“This is a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

We spent 4 nights in November at the Paia Inn with our kids (9 and 12). My husband is an avid windsurfer and so I found Paia Inn on the Vela Website and was intirgued by its great reviews. My only hesitation was that it didn't have a pool and so I booked a resort for the last nights of our trip to Maui. What a mistake! We had fallen in love with the Paia Inn and our transition to resort living was difficult. We wanted Room 11, a two room suite with a kitchen, screened patio and private outdoor space. This suite was unavailable the first night of our stay so we got to experience the main part of the hotel. Beautiful, clean and comfortable rooms that all opened onto a common living space that had two computers, books and chairs. One of our rooms had a sitting room with a microwave, coffepot, fridge and dishes. We moved into the 2 room suite the next night (actually we just left our suitcases and the staff kindly moved our things). The suite was wonderful! It was private and quiet, clean and comfortable. There was a tree in our private yard that our 9 year our spent lots of time sitting in. My husband and I enjoyed the lounge chairs in our little yard and the Inn's resident cat was very welcoming! The kids loved petting the cat and checked in with her daily. There is a little path to the beach (2 minute walk) and a private yard with chairs and tables. The Inn has beach towels, chairs, toys and boogie boards for your use ( no sign out, just right there for you to grab as you head out to the beach). The beach is local and absolutely beautiful. My husband and I loved that at sunset the local surfers came out to surf in contrast to sunset in the resort area where everyone heads to dinner at dusk. We loved walking to dinner and dessert right out the door of the Inn. Don't miss the Flatbread Pizza a couple doors down and the Gelato shop. The staff was wonderful and helpful without being intrusive and the breakfast at the Inn is AMAZING! The pancakes and the veggie omelet are great. We are looking forward to our next stay at Paia Inn. This is not a resort and if that's what you like you may be disappointed but for those of you searching for that perfect gem of home away from home (It really reminded me on the Inn on 23rd Street in NYC), the Paia Inn is a true treasure with its own magic.

Upon arrival in the cute hippie town of Paia we actually saw Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson within the first 10 minutes... funny enough, Owen Wilson was also checking into the Paia Inn at the same time we were! The property is "unique" (a grouping of several houses they have converted to a "modern" luxury hotel) and they have definitely invested large amounts of money into converting this funky hotel into a "posh/hip" place to camp out on the North shore of Maui, but c'mon... $250+ a night for the SMALLEST (*I'm talking a maybe 10x10 room with the sink next to the bed and literally no toilet paper holder in the itsy-bitsy bathroom or even some floor space to leave your suitcase) room in the place with a view of the Chevron station (literally the hotel is IN the Chevron station parking lot) and THEN another $15 to park your car in a tiny lot that is still a walk around the block?! Even the beach is marginal (which you can walk to by sneaking by several other rental houses)... maybe if they even had a small pool or a hottub out by the beach access it might make for a fun stay; but, I'm sorry, for the value and the location of this property (despite the new/renovated interior) I would never recommend for anyone to stay here... unless you are hoping to meet Woody or Owen who happen to frequent the lobby of this place to hang out with the owner?

Room Tip: If you absolutely have to stay in Paia splurge for the bigger rooms, but if possible... keep driving...

For a glimpse of relaxed, authentic Maui -- Paia Inn Hotel in the charming town of Paia.

We've been dreaming of staying at the Paia Inn for about three years and we finally did it!! We could not have been more delighted with our accommodation, the location, the staff, the service, the ambiance, and the convenience of Paia. We began each day by a visit with coffee to the almost private beach and ended a few of our days there (four night stay) with sunset on the almost private beach listening to the mina birds and the ocean.

Everything was ideal. Helpful, professional, warm caring staff -- each shift/each person delightful. Delicious breakfasts too! Kona was terrific -- the most sincere, warm, lovely smile and so helpful. We loved our room. Loved being able to walk out the door and have no shortage of restaurants, shops, people watching experiences, walks, and beach time. Very easy vacation and we will definitely go back!

If you want a "five star" property without the craziness and Type A people of a big resort on Maui AND you want authentic Hawaii with relaxation and aloha spirit -- try the Paia Inn.

Room Tip: We stayed in a Junior Suite. I think any of the rooms would be nice. We had a private lanai and a...

This place is so great that I don't want anybody to know about it. Lovely staff (all of them!), great breakfast, fantastic clean & nicely decorated rooms (we had a large garden suite so there was no road noise). Unbelievable beach. Close to Hana and Haleakala. Good restaurants nearby and Paia is a relaxed cool little town. Only negatives were the high cost of the room, the pricey parking and the limited closet space for ones clothes but saying all that I'd go back there tomorrow!

Room Tip: Spend a bit more than planned and ask for a garden room, it is really quiet.

Positives
1. Wonderful staff.
2. Nice decor although some not practical,I.e. toilets are for very short people.
3. Best coffee we had on our trip.
Negatives
1. Road noise.
2. No remote with big screen TV.
3. Pricey

Bottom line. Nice place to stay if you can afford it and not a light sleeper like me. Garden facing room might alleviate noise problem.

What a great time we had there. It is a lovely small hotel and the staff couldn't do enough to make you more comfortable. Shout out to Erin who was just so friendly and helpful- thank you so much. The room was small but so comfortable and clean. Great shower and soap products that are made locally. Nice to have a fridge in the room (we removed their mini bar items and used it for some of our own stuff). We went to Hanna and Halakalea to see the Sunset on the 2 days we were in Maui and it was the perfect location for both of those trips. Plus the town is so cute and friendly. Not too touristy feeling. Great restaurants within walking distance.. We even got to sit on their beach behind the hotel on the morning we were leaving and they have thought of everything- you can borrow beach chairs, towels, etc. so you don't have to have anything packed with you. They even have a collection of suntan lotion and bug spray that people left so we didn't have to buy our own.

Room Tip: We got a regular room on the 2nd floor and although it was small, it was wonderful. quiet, no proble...

I can't say enough about this place. We stayed in the 3 Bedroom beach house. Perfect place for 3 couples or a family. The bedrooms are spacious and all furnished with AC, flatscreens, and really comfortable beds. Living Area is huge, kitchen is furnished for gourmet cooking, and the patio area with the giant flat screen TV, BBQ and Hot Tub is off the chain and where we spent most of our time.

The lawn outside has a gate that opens up to Paia Beach, and it's a gem. Most people go to Lahaina but people in the know go to Paia. The town has great restaurants and shopping and that's where most people stay as evidenced the the pristine and almost depopulated beach. We'd walk out there in the morning and be the only people there. We're surfers and kiters and the waves in Paia Bay were pretty sweet at least 1/2 of the week we were there. In the afternoon we'd go to Kitebeach, which is only 20mins away.

The Paia Inn has excellent staff. They are sharp, on it, and genuinely care about your experience. They are also all really cool and appreat to really dig working there; I never got the feeling they were forcing themselves to be hospitable - they are just really nice people. The cooks serve the best breakfast we found in all the town (by far), and the owner was on site several times checking in with guests and saying hi.

Basically I am really bummed we had to leave and jealous of you if you are going, but it's an amazing place and you are going to have a great time.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The postcard perfection of Maui’s North Shore (white sand beaches, raging waterfalls, stylish cafes, and world-class surfers) just got even better with the opening of the Paia Inn. This beach town boutique hotel seamlessly blends modern amenities with the historic character of its building. In a nod to the town’s plantation trade days, the building’s exterior has retained its charm with tin rooftops and rustic hues; yet, the interior mixes contemporary island furnishings with the chic lushness of the W Hotel. ... more   less
