“Amazing staff. Impeccable finishes. Great Town.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2014

After spending four days exploring beaches and eateries in Kihei—and staying at a small LGBT-friendly resort, that while well managed and staffed, sat on a non-swimable beach that required a car everywhere we went—my husband and I found ourselves looking for a change.

More inclined to low-maintenance, walk-everywhere-you-need-to-go, and be-on-the-beach-in-a-matter-of-minutes getaways, a local turned us on to the town of Paia. After an hour of our arrival (which included a brief walking tour of this small “hippie town” followed by a swim at Baldwin Beach) the decision had been made: “If that hotel on the main drag we passed has a room available, we’re staying!”

Fast-forward twenty minutes...unannounced and without having done any research, my husband and I walked into the lobby of the Paia Inn Hotel and were warmly greeted by member of the staff. After outlining our desired dates—“...immediately, for the next five nights...”—she provided us three options that spanned three pricing tiers. Grateful, excited and looking forward to splurging a bit for our upcoming anniversary, we booked the Luxury Ocean View Suite.

To make a long-story-short, I would highly recommend the Paia Inn Hotel if you’re looking for a mellow, boutique style inn/hotel that offers visitors the option to forget the car and enjoy small town Maui life while surrounded by top-notch customer service professionals . My recommendation is based on the following:

1) Staff: If you want to talk about beautiful individuals inside and out, look no further than the Paia Inn Hotel staff. Attentive, well-spoken, friendly, sincere, prompt and thoughtful are just a few of the words one could use to describe their five-star customer service. All of the staff made the two of us feel right at home.

2) Accommodations: (a) The Luxury Ocean View Suite was truly amazing. Large, clean, cool, this 3/1 offered a huge lanai overlooking lush Hawaiian vegetation and a treetop view of the ocean. From the bathroom finishes-to the furniture-to the bamboo floors—everywhere we looked was an tangible example impeccable taste and attention to detail. (b) The Inn itself, while situated on a very busy street, is super quite (at least the Ocean View Suite was). A small pathway winds through the property leading guests directly to the beach. Prior to entering the beach, there’s a great grassy area where guest can relax in the shade under umbrellas, enjoy a drink while looking out over the ocean or rinse off the sand after a long day at the beach.

3) The town: The Hana Highway runs through the town of Paia. The Paia Inn Hotel is located on this Highway (a two-lane street by mainlander standards). I’m not going to lie, at times, there can be a lot of traffic. That said, I felt the traffic added to the charm of the town (call me crazy!!!). The Paia itself offered us everything we needed for our five day stay—restaurants, grocery store, shopping, public beach—all within walking distance. We only used the car (which was parked in the Inn’s private parking lot) to return to the airport.

While the North Shore of Kauai is more my scene when it comes to vacationing in Hawaii (I only say this to give readers familiar with the Hawaiian Islands added context for my review), I wouldn’t hesitate to return to the Paia Inn Hotel should my travel plans lead me to Maui in the future!

Room Tip: Choose a room facing away from the main street. If you can afford it, the Luxury Ocean View Suite is...

What a wonderful hotel! We stayed in Room 12 (the suite) and loved it.

With 3 bedrooms, a large living room and a full kitchen, it had all we needed to spread out. The air conditioning was also fantastic, as it was quite hot during our summer stay.

The best part was the deck, which spanned the entire rear of the suite and featured direct access from the living room and 2 of the bedrooms. Complete with dining table, padded chairs, day bed and rocking chairs, it seemed worlds away from the main street of Paia, which was only a few steps away.

Great beach access, complete with plenty of beach toys and chairs to use made this a fantastic location to stay.

Add to the mix the warm and friendly customer service by everyone who works there and it’s easy to see why the Paia Inn gets such (deservedly) high marks.

Room Tip: Room 12 is an amazing suite

This was our second annual stay at Paia Inn. Upon our arrival we found a handwritten note saying 'let us know if there is anything you need'. They meant it. We had trouble connecting to their internet and they installed an Apple base station inside our room. We had an issue with a bed and they replaced it. Paia Inn backs up their worlds with their actions. On this trip Paia Inn outperformed the Montage Kapalua. We intend to reward Paia Inn with our repeat business and we recommend it highly.

Paia Inn was a great start to our trip! After our long flight I loved the convenience of quickly getting to Paia. It was no time at all till we were lounging on the private sliver of beach, umbrella drink in hand. Note that we supplied said umbrella drink, there are no attendants or workers on the beach. We had a full kitchen so part of the fun was heading to Mana Foods (walkable, organic, and healthy) and stocking up in the fridge. Our room was laid out more like an apartment than a hotel room- separate sitting area included. There is a cute common grassy area with seating and shade by the beach to bring your food/drinks and to lounge.

This is a quaint boutique property. The pizza place next door is delicious and not to be missed. We originally booked this as a stop over before heading to Hana since we didn't want to drive all that way after our long travel and wanted to start the road to Hana as early as possible, but we didn't want to leave Paia! This small town is worth a stop. I recommend 2 nights. When we drove back from Hana we wistfully looked at Paia Inn. It's just so comfortable. We could easily live here and it's relaxed vibe makes you feel like you do.

Room Tip: There are MANY different room types. No two are the same. We stayed in Junior Suite Rm 9.

My husband and I stayed for 12 nights at The Paia Inn in May 2014. We had booked solely on the trip advisor reviews. We weren't disappointed. The hotel itself is located on the main Hana Highway through Paia...great location, and a stones throw from a lovely quiet beach which was accessed through the hotel garden. Whilst we were there there was building work being completed which the hotel had advised us of. We noticed little disruption and it didn't affect our holiday one bit. The staff were so friendly and couldn't help us enough with information about where to go on the island and good places to eat..... Talking of which Mamas Fish House is to die for, and we loved a new restaurant called Dazoo ... Beautiful food, but simple. Infact one of the young ladies in reception at the Paia in even wrote down her menu choices at mama fish house and we stuck to them. They also have deck chairs and coolers which you can take with you if you do visit other parts of the island....this was very handy. I would definitely visit again. During our time in Maui we stayed for two nights at in Ka'anapali in a large commercial hotel.... I would place the Paia in over any high rise hotel anytime... Very traditional ... You feel like you are a part of the town itself instead of in a big resort where although treated well you are perhaps one of how many hundred people !

Room Tip: Thee are only 7 rooms ... All good.

We greatly enjoyed the vibe of the Paia Inn. We've never been a huge fan of big corporate chain hotels and this was exactly the environment we were hoping for. Centrally located in Paia, easy walking distance to great restaurants and shops, and right on a gorgeous beach. They were doing renovations while we stayed but we never heard any noise and didn't feel bothered by the work. Loved the little kitchen in our room too.

The town of Paia itself is very quaint and different. Not resort oriented in the least. Therefore this quaint boutique hotel fit perfectly. The renovations that were taking place while we were there were barely noticeable. Room 9 was like a small studio apartment. Everything needed except for a dishwasher and stove. I wasn't there to cook, so it was perfect. We still had a full fridge to keep food for our day trip and a microwave to warm up food and warm the water for our morning oatmeal. There is a small continental snack bar breakfast at reception. We enjoyed the oatmeal packs that we topped off with fruit that we purchased at the grocery store. The only grocery store in town had all that we needed. The front desk personnel were always helpful and cheerful. We were there only 5 days. We went to Lahaina after that, but returned to the town at end of our trip and felt a part of this town already. We did make some use of the beach. We sat and enjoyed the ocean with breakfast or with before dinner drinks. You access the beach through a walkway along the building that leads to the beach. I would think that there might even be some of the second story rooms that might have a view of the ocean. We enjoyed it and if you are not a full fledged resort person, you will too.

Room Tip: Sorry, there was no fitness center. Our unit had not much light, but we were able to sleep better d...

The postcard perfection of Maui’s North Shore (white sand beaches, raging waterfalls, stylish cafes, and world-class surfers) just got even better with the opening of the Paia Inn.
