You don't want to stay here. You might want to stop by and pet the nice cats and the sweet dog. You might want to look at the beautiful view from the grounds which is even prettier than on their website.

You might enjoy the capacious living room and kitchen in Spyglass house proper.

HOWEVER. The house next door on the same property is not in great shape. We stayed in the "garden room" for just under $200 a night. It was a garage. It really was. Once. And rehabbed, well, it is still a garage. With ants, gecko poop, spiders, mosquitos, very hot, long and narrow, uncomfortable bedding, dusty, ants parading in large and long armies in the shower that looks like it was once an outdoor wash the sand off your feet shower. The upper areas of it are boarded with ply wood. the beams have spider webs.

view was of dirt patch and broken bench.

hot tub was broken.

the kitchen in this unit was also ant infested.

The front units with shared bathrooms were merely small and hot but were actual rooms.

We looked at rooms in the main house - hated to lose one nights stay and were trying to find options - ouldnt possibly spend two nights in the garage room, oops garden room. In the main house down stairs rooms were small, tub no shower, nicer but very tiny and very close to other rooms. upstairs rooms were also very tiny and opened directly into owners living room area, no privacy at all.

all bathrooms lacking, cleanliness hit and miss, not worth the pricel.

I am not a big resort person, prefer b and b's and off the beaten track - but we went over to the maui prince in south maui, paid slightly less, had gorgeous clean room with ocean view.

they were nice enough here to give me one of two remaining nights (had booked three) money back, altho honestly considering the condition of the room we should've been refunded both remaining nights. They were not mean about us leaving, they understood (I doubt we were the first to bail on the garage room) and the cats and dog were really nice.

do not book the garage room, unless of course, you are a car that likes to sleep in a bed.

Oh, and the beaches on this part of the island, other than the pretty little one at Mama's Fish House down the road, are full of slimy algae.

you really do want to stay in west or south maui i think. Paia is a cool little town tho. fun to check out for lunch or on way to Hana.

As frequent traveller around the world (mostly for business), we get very tired of the very nice, but quite standard and predictable hotel chains . During our holiday in Maui island, we wanted to find a place where we would be able to feel the elements and be close to the admirable nature of the island, while still having a nice level of comfort.

We found all this (and more) at the Spyglass house in Paia, Maui. It is REALLY an ocean front place, no surprise! No street, no building in front of you, it's possible to watch the occasional surfer and boats, while sipping a drink, sitting in one of the outside chairs. It is possible to access the shore, and a small beach within 5 minutes walk.

For us, these were the most important features and they were all met: the house sits directly on the shore of the ocean, at an affordable price and with many possibilities to spend nice and quiet time outside, facing the elements (Paia is a favorite for world-class windsurfers and kite surfers). We rented the Crows nest, which is basically a room built around a very comfortable bed (good linens and excellent support from a new mattress), a private rest room and lanai (balcony). The room is very small, with plenty of windows to let the ocean air in and has all needed amenities. We had free access to a very nice living room and kitchen that we shared with the other guests of the house (there are 3 rented rooms overall in this house). This place is as welcoming as your or my house! There are inviting couches, dining tables both inside and outside and most of the essential tools needed for an accomplished cook (if you are a "high maintenance cook", you might be looking for a bit more tools...). The breakfast was OK, but you may prefer to eat your own bread as there is a very exotic grocery store in Paia that sells all kind of foods, including good fresh bread. Overall, our experience has been very nice and serene, and since the owners also live in the same house, you can expect that it is very well maintained.

I can undoubtedly highly recommend this special place, and I will certainly return one day.

My husband and I spent our first 6 days of our 18 day vacation at the Spyglass House. It was a perfect place to unwind from the busy workdays we had just left behind. We were one of three rooms in the house, and shared a bathroom with one other guestroom - but it was not a problem for us at all. The kitchen was joint also, and there was coffee, waffles, and breakfast items available for a self-serve morning at any time we preferred. We would eventually make our way to the porch, which has a lovely scenic view of the ocean, palm trees, the lovely yard (with jacuzzi). Often we'd stay there and read some, or eat breakfast - or we'd make our way to the bench near the cliff where it was a breezier place, but fantastic, too! Visiting with other guests is easy (and was pleasant for us) to do - or not! We would stay there again easy. Reading, relaxing, and visiting nearbly Paia (sp?)....a good place if you are wanting a non-touristy atmosphere, yet cute shops, and great little restaurants. Later in our vacation we went to the more of the tourist places and were able to happily busy ourselves with snorkeling, boogie-boarding, diving, etc.....because we got a REAL beautiful, relaxing, and easy vacation the first several days! :) Thanks for a nice retreat for us :)

Super laid back mellow beautiful place. Rooms are unusual and very comfortable. This is the place to stay if you are looking to be away from all the tourist resort stuff, but close to a cute little town with everything you need-and anything else you should desire is just a short drive away. A little beach right down the street is private and perfect. Rainbows everyday off the bluff on the hotel grounds can be viewed from a choice of chairs on the ocean side, the hot tub or from some of the rooms. There are few enough rooms that we rarely had to share the views with anyone else. Small, friendly, affordable and funky- can't wait to come back!

Spyglass House is located in Paia on the north side of Maui (Road to Hana side). Located so close to the airport (less then 10 miles away) and just on the outskirts of Paia - you can walk to center of Paia Town, you would think that the location of Spyglass House would put you in the center of some urban area. Quite the contrary. Turning off the Road to Hana to the property location you go by a beautiful beach area that always has plenty of wind surfers to watch and be amazed at their incredible skills.
Turning into the parking area for Spyglass you still don't have a clue as to what this property has to offer (you can just see the back side of the two houses (Blue House & Spyglass).
Having spend the 5 previous days on Kauai at the beautiful Sheraton, what I consider a Mega Resort, which by the way I also highly recommend, we where ready for some solitude and a little fending for ourselves.
Walking into Spyglass for the first time gave me the solitude I was looking for. Even though I had just left the highly traveled Road to Hana some 500 yds away, upon my walking into the beautiful property that makes up Spyglass I was quickly transformed from the hustle and bustle of the mega resort to the laid back solititude of my private Maui Beachfront House.
The fending for ourselves portion I was looking for was also readily available, I had to carry my own luggage the 50 feet (not the mile walk you get at the mega hotel) from my car to my room (called the Crows Nest) but help was offered. I then had to make my own cup of tea in my own kitchen. My wife got to make her own coffee (the way she likes it). Then we had the choice of cooking for ourselves or going out to one of the many nearby eateries. More fending for ourselves.
The main house "Spyglass" which I'm guessing is somewhere between 40 to 60 years old has been left in what I'd consider its mainly original condition. Creature comforts have been added (WiFi, cable TV), with remainder of the house in what I'd consider to be what a beachfront house was intended to be. Beautiful views of the ocean from the deck or from inside the house thru it's large patio doors all surronded in natural local woods (floors and walls and ceilings). Rooms in the house are much like you remembered growing up, comfortable and lived in.
Outside you are right on the ocean with a million dollar view. I watched the crusie ships roll by early one morning and also we had a couple of sea turtles that liked to surf the waves breaking on the rocky shoreline each morning. Or off in the distance you could watch the wind surfers.
In closing if your looking for a real "getaway" from the day to day, looking for real solitude (remembering that the complete other Maui experience is only miles away) of a quiet beach front home, and are willing to fend for yourselves (with a friendly helping hand there if you ask for it), then Spyglass is the place to go. I hope to bring my entire family back sometime (kids, grandkids, etc..) to share what Spyglass has to offer.
Two thumbs up!!

The Spyglass was a pleasant retreat in a perfect location for what we were looking for. The town of Paia is full of soul- a definite throwback to the 60s with good restaurants and quaint shops. The central location was key for getting to Hana, Haleakala and even to the south and west coasts and perfect for ease in getting to north shore surf breaks.

Sleeping to the sound of crashing waves and waking up to the surf each day was amazing-- views can not be beat, especially for those who love surf!

The innkeepers were down-to-earth, friendly and available if you needed them, but not in-your-face.

The rooms were clean- only problem in that department was the common garbage in the kitchen got quite full and attracted a roach-- bugs to be expected in the tropics, but the trash could have been tossed.

Plenty of clean towels and beach towels were available.

Many of the issues mentioned in previous reviews seem to have been addressed. The bathrooms were equipped with plenty of soap and shampoo and the stained glass windows were stunning. The furnishings were quite nice as well throughout the house.

There are a lot of lawn chairs so you can enjoy the views over breakfast, can meet fellow guests, or find a private spot to take it all in.

The one drawback to the Spyglass (that is common in any guesthouse/B&B-type accommodation) is the lack of privacy. You are sharing a house with other guests and the rooms are not soundproof. If you want a romantic escape, while this place is quite romantic, it does not lend itself to intimacy, unless you are unabashed about your neighbors!

Overall, just know what you are getting- like others (and the owners) say- this is not a resort, it doesn't pretend to be a resort. It is a really comfortable place where you feel like you live in Maui for the length of your stay.

Definitely recommended for those who want to see and experience Maui for what it is- a beautiful island with a million things and places to explore.

Anyone traveling to Maui should definitely consider staying at the Spyglass House in Paia. There are two unique homes on this beautiful oceanfront property, with 6 comfortable rooms, and totally reasonable rates. I loved sitting in the living room early in the morning, reading my book and listening to the waves crash on the shore. In fact, I loved doing the same thing morning, noon and night.. Plus, the vibe there is so peaceful, welcoming and totally aloha! Poni has a slice of heaven there that she is kind enough to share with us grateful travelers. There is beach access a very short distance from the B n' B, and there are several other beaches near by that are only minutes away. There's also a great yoga studio down the street where my favorite yoga instructor (Nadia) in the whole world teaches. The town of Paia is the best spot on the island. The North Shore is where you want to stay when you go to Maui. It's a lot mellower than the Lahaina side or over by Kehei. The Spyglass House is da kind! Check it out!
