First off, go for lunch!! You just HAVE to see that beach. it's AMAZING!! The service and food were just fantastic. They were very helpful with some family food allergy stuff. It was extremely expensive. Kids meals were $24, but I have to say it was so worth it. The amount of food they got was surprising. Everything was cooked to perfection! Favor, plating, fusion of flavors- it was all just amazing. But you must see it in the day time, that beach really made it just unreal. The whole restaurant opens up to the most breathtaking view. Go, eat cheap the rest of the week, do what you can to make it happen!! It's that good!

Honestly I think this place is just ok. It is located in a very beautiful setting by the beach and service was friendly. The food was fresh but lacked flavor. I had the whole fish which was perfectly timed and not overlook but had absolutely no flavor, not even salt! It came with a small dipping sauce size of a McDonald's dip and if you didn't put any on the fish would have no taste. For $55 a fish I expected more. Drinks overcharged at $18 a cocktail and $10 for a virgin cocktail. My husband had the Mahi Mahi toasted in macadamia nuts. Again for $50 it was just ok and lacked flavor. We've had better but then again we live on the west coast and has easy access to get fresh seafood. They do have fish seafood daily.

My husband and I ate here for lunch while staying in Wailea in May. It's 5-star with an Aloha flair. The food was incredible and something everyone should experience at least once. Yes, it's expensive, but it's worth every cent! The ceviche appetizer was perfect. The lobster and crab stuffed Mahi-Mahi was to die for and the Ahi Tuna was also very good! The MaiTais are spendy but probably the best MaiTai on the island (we had a couple in the bar while we waited for our table and a couple more with lunch ;-). Also, I highly recommend coming for lunch so you can enjoy the beautiful view of the beach. We will definitely eat here again!!

Mama's doesn't look that big from the highway, but it is a factory. According to the waitstaff it has around 300 employees. Nobody seems to know the exact number of tables, but it seems to be well over a hundred. It is really difficult to run a world-class restaurant of that size.

Somehow they carry it off. The night we dined there the kitchen was spewing out seafood as fast as it could to the usual packed house, but we never had a sense that the waitstaff had any other priorities than ourselves. The explanations of what we might order were thorough and unhurried. Furthermore, the waitstaff knew a lot more than what was on the menu (which is noted for listing the name of the fisherman who caught what's being offered.) I ask: "what is this sauteed calamari, I didn't know calamari was taken in Maui?" Response: "No, sir, it was taken overnight at XXX, on the south coast of the Big Island, and it came to us this morning."

How do they do it? One of the busboys said, "this is a well-oiled machine." According to local residents, their secret is that they pay very high prices to local fisherfolk, and buy in large quantities. Hence, everyone competes to sell the best of their catch to Mama's.

The local seafood (and ordering anything else seems criminal) is skillfully prepared, usually with local vegetables, sometimes with an Asian-fusion feel.

About the prices: Maui has more than its share of expensive restaurants. Some of them are pretty good but I haven't found anything to match the best restaurants in big cities--except for the impeccable local seafood at Mama's.

Paying $20 for an appetizer and $45 for a main of this quality seems fair. I have a bigger problem with $15 desserts and $16 cocktails. There is, however, one surprise, a decent wine list without the huge markups often found in restaurants of this caliber. You can pay more for a bottle of wine in many run-of-the-mill Maui restaurants.

We tried this restaurant based on recomendations of friends. We arrived at 2:30 and were seated within 10mins without a reservation.

We ordered two appetizers, a salad and the stuffed mahi mahi for the two of us. This was the perfect amount of food. The mahi mahi was so much better than I expected.

We enjoyed our food and the view but there is no doubt that it's expensive. I would go back but not beforw trying some other places.
