We celebrated Father's Day at Mama's, and it was a treat for all of us. I had made the reservations online about a month prior, and requested a table with a sunset view. When we arrived, we were greeted so warmly, and shown to a table that was perfect for watching a gorgeous Maui sunset. There was no sign whatsoever of the drama earlier in the day of the ash that had forced them to close for a few hours. Kudos to the whole team for getting that cleaned up and reopening so quickly! Our service throughout the meal was impeccable. We even got special attention from one of the managers, who brought me a beautiful lei. We had 3 apps - seared ahi, shrimp wontons and beef Polynesan. They were all so delicious that I'm not sure I could say which one I liked best. Our entrees were Kampachi, Mahi Mahi and the Traditional Hawaiian Feast. Wow! We were all happy with our selections. For dessert, we had a lillikoi creme brûlée and banana Mac nut cobbler thing. The creme brûlée had been on my mind for 4 years, since my last visit, and it was just as good as I remembered. We've eaten here several times, and always loved everything that we have tried. The service has always been great, and everyone there has always been warm and welcoming. No trip to Maui is complete for us without at least one wonderful meal at Mama's!

The second friends hear maui, the first reaction is "you have to go to mama's!" Some people lauded the view, others the food, some the Hawaiian chintz take on fine dining. All of them were right. Mama's lives up to its hype.

Mama's is located just outside of pa'ia, a charming little hippie surf town that deserves more than just the hour long browse we gave it. It's a good drive away from the resort areas (probably a good 35-40 minutes from wailea were we were staying), but don't let that deter you. Let it lead you up to the goodness.

Upon arrival, you valet, check in and are then directed to a second hostess past a beautiful private beach cove, shaded by palms and punctuated by tiki torch light. Give yourself enough time to enjoy the colors and beauty of this spot. And bring your camera.... While you may be turned off by the dozens of couples and families engaging in the ubiquitous photo shoots, rest assured it is ubiquitous because it is worth it. My husband and I peeked later at a few of the shots we got there and laughed at how people would think we did a professional photo shoot in front of a fake background -- it is THAT scenic.

We had a 7pm reservation and were told we could be seated immediately but ifwe preferred a window table, we would have to wait a bit. We opted to wait for a window, enjoyed the scenery a bit more and indulged in frozen cocktails at the bar (a refreshing coconut mint gin concoction for me). About 25 minutes later we were escorted to a perfect table where we got to watch the infamous maui sunset. So worth the wait.

Our server was sweet and pleasant, but so finely trained and knowledgeable about her craft. She really perfected the balance of laid-back Hawaiian-style fine dining. Following some soft warm bread and an amuse bouche soup, We picked a bottle of wine (they have a varied selection with some surprisingly reasonably priced choices) and started by sharing the three types of sashimi and the Tahitian ceviche in a fresh cut open coconut. So enthralled we were with both of these dishes; the fish as fresh as we've tasted anywhere....accented beautifully and delicately. For mains: I had three medallions of local fishes in a spicy creamy Thai curry with a julienne of veggies and perfect sticky white rice soaking up this as-good-as-in-Thailand curry. Husband had ahi wrapped in banana leaves, which he devoured. We spent a couple hours lamenting that even at the greatest seafood spots and markets in NYC, nothing is this fresh and this flavorful. I loved that the menu details the specific fisherman who caught the fish- great touch. We were too full for dessert, but our server brought a delicious coconut candy to sample.

Prior to our meal, we had discussed wanting to return first to Kauai on our next trip back to Hawaii, but after our meal at mama's, we decided that maybe it alone could sway us back to maui.

People warned us about the prices, and while it wasn't an inexpensive meal, it was no more than any nice meal in NYC. Plus, in Hawaii, everything good is expensive. Dinner with drinks and wine was somewhere in the $250 range for the two of us. We can't wait to return to mamas and we are definitely going to become part of the large out of state crew of mamas fish house cheerleaders!

We arranged our day so we could have an early dinner here during sunset. The atmosphere was great. The food was great. The service was average. Overall, it wasn't enough to justify the high prices. Our final total was $240 for two of us: an appetizer, two entrees, a dessert, and their least expensive bottle of wine. If that sounds reasonable, then absolutely make the drive out there. It seemed too pricey for what we got.

We returned to Maui as we have many, many times and that always means lunch or Dinner at Mama's Fish House. Mama's has been serving the freshest seafood for 40 years. The setting on the beach is beautiful, just what you would picture if you were creating a Hawaiian paradise set for a movie. The service is excellent and the fish so fresh they tell you who caught it and when and where. Hard to beat that. All the other dishes are great to but be sure to try one of the fresh fish dishes. While evening is lovely, in the afternoon there are often wind surfers putting on quite a show just off shore.

Okay, so I don't like to play favorites as there are many AMAZING restaurants on the beautiful island of Maui. However, in this case it's essential!! Mama's Fish House is my all time favorite restaurant in all of Maui!! There, I said it!! Yes, there are lots of AMAZING restaurants in Maui but Mama's truly is by far the very best!!

Let's start at the beginning!! The location and property is very cool!! It reminds of the French Polynesia!! You arrive to a very attentive valet staff. Then you get to walk through the breathtaking grounds to the restaurant which is opened up completely so it's almost like you are dinning outside. The service is outstanding!! And then it happens....... your food arrives!!!!!!! That will be the very moment when you realize that Mama's Fish House is the VERY BEST!!!!!!!!!!! The food is SUPER fresh!! It's farm to table and ocean to table and every course is absolutely delicious!! We have been eating there for ages and it's consistently AMAZING!!

When you eat at Mama's Fish House you are not just going to a restaurant.... You are having an AMAZING culinary experience!!!!

HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!

Be sure to make a reservation in advance!! If it's the busy season, you will want to make one at least 1 to 2 weeks in advance.
