“Absolutely Amazing Paradise.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2008

All I can say is "wow." UNBELIEVABLE PRIVACY AND STUNNING OCEAN VIEWS!!! The place was not a five star hotel. We stayed in the Dolphin House. We were two couples who shared the front half of the house for a very reasonable price.

QUICK STORY - We had a terrible beginning in Maui. We planned to go camping, but we arrived on Maui at night and had no idea what to expect. We went to Olowalu campground first and found it to be extremely sketchy with what appeared to be a homeless person shelter campsite. People gave us the run-around and were very sketchy. We then drove to Lahaina and after several hours of calling hotels and not finding what we wanted, spent the night in the rental car in Long's Drugs parking lot. The next day, we resumed calling hotels after our molokini cruise in search of a place to stay and when they said they had no rooms we would ask for another recommendation and eventually came accross the spyglass house. Here we found something amazing.

We showed up mid-day on our second day in Maui and the owner showed us the property - it was unbelievable. The property is right on the water. There is some good snorkeling if you don't mind swimming out a quarter of a mile - tons of sea turtles out on the reef. The front yard is beautiful and secluded with a hot tub that we used both nights and no one bothered us either time. We had the whole property to ourselves. There was a bench and two lawn chairs out by the cliff by the water that you can sit in in the morning and watch whales and dolphins off in the water. The house is nice. We really enjoyed it - with a nice big kitchen and a nice family room overlooking the front yard/ocean. It worked out good since we had two couples because the place had two bedrooms. The Neptune room is where we stayed and our friends stayed in the Mermaid room. Very nice.

If you are into luxurious 5-star resorts, you may not like the place. It is really nice but it is just a hawaiian house nothing special. It has very nice large ceilings and they provide you with all the amenities - a nice bathroom, a tv, a radio/cd player with ipod connection, a full kitchen w/ fridge, stove, toaster, ect; including breakfast foods (we had eggs, milk, orange juice, eggo waffles, cream cheese, bagels, ect.). The owners are soooo friendly. They will give you surf lessons if you ask or any local advice you can ask for. They are awesome. There is a gas grill and a hot tub and pretty much anything you need and you are free to use them whenever.

It is unbelievably relaxing there - you could spend a whole day and it wouldn't get boring. There is a nice beach just a short walk from the house. It isn't always the best for swimming or snorkeling but it is a nice beach to relax on as there are not many people there ever.

This place is wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone. Your best bet is to go with two couples and rent the front half of the Dolphin House. The Garden Room is on the back of the dolphin house but it is separate. It is worth every penny if you are looking for privacy and relaxation. The sky views from the hot tub at night are stunning, and the oceanfront views are equally impressive. Just 30 minutes from Lahaina and 2 minutes from downtown historic Pa'ia. Only 15 minutes to Kahului Airport. HIGHLY recommended for young and old couples. Be prepared to RELAX!

  • Liked — The amazing property, the hot tub, the house, and the location.
  • Disliked — I can't even think of anything - this place was paradise.

We stayed there for several days in October. Property is beautiful and perfectly located near Paia. Very close to swimming beach and surfing. We loved being right on the water. There's a nice benh for watching the surf while you're sipping your morning coffee. It's right near Mama's Fish House, too.

The room was small, but just right for us. All the other occupants in the house were lovely.

If you enjoy hanging out in Paia and you're looking for someplace unique and laid back, this is for you. if you are used to the big resort scene, you'd probably be happier staying on the south part of the island.

Very friendly owners, too. We will definitely stay there again on our next visit.

Dont leave without experiencing the Greatest massage therapy ever by Rosangela on garden sorrounded by trees, palms, ocean and positive vibrations.

We had a nice 3 day stay at this B&B.
The properties are beautiful, as was the blue room.
It is far from cheap, but compared to the hotel prices on Maui a good bargain. We can recommend it.

The Spyglass property is near Paia, one of the best places to stay in Maui if you don't like condos and big anonymous resorts. The house (actually there are two houses) are just outside the village on the coast facing the ocean in the middle of a quiet and green area. Outside the houses are nice, there's an amazing garden with well maintained lawn that ends on the rocks toward the ocean and there's a wooden bench where you can admire the ocean and the stars at night. There's also a hot tub in the garden but I think it was out of order as the owner didn't give any instructions to use it.

Inside the houses are well furnished with good taste, the style can be defined as shabby-chic. I stayed in the Dolphin house where there are three rooms, two share a common bathroom while the one I had is the garden room with private bath and kitchenette. I read a bad review in the Garden room although I found it big, comfortable and clean upon arrival.

Common area is very nice and full of amenities but as the house has a few rules to respect, the first night other guests had a private party in their room with loud music and leaving a mess in the kitchen the day after.

Owners could be more warm and helpful, I saw them when we arrived and that's it. Besides we asked to leave the room one hour later on check-out day but it was not possible (the house was empty...).

Breakfast mediocre, all frozen stuff and insufficient choice, the good thing is that you can fill the fridge with your stuff and so we did.

If you stay more than one night they don't clean the room so on the third day the floor was full of sand and the bathroom needed a clean.

Even though owners were a bit cold and the house could have been more cleaned up, this is one of the best and most relaxing places in Maui and I had a great time. It is so beautiful that you can pass over some small "bugs", don't miss it!

  • Liked — Location, the house, the room, the charme
  • Disliked — Cleanliness ok but can be improved, owner can be more friendly

You don't want to stay here. You might want to stop by and pet the nice cats and the sweet dog. You might want to look at the beautiful view from the grounds which is even prettier than on their website.

You might enjoy the capacious living room and kitchen in Spyglass house proper.

HOWEVER. The house next door on the same property is not in great shape. We stayed in the "garden room" for just under $200 a night. It was a garage. It really was. Once. And rehabbed, well, it is still a garage. With ants, gecko poop, spiders, mosquitos, very hot, long and narrow, uncomfortable bedding, dusty, ants parading in large and long armies in the shower that looks like it was once an outdoor wash the sand off your feet shower. The upper areas of it are boarded with ply wood. the beams have spider webs.

view was of dirt patch and broken bench.

hot tub was broken.

the kitchen in this unit was also ant infested.

The front units with shared bathrooms were merely small and hot but were actual rooms.

We looked at rooms in the main house - hated to lose one nights stay and were trying to find options - ouldnt possibly spend two nights in the garage room, oops garden room. In the main house down stairs rooms were small, tub no shower, nicer but very tiny and very close to other rooms. upstairs rooms were also very tiny and opened directly into owners living room area, no privacy at all.

all bathrooms lacking, cleanliness hit and miss, not worth the pricel.

I am not a big resort person, prefer b and b's and off the beaten track - but we went over to the maui prince in south maui, paid slightly less, had gorgeous clean room with ocean view.

they were nice enough here to give me one of two remaining nights (had booked three) money back, altho honestly considering the condition of the room we should've been refunded both remaining nights. They were not mean about us leaving, they understood (I doubt we were the first to bail on the garage room) and the cats and dog were really nice.

do not book the garage room, unless of course, you are a car that likes to sleep in a bed.

Oh, and the beaches on this part of the island, other than the pretty little one at Mama's Fish House down the road, are full of slimy algae.

you really do want to stay in west or south maui i think. Paia is a cool little town tho. fun to check out for lunch or on way to Hana.

  • Liked — the view from the grounds which is quite lovely
  • Disliked — everything else - ants, garage, dirt, 'skeeters, price

As frequent traveller around the world (mostly for business), we get very tired of the very nice, but quite standard and predictable hotel chains . During our holiday in Maui island, we wanted to find a place where we would be able to feel the elements and be close to the admirable nature of the island, while still having a nice level of comfort.

We found all this (and more) at the Spyglass house in Paia, Maui. It is REALLY an ocean front place, no surprise! No street, no building in front of you, it's possible to watch the occasional surfer and boats, while sipping a drink, sitting in one of the outside chairs. It is possible to access the shore, and a small beach within 5 minutes walk.

For us, these were the most important features and they were all met: the house sits directly on the shore of the ocean, at an affordable price and with many possibilities to spend nice and quiet time outside, facing the elements (Paia is a favorite for world-class windsurfers and kite surfers). We rented the Crows nest, which is basically a room built around a very comfortable bed (good linens and excellent support from a new mattress), a private rest room and lanai (balcony). The room is very small, with plenty of windows to let the ocean air in and has all needed amenities. We had free access to a very nice living room and kitchen that we shared with the other guests of the house (there are 3 rented rooms overall in this house). This place is as welcoming as your or my house! There are inviting couches, dining tables both inside and outside and most of the essential tools needed for an accomplished cook (if you are a "high maintenance cook", you might be looking for a bit more tools...). The breakfast was OK, but you may prefer to eat your own bread as there is a very exotic grocery store in Paia that sells all kind of foods, including good fresh bread. Overall, our experience has been very nice and serene, and since the owners also live in the same house, you can expect that it is very well maintained.

I can undoubtedly highly recommend this special place, and I will certainly return one day.

  • Liked — Oceanfront location, warm and welcoming place, pleasant inside and outside, excellent price
  • Disliked — the breakfast

The Spyglass Maui Rentals are two, well cared for homes, right next door to each other, in the middle of all of the North Shore beaches and less than a mile from Paia town, in a local, residential neighborhood. The closest beach access is a 5 minute walk away. The houses are owned by a two good friends and long time Maui residents, Liam McCormick and Poni Brendan, who call themselves family. Our on-sight manager, Sabrina, and full time housekeeper, Patti are here to assist you. The rentals are clean, comfortable and will make you feel like you are spending time in a "home away from home" rather than in a resort hotel. The Gingerbread House, at the rear of the property, is a very unique, two story, one bedroom house with a lanai off the second floor bedroom and an outdoor patio on the ground level. It has a jetted tub in the first floor bathroom. The Green Turtle House can be rented as a ONE or TWO bedroom house and can accommodate up to 6 guests when rented as a TWO bedroom. In our older reviews and on Google there is mention of the Bicycle Inn/House and the beachfront "Spyglass House". These are no longer our properties. The Gingerbread House and Green Turtle House have been under new management since the fall of 2014. The most current reviews of our properties can be found on Airbnb and VRBO.
