If your somewhat adventurous this is a must do. You have to wake up pretty early in the morning, but its worth it! Up the mountain in a van with the bikes on top and a very informative driver just in time to see the sun rise on Haleakala. No words can explain this. A great ride down the mountain and banana pancakes with cocoanut syrup at a restaurant on the way. What a great day.

Did the sunrise tour in late August. It was pretty cold up at the top of Haleakala Volcano. The wind was particularly killer, but it was definitely a beautiful sunrise. Our guide, Remy, was quite entertaining during the van rides, too. Being able to go at our own speed down the mountain was great. Plenty of opportunities to stop and check out the scenery and stop for breakfast at a sweet little place in town.

Good price, good service, good equipment, but most of all, self-paced is the way to go. Don't believe that self-paced is less safe because a guide is not with you...the opposite is true. On our ride down, we saw the "guided" tours speeding past us at an unsafe safe speed and packed too closely together. If one person lost control, there would have been a bad pile up. We had kids with us and they were fine but would have felt really uncomfortable if we had to keep up with a pack of other cyclists and a guide simply rushing to get to the bottom. We spent a relaxing time riding down, stopped for lunch along the way and had a great day. BTW, we did express tour b/c didn't think kids wanted to get up at 2AM.

Signed up for the Express tour, which does not include the tour in the national park to see the summit. We had gone up the day before, so didn't need to go back up again.

I am a small woman, so usually have issues with gear being sized for the avg 6' man. There was only 2 of us that the standard bikes loaded on the van wouldn't work for. Before we did the briefing they had both of us try a different size bike. They didn't have everyone do this before we left, but had more than enough bikes loaded on the van to be able to switch out for issues when people checked them out at the drop-off point. I thought that was efficient as most people can use standard size bikes, but they did check with those of us who might not fit those to make sure they had the correct size with them.

The bikes were taken care of and had good brakes, which for this trip is about all that you care about. There really was no pedaling unless you stopped at the lavendar garden.

Like other reviewers we had a pretty long wait from when we were told to arrive to when we had the briefing and left the office.

We choose Maui Sunriders for our sunrise at Haleakala and bike trip down. We arrived at 3:00AM and were quickly signed in .They provided an informational talk about the gear and safety prior to heading out on the 90 minute drive up to the top. Along the way they pointed out areas of interest and clearly detailed the three turns you need to make coming down the 26 mile ride. The turns are easy and shouldn't concern anyone worried about getting lost. We watched a beautiful sunrise. The view with the clouds below you and the sun coming up is well worth seeing. It is cold up there so bring some warm clothes. Maui Sunriders did provide gloves and rain gear but fortunately we did not need the rain gear. The trip down is basically all coasting and breaking. There are a few spots you can pull off and enjoy an overlook. A few shops and eating places are also available. We stopped a few times and it took us about 2 1/2 hours to get back to the bike shop.
Here are a few items you may find helpful
The bikes are in good condition and very safe. The brakes are strong and you will use them coming down.
Traffic is not really a problem. The cars do go around you but we never felt that any unsafe situation was around us.
The town of Makawao is towards the end of the ride and a great place to stop. Do not miss the bakery run by a third generation. The donut on a stick is awesome.
Once you get back in Paia take a walk and find a breakfast place. the town is very interesting and enjoyable.
