I was very impressed with our bike trip from Maui Sunriders. My wife, 14-y.o. son, and I did the mid-morning van trip to the 6500' point where all of the outfitters start (we didn't go to the top because we'd seen the Big Island's volcano last year). Our bikes were excellent (2012 Trek bikes), with disk brakes and shocks. We saw the bikes that 2 other outfitters had, and they were rusty chrome-fendered things that I wouldn't trust. They also gave us parkas, rain pants, route maps and emergency numbers, a bike lock, and backpacks to carry them in, with room for water too (not provided).

The safety talk was in-person and very thorough. As far as our experience, the only time had any concerns was near the beginning when we were literally riding through the clouds and visibility was poor. But there was little traffic, we took our time and all was fine. After15-20 minutes we broke back into clear air. I would have been much more concerned with a big group of people with varying riding skills. Most accidents happen because someone in the group has little biking experience and is going too fast for their own comfort in order to keep up.

Also, the route that Maui Sunriders puts you on gets you off of the main highway. there's only 3 turns and it's easy to remember where they are. The route takes you about 26 miles all the way to the coast, not the 16 miles of some other guided trips.

The van trip up had a great history tour by Paulo, the husband of the couple that owns the business. We never heard any talk of tips like those on other trips have complained about.

It was great being able to go at our own pace. We took about 5 hours, far longer than any of the guide-led trips. That included 2 hours of lunch and a lot of walking around in Makawao, which is a cute town. Another outfitter came through and told their group, "We'll have a about 20 minutes here. You can walk around or if you can't wait for lunch, you can get some quick food at the Mexican place."

I wouldn't use anyone else!

My teen daughter and I did the sunrise / biking and we loved it! Worth getting up at 2 a.m. (to be to the shop by 3). I was a little hesistant about driving in unfamiliar territory to get there in the middle of the night but it was easy and all went well. 10 other crazies like us were already there. Our guide had only been employed there about 2 months but he was great. Shared some Hawaii info with us along the ride but also let us veg a little. Bikes were in good shape, as well as gear provided - no problems. The guide checked in with us in a few spots along the ride to make sure we were good (all were). He had been careful to get us into the van ahead of the guided tour groups to get us the best ride possible. So glad we did this independent ride. We were the only two on the rode in many stretches (we all spaced out after the first 5 miles or so). We didn't have many cars that went by but those that did had very courteous drivers. Such a wonderful part of our trip - highly recommend. Oh, the bakery in the town is worth the stop. We even drove back to it another day - so sad but true. ha!

My husband and I are in maui for the first time celebrating our 10th anniversary. We heard about the Haleakala volcano sunrise bike trip through friends, and we knew we wanted to do it while in Maui. We researched a bunch of the options (there are oodles) and settled on Maui Sunriders for 3 reasons: (1) it is one of only 2 "self-guided" bike tours (ie, you don't have to stick with a big group of strangers like a herd of cattle for the entire excursion); (2) the price (it was $15 cheaper per person than the next cheapest option-more on that below); and probably most importantly, (3) it is not associated with a timeshare. We quickly discovered in our research that nearly all of the excursions and activities offered on this island are associated with those annoying, time-sucking, high-pressure timeshare sales pitches. They "get" you by advertising (quite falsely, I might add) super deep discounts on all sorts of activities by calling a certain number or visiting one of many places on the island to book your trip. Turns out, the phone number (there are many different numbers) leads you to a timeshare sales jerk and the desinated locations are all timeshare pushers. Boss frog's is a huge timeshare pusher. ridiculously high pressure. Avoid that place!! Anyway, they advertise these apparently low prices on all sorts of activities, but then when you try to book the activity, you are informed that the discount price only applies if you agree to endure a 2 hour timeshare sales pitch. If you decline the timeshare pitch, not only are you treated quite rudely and pressured in a down-right offensive way, but you have to pay about 50% more for the activity. Such BS!! So, back to Maui Sunriders. They are not affiliated with one of these timeshare deals, and the advertised price is the actual price. No strings. And the Maui Sunriders price is LESS than the "discount" price that you get on other sunrise bike adventures if, and only if, you agree to listen to the timeshare pitch. The adventure itself is incredible. You meet them at their office in Paia around 3am and they provide you with a bike,
helmet, gloves, wind/rain suit, backpack, map, and lots of great tips for things to stop and see along the way. Then, they take you (and all of the stuff mentioned above) in a van to the top of Haleakala volcano (10,000 feet above sea level) to watch the sunrise. Along the way, the tour guide tells you all sorts of neat history about the island, makes recommendations for places to eat and shop, and what to expect on the ride down. They give you very clear instructions on how to get back to the bike shop(which is super easy) and make sure you understand the rules of the road. At the top, they let you out to watch the sunrise. To say the view is spectacular would be a gross understatement. After the sunrise, they take you back down to 6,500 feet above sea level (which all of the bike tours are required to do as well), give you your bike and set you free. You can stop and take pictures, eat, shop and do whatever you want along the way down - on your own schedule - as long as you return the bike to the shop at the bottom of the volcano by 4:30 pm. We took our time, had a fabulous breakfast at the Kula Lodge (recommended by our tour guide), shopped and toured around Macowau (little town on the ride down) and were back at the bike shop by 10:30.
The entire experience was phenomenal. Highly, highly recommend this experience and Maui Sunriders. If you go, ask for mike. He was our tour guide. Awesome, hilarious and very knowledgeable.

I am 90 yrs old and took my fourth bike ride down Haleakala on Wed July 18th, 2012.. Three of us went midday and there was little traffic, great views and an exhilarating experience. It's safe for anyone who can ride. Use caution in a few spots where the road is a little rough/ I flew an open cockpit biplane for 20 years doing aerobatics and this is close to that. Maui Sunriders were well organized and modest rate. You need to do it. Maynard. Sacramento.
