far drive (because of traffic and low speed limits) from Lahaina where we were staying but so worth it. We went at 7 PM with reservations and had a short wait in the bar but it was very crowded that night. Next time I will go earlier since it was dark when we got there and didn't get to see the view very well. I had Hawaiian Shrimp Won Ton with Macadamia nut dipping sauce as an appetizer and Mahimahi stuffed with lobster and crab, baked in a macadamia nut crust for my entree - it was as wonderful as it sounds - expensive but worth it! It's no surprise why this place is #1.
